Yes, An Important Day & Billi Pod’s Report Cards On Yesterday’s Doubleheader.

As I posted early this morning ... today is special because it marks my 22nd AA birthday and I want to thank everyone who has already taken the time to email and text me. Yes, it is difficult for even me to believe that so much time has passed because, as I reflect, so much feels as if it just happened ... like it was just yesterday.

Special thanks, again, to DannyK, who was my original AA sponsor.

Tomorrow I will attend a “Beginner’s Meeting” at 12:30pm in the basement area of St. Peter’s Church in the CitiCorp building in Midtown East. For years, whenever possible, I have tried to “celebrate” my AA birthday at a Beginner’s Meeting, so that I will never forget how difficult and demanding those early days in recovery were/are.

I anticipate meeting up with several of my AA buds (and you know who you are) for the meeting and then coffee, as usual, afterwards.

It is a dark and dreary morning here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World==>46ยบ @ 7:30am.

As I write this posting it is 10:30am and it has cleared up a bit. The New York Half-Marathon has just completed the part of the race that headed West on 42nd Street. An estimated 15,000 runners just passed directly underneath PHC.

Moving on to ... Billi Pod’s report cards on yesterday’s entertainment doubleheader ... unfortunately ... it was a split-decision.

First ... HAND TO GOD, about a boy whose hand puppet becomes possessed by the Devil==>A<==every bit as funny and profane as I experienced the first time I saw it in December 2011.

Yep ... Billi Pod was definitely in the mood for this type of show and it filled the bill (no pun intended - actually, not sure if that is a pun ... whatever ...).

The afternoon weather was awesome, making the roundtrip walk from 42nd Street up to 52nd Street and then over to 11th Avenue, and back, very very pleasant and enjoyable.

When I got back to PHC I had time for my usual fruit and cheese plate and then it was time for my second entertainment event ...

THE YEATS GAME: A Farce of Improbable Darkness, a supposed “farce” about middle-age choices and their ridiculous consequences==>TRUF<==totally ridiculously unfunny!!

I had an uneasy gut feeling about this show going in and in this instance the gut feeling was correct. I didn’t hate the show, just found it to be boring, poorly written and sloppily acted and ... as I said ... unfunny.

Thankfully the running time was only 75 minutes, without intermission.

On my way back to PHC, only two short North/South blocks, I encountered hordes of drunk 20/30-somethings staggering around, yelling and screaming.

Oh, yes ... Saint Patrick’s Day makes us all proud to be living in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

Anyway ... tonight’s entertainment event is ...

7:30==>THE SHOW GOES ON: Musicals in Mufti - “A portfolio of theatre songs from Tom Jones and longtime collaborator Harvey Schmidt, featuring music from such timeless classics as The Fantasticks, 110 in the Shade, I Do! I Do!, Celebration, and many more. In a rare treat, Tom Jones himself is in the production.” (Off Broadway - subscription series).

Yeah, I am really looking forward to this.

As I write this my afternoon is open. Not sure what, if anything, Billi Pod will do entertainment-wise ... perhaps catch a movie ... like ... the just released 21 Jump Street, starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. We will see ...

I will close this posting with the fourth of the seven “Musings from “THE MIND OF BILLI POD (a memoir in progress)” that were accepted by Philosoraptor, The Pontificating Velociraptor of Our Time ...

And you know it’s true, don’t you ...

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

March 18, 2012 - 22 YEARS OF SOBRIETY!!

Hi. My name is Bill and I am an alcoholic.

Today is a very important day for me because it is the anniversary of my 22nd year of sobriety. Yes, it is a mind-boggling 22 years without a drop of alcohol entering my body. As I reflect on the events of the past 22 years it is apparent to me that much has changed in me, hopefully, almost all of it for the better.

I believe the most important change has been my ability to live my life by one of the fundamental teachings of Alcoholics Anonymous, that is, "One Day At A Time."

This concept was totally foreign to me prior to March 18, 1990. Now, on reflection, it was the major thing that saved me during that first tumultuous and frightening year when it seemed that my world was crashing down around me. People who I thought were my friends were calling for my resignation, my young grandsons were being approached by aggressive reporters and my home in Bartow was being picketed by the Ku Klux Klan.

I think I survived, especially during that first terrible year, because I came to believe that my Higher Power, whom I choose to call God, would not deal me more than I could handle on any one day.

