An Excellent Saturday Doubleheader

Sunday==>The Tri-State area is in the process of cleaning up after the blizzard known as Nemo. In Manhattan the roads are mostly clear but the sidewalks are still icy and slippery and potentially dangerous.

The most yucky aspect is the slushy mess at most of the crosswalks and intersections and this will remain for awhile since the temperatures will be at or below freezing until around midday tomorrow.

At 7:30am this morning it was a bitter 18ยบ and with the wind chill it was down in the single digits. Burrrrrrrr!!

Despite the frigid weather Billi Pod is happy to report to all of his loyal and faithful readers and followers that both of his entertainment events went on as scheduled. So ... let’s get right to his report cards on yesterday’s doubleheader ... first ...

FROM WHITE PLAINS, the play about antigay bullying that follows four adult men as they attempt to come to terms with their behavior(s) back in high school==>B

The very unpleasant story line is basically 70 minutes of accountability vs. forgiveness. All four of the characters are majorly flawed and basically unlikeable.

The acting is, however, very good but, honestly, the yelling and screaming gets old pretty fast. The running time is 70 minutes, without intermission, but, frankly, it seemed longer.

Having said this ... it is worth seeing.

Before the show I ran into my theater-friend Kim, who lives in that foreign territory known as New Jersey, which I understand is somewhere West of Manhattan. We did some much needed catching-up and that was nice ...

And ... Kim, per your request==>message delivered. You are welcome.

When the show was over I had time to come back to the warm and cozy confines of PHC for the usual fruit and cheese plate.

Then I dressed very very warmly and headed out to the Laura Pels Theatre at 46th and 6th Avenue to meet up with my theater-buddies Dian Crystal aka My Lady and Marty Kosarik aka Numnutz for our evening’s entertainment event.

I have to share that the walk to the theatre was about a mile and it was really unpleasant. I took my time and was on the lookout for ice, especially the ever dangerous black ice.

Our show was ... TALLEY’S FOLLY, the bittersweet romantic comedy about a Jewish immigrant who returns to a midwestern town in 1944 with the hopes of rekindling his “romance” with the nurse Sally Talley, a Protestant==>B+

This is a two person show and Danny Burstein and Sarah Paulson give stellar performances as the two flawed and highly vulnerable characters, who seem to be totally unsuited for anyone, much less for each other. The plot has serious believability issues, IMHO.

The set, a rundown boat house, is amazing.

This Lanford Wilson play won the 1979 Pulitzer prize.

Billi Pod says==>see this show.

When the show was over we split and I  walked carefully back to PHC and it was even more unpleasant due to the increased wind. Oh well ... it is, after all, Winter in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

I had planned to watch Saturday Night Live because it was being hosted by Justin Bieber and Billi Pod is ... now take a deep breath everyone ...a Blieber ... yes ... that’s correct ... a true Blieber ... so just live with it, OK ...

Anyway ...  at 11:30pm I settled in before the tube and the show began. The opening monologue, featuring surprise guest Whoopi Goldberg, was very good ... oh yes ... thought I ... this is gonna be fun ... then ... gasp ... at around 1:30am a sharp pain in my neck woke me up. OMFG!! I had fallen asleep on the couch and missed 90% of the show. WTF??? How could this happen to a true Blieber? How???

Not a very pleasant way to end what was otherwise an excellent doubleheader ... oh well ...

Moving on ... today's entertainment event is ...
3:00==>THE MNEMONIST OF DUTCHESS COUNTY - “A campus security guard who's determination to woo a lovely local bar owner is only hampered by one thing: his unlimited memory which makes him spout out pretty much every unromantic thing he's ever heard in his life. A bittersweet comedy about learning how to forget.” (Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket)

According to Wikipedia==>”The title mnemonist (derived from the term mnemonic) refers to an individual with the ability to remember and recall unusually long lists of data, such as unfamiliar names, lists of numbers, entries in books, etc.”

This show is playing at one of the Theatre Row venues on my block and I am rather certain it will be in the “loved-it” or “hated-it” category.

When the show is over I plan to do a much needed/wanted walk and wander session in The Port Authority Bus Terminal, Grand Central Station and, probably, Penn Station.

Now for today’s sports-fix for my friend Marty ...

Spring Training begins, thankfully, this week for my Yankees as pitchers and catchers report on Tuesday.

The following headlines in today’s papers are kinda interesting ...

“OLD FOLKS HOME. Aging Yanks head into spring with MLB’s most ancient lineup.” - back page of the Daily News

"LIFE’S A BEACH!! With A-Rod up to his ears in scandal, Yanks & Mets head south.” - back page of the New York Post

Yes, my loyal and faithful readers and followers, some of you may say that the Yankees are very “experienced” while others may say they are “geriatric.” What this means is ... with a roster that includes Ichiro Suzuki (39), Derek Jeter (38) and Kevin Youkilis (34), the average age of the Bronx Bomber’s projected starting lineup is the oldest in the majors - by two years ...

Yankees - 32.9 years
Phillies - 30.9
Rangers - 30.6
Cardinals - 30.5
Dodgers - 30.4

The youngest is the Royals at 26.0 years.

Well ... Billi Pod chooses to say that his Bronx Bombers are a team of experienced and physically fit veterans who are eager to return to The World Series.

And ... on this happy note ... will post this for your Sunday leisure reading ...

Yesterday’s Pedometer mileage==>3.65 miles (or, 7,976 steps)

Total mileage since 7/1/12==>1,125.24 miles

GO GATORS AND GO YANKEES!!
