Thursday from The Big Apple

Good afternoon my loyal and faithful readers on this brisk fall day in The Greatest City in the World. Let’s get one thing settled right off the bat - I offer no excuses for not timely posting. I’m sorry, so let it be, OK?

Since the last posting most of my time was spent at Yankee Stadium and it was, for the most part, lots of fun as the Yankees won the Division and clinched the best record in the AL, thereby giving them home field advantage for all of the post season. All they have to do is play good ball and advance to the World Series. I have my post season tickets in hand for each of the series.

It was very pleasing to be present as The Bronx Bombers swept The Boston FuckSox again and evening their season record at 9-9 after they got off to a terrible 0-8 start.

In response to several kinda snarky emails - yes, I do understand that not everyone is interested in baseball and not everyone loves the Yankees and/or The Gators, but, remember, ahem ... this is my blog ... and I am what I am ... a diehard Yankee and Gator fan, so just get the fuck, oops ... I mean f**k ... over it.

However, rather than go into a much-too-long analysis of each game since the last posting, I will summarize the highlights of my 47 regular season games. I saw: the Opening Day Ceremony; Cabrera hit for the cycle; Jeter tie and then break Gehrig’s franchise hit record; A-Rod return to form; CC establish himself as the ace of the team; Mo being Mo yet again; the Yankees beat the FuckSox in 15 innings; clinching of the Division record and the best record in the AL and MLB; the final regular season game; and, a record of 31 wins and only 16 losses for those 47 games, a winning percentage of .659.

Now, my loyal and faithful readers, I will post what my activity schedule is for the next 10 days --

Thursday - 7:30 - New York Philharmonic Orchestra @ Lincoln Center. The program is: EXPO by Mangus Lindberg: Ives’s Symphony No. 2; and, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 performed by Emanuel Ax. (subscription series).

Friday - 7:00 - “The Oldsmobiles” - Off Broadway. “A comedy set on New York’s Manhattan Bridge. Mr. and Mrs. Oldsmobile are perched on the edge contemplating their life together and life hereafter. With the eyes of the NYPD, the fire department, tourists, celebrities, a news anchor, a priest, the mayor, and the Oldsmobiles’ children upon them, the couple relish the attention and ponder the possibilities of life and death through a sparkling comedic lens. Starring Richard Masur and Alice Playte.” ($9.00 TDF ticket). Let’s see if I have this right - a “comedy” about a couple contemplating suicide by jumping off a bridge? Yeah, this should be fun.

Saturday - 2:30 - “Blind Lemon Blues” - Off Broadway. “This show pays homage to Blind Lemon Jefferson, America's best-selling country blues singer of the 1920s. It combines blues, gospel, R&B, soul, doo-wop and rap to evoke the enduring legacy of Blind Lemon and his contemporaries” (discounted TDF ticket). This is being presented at The York Theater and has received very good reviews. As many of you know, I am financial supporter of this theater group.

8:00 - “Inventing AVI (and Other Theatrical Maneuvers)” - Off Broadway. The press blurb for this show in early previews is: “Who has the right to tell your story? This world premiere comedy of theatrical manners grapples with questions of authorship and identity as two sisters of a certain age - one a rich producer, the other a diva stage actress - collaborate on a hit play from a sexy Israeli writer. The play seems autobiographical, but the story's actually stolen - from a place closer to home than the sisters could ever imagine.” (discounted TDF ticket). Now this sounds interesting.

Sunday - 2:00 - “Eye of God” - Off Broadway. “In Kingfisher, Oklahoma, an innocent young woman meets a strong man of faith. A young boy witnesses a brutal murder. Where is the line between moral and radical? A love story between the lonely, the troubled, the forgotten and the radical believer who can save them.” (complimentary ticket). This show has gotten generally favorable reviews and is being performed at a theater on my block.

7:00 - “Memphis” - Broadway. “From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, comes a new Broadway musical that focuses on two young collaborators: a black female singer whose career is on the rise but who can't break out of segregated clubs and a white radio DJ whose love of music transcends race lines and airwaves. When the two work together, her soulful music reaches radio audiences everywhere, and the Golden Era of early rock 'n' roll takes flight. But as things start to heat up, whether the world is really ready for their music - or their love - is put to the test. (discounted TDF ticket). This musical is still in previews and has received very good advance theater “buzz.” It is being produced by Randy Adams, who I met through Sarah Koeppe, David Huddleston’s wife.

Monday - 8:00 - “Brighton Beach Memoirs” - Broadway. “BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS centers on young Jewish teen Eugene Morris Jerome and his extended family living in a crowded home in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn in 1937: his overworked father, Jack; overbearing mother, Kate; his older brother Stanley; Kate's widowed sister Blanche and her daughters, Nora and Laurie. As Eugene spends his time daydreaming about a baseball career, he must also cope with his family's troubles, his awkward discovery of the opposite sex and his developing identity as a writer.” (discounted TDF ticket). This is in very early previews and will ultimately run in repertory with “Broadway Bound.”

Tuesday - 7:00 - “Such Things Only Happen in Books” - Off Broadway. “An evening of five short plays by the American master. The program includes Such Things Only Happen in Books, in which a domestic life is slowly unwrapped to reveal the complexities at the heart of all families; Cement Hands, in which an uncle tries to explain to his niece the precariousness of marrying a tight-fisted young fellow; and The Angel That Troubled the Waters, which shows the healers pain, and how his suffering makes him most human.” (discounted TDF ticket). This performance is at a theater on my block.

Wednesday - 8:00 - Game 1 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) - Yankees vs. either The Tigers or The Twins @ Yankee Stadium (post season ticket).

Thursday - 8:00 - “Oleanna” - Broadway. “Oleanna is an account of a power struggle between a male university professor and one of his female students. Starring Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles and directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, David Mamet's incendiary play is regarded as one of the most provocative dramas of our time dividing audiences into heated debate by compelling them to side with either character. This new production marks the Broadway premiere of this visceral, modern-day classic.” (discounted TDF ticket). In early previews.

Friday - 8:00 - Games 2 of the ALDS @ Yankee Stadium ( post season ticket).

Saturday - October 10 - 3:00 - “A Boy and His Soul” - Off Broadway. “Colman Domingo, of Broadway's Passing Strange tells the story of a young man's coming of age in late 70s West Philadelphia.” (discounted TDF ticket). This show has gotten very good reviews.

8:00 - Gators vs. LSU on CBS - Go Gators!! I am praying that Tebow is OK and can play the entire game.

So, my loyal and faithful readers, the totals for the upcoming 10 days are: 3 Broadway shows; 6 Off Broadway shows; 1 New York Philharmonic concert; and, 2 post season baseball games. Not bad, not bad at all.

Go Yankees and Go Gators!!