I also began to make my way through the AA program by attending meetings and by working the suggested 12 Steps Of Recovery, which are:

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all of our affairs.

As I have written before, at my retirement party in Bartow, FL, in January 1995, I made reference to the role of Alcoholics Anonymous in my recovery by reading the following from the book called "Twenty-Four Hours A Day" ...

*********************

YESTERDAY, TOMORROW, AND TODAY

“There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept from fear and apprehension. One of these days is yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed. We cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone beyond recall."

"The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow, with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise, and perhaps its poor performance. Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is as yet unborn."

"This leaves only one day - today. Any one can fight the battles of just one day. It is only when you and I add the burden of those two awful eternity's, yesterday and tomorrow, that we break down. It is not the experience of today that drives us mad. It is the remorse or bitterness for something which happened yesterday or the dread of what tomorrow may bring. Let us therefore do our best to live but one day at a time.” Twenty-Four Hours a Day, July 29, 30, and 31

********************

Yes, this is how I have attempted to live my life for the past 8,030 days.

I deeply regret that 7 dear friends: David Patterson; Ray Coker; Marvin Mounts; Tom Macdonald; Randy Bentley; Gilbert Goshorn; and, Jack Davis, who were each with me at the beginning of my first steps toward recovery, are no longer able to share with me the wonderment of these 8,030 days lived One Day At A Time. I miss you guys, I really do.

I also must add that none of this time in recovery would have been possible without the dedicated staff at Hanley/Hazelden Center in West Palm Beach, FL, and the continued support of my family, Ginger Flowers of Atlanta, GA, Danny Keith and so many of you loyal and faithful readers. Thank you so very much.

To my NYC AA buddies, and you know who you are, thank you for allowing me to stand beside you during these difficult and trying times. Together we will continue to survive, in sobriety. Seeya at the 12:30pm Beginners Meeting on Monday, as usual.

In closing - not to preach - but aren’t The 12 Steps and One Day At A Time, in and of themselves, pretty good guidelines for living a meaningful and manageable life?

I report - you decide.

Bill

PS: My loyal and faithful readers, please feel free to pass this on to anyone of your choosing.

Billi Pod Says==>HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY!!

Yes==>HAPPY SAINT PATRICK’S DAY to all of my loyal and faithful readers out there in the wilderness, hinterlands and boondocks.

In The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, St. Paddy’s Day is an excuse to binge-drink, act like an asshole, puke, and then pass out.

The annual parade starts at 11:00am @ 44th Street and travels, or maybe staggers is the operative word, North up 5th Avenue to 86th Street, ending around 5:00pm. The weather is supposed to be excellent, clear and in the upper 60s.

The last time the parade was on a Saturday was 2002 and at that time there was a record crowd of 3 million spectators and 300,000 marchers.

Will Billi Pod be there you are no doubt breathlessly asking? No way. Been there, done that.

Now, moving on to other more important things ... like ... Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s entertainment event ...

ETERNAL EQUINOX, about a dashing mountaineer’s surprise visit to the summer home of two of Britain's most important artists, Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell==>C-<==over-acted with totally unlikeable privileged English characters.

Should have left at intermission but I didn’t. Act 2 is, however, somewhat better than Act 1.

Question==>why are most English gays portrayed as flamboyant limp-wristed fops? Jus askin’ ...

Anyway ... today is yet another entertainment doubleheader for Billi Pod ...

2:00==>HAND TO GOD - “A trash-talking hand puppet takes charge of its shy teenage handler at a Christian Puppet Ministry. Has the devil been let in?” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

I saw this show during its first run in December 2011 and totally loved it and gave it an A back then.

Without a doubt this is just the kind of show that Billi Pod is in the mood for today.

Then, for tonight is, hopefully, more comedy ...

8:00==>THE YEATS GAME: A Farce of Improbable Darkness - “A farce about middle-age choices and their ridiculous consequences as old friends explore love, lust, marriage and mischief in a booze, Viagra, dice-driven romp about middle-age choices and their ridiculous consequences.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

Yeah ... I know. Make no mistake about it ... this will, without a doubt, fall into the “love-it or hate-it” category.

I decided to take a chance on it because it is playing at a theatre close to my apartment building meaning, hopefully, I won’t be too exposed to the still standing St. Paddy’s Day booze-hounds.

BREAKING NEWS==>On Friday the Yankees re-signed Andy Pettitte, who retired in February 2011, to a one-year minor-league contract worth $2.5 million.

