God’s Country/Til Divorce Do Us Part/Little Mary Sunshine/New York Philharmonic

Wednesday==>your favorite blogger here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, has another entertainment doubleheader scheduled for today (details below) ... so ... we need to get this posting started with ... first

Billi Pod’s thoughts/comments on yesterday’s staged reading of the musical ...

GOD’S COUNTRY, after discovering that his birth mother lives in America, wealthy Englishman James Watson travels there in 1871 on an epic journey to find his true identity==>powerful, thought-provoking and well-performed.

The show focuses on the difficulties Irish emigrants had just getting by in the NYC slums and the rivalries between their gangs and between their religious factions.

Nick Cartell as James Watson and Chuck Bradley as Tom Killian, Watson’s friend/ rival/friend, were terrific.

The full-house audience was really into the show.

The show has a lot of potential, so I hope it will find a life in a New York venue.

When the show was over I subwayed down to the Union Square area, did a walk and wander session and then it was time for the second part of my entertainment doubleheader ... the Off Broadway show ...

TIL DIVORCE DO US PART, an original musical inspired by the true story of a Broadway producer's wife who is suddenly jilted by her husband after decades of marriage==>C+

The show started off well then descended into repetition and then boredom ... oh ... and we get the message==>all men are basically assholes. Right?

Now, in the name of fair and biased reporting I have to advise you loyal and faithful readers and followers that most of the sold-out audience seemed to be really into the show, but that was kinda to be expected since the audience was 85% female and 15% male aka assholes.

The three female performers were excellent, backed by a male pianist who is, of course, gay.

Billi Pod says==>if you are a female then see this show, if not ... you should probably stay away.

The show, that just opened to mixed reviews, is playing at the DR2 Theater on East 15th Street in the Union Square area, has a running time of 1:30, without intermission, and runs through May 4th.

Moving on ...

Today is another entertainment doubleheader for Billi Pod.

First is an Off Broadway musical ...

2:00==>LITTLE MARY SUNSHINE - “An affectionate spoof that parodies old-fashioned operettas and musicals from the turn of the century, when justice always triumphed.” (Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket

This show ran for 1,143 Off Broadway performances in the late 50s, is part of the Musicals Tonight! series, has a running time of 2:45, with intermission, is playing at the Theatre Row Complex on my West 42nd Street block, and runs through March 16th.

Then, for this evening is a classical music concert ...

7:30==>NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA @ Avery Fisher Hall - The program is: Two symphonies by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen. (season subscription series)

I have to admit that I have no knowledge of Nielsen's work. I am really in the mood for some classical music so I am praying that this will not be an evening of atonal dreck.

In closing ... yesterday was an excellent walking day ...

Yesterday’s Pedometer mileage==>5.08 miles (or, 11,119 steps)

Total mileage for 2014==>227.53 miles (average 3.25 miles per day)

GO GATORS & GO YANKEES!!
