THE SOUND OF MUSIC==>MEH & BREAKING NEWS!!

Friday==>OK, let’s get right to it ... the it being your favorite blogger's thoughts on last night’s highly anticipated live broadcast of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, starring Carrie Underwood as Maria==>MEH.

I really wanted to like this production, and there was a lot to like about it, but, it really didn’t set me on fire as I had anticipated. In fact, as the 3-hour show plodded to its finale I found myself rather wistfully watching the clock. The final 45-minutes had way-too-many commercial breaks.

Carrie did an acceptable job in singing but her lack of acting skills adversely impacted the overall quality of the show. There was a total lack of chemistry between her Maria and the stern Captain von Trapp.

Audra McDonald was wonderful as the Mother Abbess, especially when singing “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and the 7 von Trapp children did an excellent job singing and dancing.

Most of the media critics have been less than favorable about the show and almost all have basically skewered Underwood’s Maria.

Soooooo ... the experience of watching THE SOUND OF MUSIC, LIVE was==>not a bad one, not a good one, but one that just took a lot of time and energy.

Moving on ...

In yesterday’s posting I mentioned my plans to head over to The Drama Book Store on West 40th Street for the 6:00pm appearance of actor and new playwright Jesse Eisenberg.

Well ... when I got there at 5:30pm the place was already packed. There were two lists ... one for those who had purchased the script for his new play, “The Revisionist,” for $18.00, and the other for those of us who hadn’t.

The downstairs performance space is very small and, of course, those that had laid out the bucks were given the first seating. I was #8 on the “others” list and, unfortunately, they were only able to seat the first 4 on that list. Oh well ...

Came on back to the warm and cozy confines of PHC and settled into watch THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

Moving on ...

It is a gray and nasty day here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. It has been lightly raining all day and it is supposed to continue into the evening.

This show is playing at the Studio Theatre at the Theatre Row Complex, on my block, has a running time of 1:15, without intermission, and runs through December 15th.

It is playing in repertory with ...

9:00==>SHINER - “In 1994 two outcast teens make a pact to die happy - see Nirvana at the Hollywood Bowl then jump off the 101 overpass together. But a first kiss, a restraining order and Kurt Cobain’s declining health threaten their plans. A grunge rock fueled love story.” (Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket)