Andy just attended spring training as a special instructor and apparently got the “itch” to return.

Andy left the game after 16 seasons with a record of 240-138 and 3.88 ERA. He is the MLB record holder for post season wins with a 19-10 record.

As might be expected this was a major sports item in the local papers ...

"I’M BACK! Pettitte comes out of retirement.” - NY Post

"ANDY’S BACK - Pettitte’s curveball: 2.5M Yankee deal.” - Daily News

“Yanks’ Pettitte, 39, Signs On for Comeback” - NY Times.

It will really be interesting to see how this plays out. Stay tuned.

Oh ... Payton Manning reportedly told The Dolphins that he wasn’t interested in signing with them. Oh, the drama ...

Well, I will close by posting with the third of the seven “Musings from “THE MIND OF BILLI POD (a memoir in progress)” that were accepted by Philosoraptor, The Pontificating Velociraptor of Our Time ...

Honestly ... what does this mean ...

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

GET THEE AWAY BLAHNESS!! SO LONG FUNK!!

Good morning to everyone out there in the hinterlands and boondocks.

Not a nice TGIF for all of my Worker Bee friends==>nasty, ugly, misting rain and 41ยบ @ 7:30am.

BLAH!! Yep, Billi Pod is definitely in a blah induced funk.

The nasty weather contributed to my blahness this morning and ... as you loyal and faithful readers know ... I just posted about the passing of my dear friend Jack Davis.

Losing Jack was expected because his health had been on a downward spiral for quite some time ... but ... that doesn’t make the loss any easier to handle.

Frankly, it makes the preparation of this posting even more difficult because I have been so blessed to be able to be living out my lifetime dream here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

OK ... dammit Bill aka Billi Pod ... Jack wouldn’t want you to be so dramatic ... so ... it’s time to move on ... so ... here goes ... GET THEE AWAY BLAHNESS!! SO LONG FUNK!!

Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s entertainment event ...

THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT, the court room drama over the fate of Judas Iscariot, known for his betrayal of Jesus==>A<==Jesus Christ, what a terrific show!! The fact that I had seen JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR on Wednesday's matinee made this show even more meaningful/enjoyable.

An incredible ensemble cast of 18 is led by Steven Carrieri as Judas; Adyana de la Toree as the defense attorney; Eliud Kauffman as the prosecuting attorney; Bud Stafford as Judge Littlefield (I could see myself in that role, if I had a beard); and, Stephen Alan Wilson as Satan. Many of the cast play multiple roles.

The show is funny, profane, perhaps a bit sacrilegious, and, of course, very thought provoking. The 3 hour 15 minute running time (one intermission) is tolerable, although I believe at least 15 minutes could easily be cut.

Billi Pod says==>See this before it closes on April 6th.

Tonight’s entertainment event is ...

8:30==>ETERNAL EQUINOX - “In 1923 a dashing mountaineer pays a surprise visit to Charleston, the summer home of two of Britain's most important artists, Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. Art, sex, conquest and love collide.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket).

This show is playing at the 59th Street Theatre Complex, one of my favorite venues, as most of you loyal and faithful readers know.

In the name of fair and unbiased reporting I want to share with you that Billi Pod has an awesome entertainment schedule already booked for the upcoming 10 days ...

Fri - March 16 - 8:30==>ETERNAL EQUINOX

Sat - 2:00==>HAND TO GOD;

8:00==>THE YEATS GAME - A Farce of Improbable Darkness

Sun - 22nd AA Birthday (22 years of continuous sobriety);

7:30==>THE SHOW GOES ON - Musicals in Mufti Series

Mon - 8:00==>NEW ENGLAND SYMPHONIC ENSEMBLE @ Carnegie Hall

Tues - 7:30==>NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC @ Avery Fisher Hall

Wed - open at the moment

Thurs - 7:30==>NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC @ Avery Fisher Hall

Fri - 8:00==>CAPITOL STEPS @ Town Hall

Sat - 2:00==>KANDER AND EBB’S “CABARET” @ Symphony Space;

7:00==>MAXIM GORKY’S THE LOWER DEPTHS

Sun - March 25 - 8:30==>MILLIKIN UNIV. CHOIR & FESTIVAL CHORUS @ Carnegie Hall

Wow!! I happen to think this is pretty impressive, but ... I only report ... you decide.

