Weather/Bum Phillips All-American Opera/Beyond Therapy

Saturday==>Good morning to all of my loyal and faithful readers and followers out there in the morass known as cyberspace.

Your favorite blogger is happy to report that it is a rather pleasant morning here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. Yes ... at 11:00am it is 55ยบ with a mixture of sun and clouds.

Unfortunately, it gets colder overnight and will be back in the low 30s by this time tomorrow. Oh well ...

Let’s get started, then, with Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s “kinda different” entertainment event, the opera ...

BUM PHILLIPS ALL-AMERICAN OPERA, the world premiere celebration of the improbable life of Bum Phillips, a National Football League legend and American icon==>A-

Phillips coached at the high school, college and professional levels.

The story line dwells mostly on his coaching time with the Houston Oilers and his almost obsessive desire to earn a Super Bowl ring. He never did.

After he retired from football Phillips devoted himself to many worthy causes, including repeated visits to penitentiaries like Angola where 70% of the inmates are serving life sentences.

He died on October 18, 2013, at the age of 90.

I have to admit that I had very mixed emotions about this show going in, and, frankly, when it was over. But, as I processed it overnight I came to the conclusion that I liked it a lot more than I originally thought (if this makes any sense).

There is an awesome cast, especially Gary Ramsey as Bum and Alison Bolshoi as his wife Debbie. Interestingly, I was seated next to Alison’s family, her husband, late-teens son and 12-year old daughter, and that was nice.

The staging, with the use of minimal props, is excellent.

Bottom line for me==>it was interesting, thought-provoking, entertaining and it grows on you. If you want something “kinda different” then see it ... if not ... stay far away.

It is being performed at La MaMa on East 4th Street in The East Village, has a running time of almost 2:00, with intermission, and runs through March 30th.

Moving on ...

During the afternoon I will be in front of the tube alternating between the Gators/Tennessee SEC semi-final game and the Yankees/Orioles game.

Then, for the evening, it will be an Off Broadway show in my ‘hood ...

8:00==>BEYOND THERAPY - “This revival of Christopher Durang’s razor sharp 1982 comedy about the search for a meaningful relationship in an insane world may provide the best therapy of all - guaranteed laughter.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

The show is playing at the Theatre Row Complex on my West 42nd Street block, has a running time of 2:00, with intermission, and runs through April 16th.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE!!

Yesterday was another excellent walking day, helped by the fact that my entertainment event last night was in The East Village.

Yesterday’s Pedometer mileage==>4.27 miles (or, 9,346 steps)

Total mileage for 2014==>239.37 miles (average 3.28 miles per day)

GO GATORS & GO YANKEES!!