Well, I will close by posting the second of the seven “Musings from “THE MIND OF BILLI POD (a memoir in progress)” that were accepted by The Philosoraptor, The Pontificating Velociraptor of Our Time ...

Honestly ... think about it guys ...

REST IN PEACE JACK DAVIS

On Wednesday night I lost my longtime friend Jack Davis of Bartow, FL.

After a long long battle Jack finally found peace when his life-partner, Jeff Clark, made the tough decision that Jack had suffered enough. It was the right thing to do.

******************

“Jack Davis, 72, of Bartow passed away Wednesday, March 14, at Memorial Hospital of Tampa from complications of diabetes. Born July 14, 1939, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Jack was the son of the late John E. Davis, Sr. and Marian E. Davis of Bartow. He moved to Bartow with his parents from Clearwater, Florida in 1953, and graduated from Summerlin Institute in 1958. Jack retired from the Polk County Clerk of Courts office in 2003 after 40 years of service. After his retirement, Jack volunteered at the Bartow Chamber of Commerce as a Chamber Diplomat, and was named “Diplomat of the Year” in 2007. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bartow. Jack is survived by his partner, Jeff Clark of Bartow; caregiver, Ruth Harrison of Bartow; cousin, Betty McDonald of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and cousin, Jimmy Davis of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Jack will be remembered fondly by his many friends and acquaintances for his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and his acts of kindness, generosity and compassion. He loved helping people, and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Family will receive friends Sunday, March 18, 2012, from 4-6 PM at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 310 S. Broadway Ave, Bartow. Interment will follow at Bartow Wildwood Cemetery.”

********************

Our friendship spanned decades. Jack was a career employee with the Polk County Clerk’s office and was well-known and respected by all of us in the local judicial system.

On a personal basis, Jack was instrumental in helping me make the ultimate transition from Bartow to New York City. He would look out after my Bartow house, until I finally sold it in 1998, and, for years and years, forwarded my mail to me on a weekly basis.

I am so glad that I was able to visit with him several times back in January when I was down there for the birth of my great-granddaughter Saylor Falletta. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to see Jack when I was at my 60th class reunion because he had been transferred to a hospital in Tampa.

As Jack’s health declined his life-partner, Jeff Clark, was always by his side, placing Jack’s needs and well-being above all other things. The love between these two was what made these difficult times bearable. Bless you Jeff!!

Rest In Peace my dear friend. I know you are in a better place.

Wednesday’s Doubleheader Was Epic & Some Breaking News

Yesterday’s entertainment doubleheader was terrific in all aspects ... so let’s get right to it ...

My second visit to JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s dramatized rock-opera version of the last 7 days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, receives the same A as Billi Pod gave it the first time he saw it on March 5th.

My comp. seat was in the very last row in the rear of the orchestra, the last aisle seat, far house right, but no matter. Seated in the general area were a lot of my theater buddies.

And, also in the orchestra area was ... tada ... Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, which probably accounts for making seats available to the various ticketing services. Nope ... no empty seats for Sir Andrew.

In the name of fair and unbiased reporting Billi Pod must share that the opinions of his theater-buds were as diverse as the comments have been on the various chat boards. So what ... I still loved it and would see it again in a heartbeat.

When the show was over I connected with Dian Crystal and became the sole member of her posse for the next several hours. We spent the time just wandering around, acting like tourists. The picture of me was taken at Columbus Circle.

We even got a bite to eat and she didn’t order me to have a slice of eggplant pizza. Mainly, I think, because where we ate didn’t serve pizza.

It was amazing how fast the approximately 2 1/2 hours flew by, aided largely by awesome weather and very good company with a native New Yorker.

We then met up with another posse member, Vera Olichney, at City Center to see ...

REGRETS, a drama, set in the 1950s, about a young man who flees Hollywood and heads to a Nevada desert retreat where men go to secure a quickie divorce==>B+

It is a somewhat different story line with excellent acting. For whatever reason, however, I just didn’t connect with any of the characters. Lots of yelling and cussing.

The rest of the posse give it an A- and a B+. It is worth seeing with a discounted ticket.

Tonight Billi Pod has an interesting followup to yesterday’s JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. What, you are no doubt breathlessly asking? Well ... how about this ...

8:00==>THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT - “Set in a court room somewhere between Heaven and Hell two attorneys and a parade of famous witnesses – Mother Teresa, Sigmund Freud and Pontius Pilate – argue over the fate of Judas Iscariot, known for his betrayal of Jesus.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

Several of my theater-nut friends have highly recommended this show, which clocks in at 3 hours and 15 minutes, including one intermission.

BREAKING NEWS==>Have some more interesting information to share with you loyal and faithful readers and here it is ... several of my "Musings from THE MIND OF BILLI POD (a memoir in progress)" have been accepted by the Meme website

http://memegenerator.net/

for Philosoraptor, The Pontificating Velociraptor of Our Time, and I will share them with you in the next several postings.

The Rolling Stones Tribute Concert Was Terrific!!

Good morning everyone. Let’s get right to the important stuff ... like Billi Pod's thoughts and comments on last night’s entertainment event ...

The Rolling Stones tribute concert at Carnegie Hall was terrific. It started @ 8:10 and was over at 10:30, with no intermission. The pic is of the curtain call.

The opening song was “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and the closing song was “Wild Horses.” There were a total of 21 songs, plus 2 encores.

Dozens of excellent performers. Art Garfunkel and Jackson Browne were the best. No member(s) of The Rolling Stones showed up. Awwwwwww!

A female performer, Rickie Lee Jones, give an extremely bizarre rendition of “Symphony for the Devil.”

The house was sold out and Billi Pod was not the oldest person in attendance. Bottom-line==>Great time, well worth the expensive ticket.

Billi Pod has yet another entertainment doubleheader for today ...

2:00==>JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - “The Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s dramatized rock-opera version of the last 7 days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.” (Broadway - complimentary ticket)

When this showed up on one of my ticket services I instantly booked it. I mean ... how could I pass up this Broadway show with a comp. ticket?

Yes, I am going to see it again, snarky chat board critics be damned.

Then for this evening is something new ...

8:00==>REGRETS - “A drama, set in the 1950s, about a young man who flees Hollywood and heads to a Nevada desert retreat where men go to secure a quickie divorce. A tale of friendship, loss and finding the courage of one’s convictions. (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

This show is in very early previews and has generated little, if any, advance buzz.

At this point I am unsure whether I will come back to PHC between shows. The weather is just awesome so I will probably just walk and wander. Hopefully, at some point I will be able to connect with Dian Crystal and her posse.

Need to post this and get ready to head out ... have to pick up my matinee ticket early and not at the box office.

Will close with yet another thing for you loyal and faithful readers to ponder ...

Really .... why?

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

Billi Pod’s Activity Report for February 2012

Yes, my loyal and faithful readers, I know this is late ... but ... I am posting it now because it also serves as my own record of my things and stuff during the month.

If you will take a moment to read further I hope you will agree that February was another interesting, event-filled month for Billi Pod ... so ...

In checking my daily log (log, not diary - real guys don’t keep diaries) I find that during February 2012 Billi Pod attended/saw/did the following:

2 Broadway shows (The Phantom of the Opera and Venus In Fur); 29 Off Broadway Shows; and, 6 classical music concerts (including my 3 series subscription to the New York Philharmonic).

During the month there were 10 doubleheaders and 1 tripleheader.

I wasn’t away from The Big Apple during the month.

Perhaps one of the most amazing/awesome stats is the fact that during the month there was only 1, repeat, 1 time that I stayed in PHC without attending some entertainment event either during the day or the evening.

This means, my loyal and faithful readers, that Billi Pod remained on his frenetic Big Apple schedule of attending some entertainment event 9 out of 10 nights. Actually for you number crunchers the percentage is 96.7%. AWESOME!!!

I posted daily on my FaceBook Wall and 31 times on this blog website.

The blog had 1,661 page views during the month, bringing the total for the past 12 months to 17,790 (Awesome !!)

During the month I was able to have time with friends, including: John Scott Reed and Justin Allen Pifer; and, some of my AA buddies (you know who you are).

Also during the month Billi Pod was again with Dian Crystal’s posse on several occasions, along with Marty Kosarik, Vera Olichney, Julie Miller and others. Thank you so much, My Lady!

Oh, it was also while serving as a member of Dian’s posse that I was forced into eating a slice of eggplant pizza. The image of that event has yet to leave my mind and the taste recurs in my dreams. If it doesn’t leave by next week I will probably seek therapy of some sort, somewhere.

So ... there you have it. Not bad for a soon-to-be 78yr old guy ... but ... it is up to you loyal and faithful readers to determine because ...

I report ... you decide.
