Wednesday==>Yes, my loyal and faithful readers and followers, it is still very cold here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, but ... right now it’s bitterly cold almost everywhere in the midwest and northeast ... so ... why don’t we just move on to something more interesting ... like ...
Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s long overdue entertainment event ...
DISASTER! A 1970s Disaster Movie Musical, the blissfully silly jukebox musical that is a campy spoof of 1970s disaster flicks==>A.
In yesterday’s posting I really didn’t do justice to the underlying theme of this terrific musical comedy ... so here it is ...
“It’s 1979, and Manhattan’s first floating casino and discotheque is having the grand opening. Unknown to the guests and staff, the pier that houses the huge boat was drilled into the center of an unstable fault-line which will inevitably prompt a tragic earthquake. There is no limit to the catastrophes that face the people whose lives intersect at the casino.”
The story line is woven around a song catalog based on 1970s hits, very similar to what was done with the ABBA songbook in MAMMA MIA.
It is very in-your-face funny and is extremely well performed by a stellar cast, lead by Seth Rudetsky (the co-writer), Matt Farcher and Mary Testa. I also have to single out young Jonah Verdon who plays boy/girl twins Ben and Lisa. He switches from one to the other at breakneck speed.
The almost full house (on a very frigid night) was very much into the show and the cast got a roaring standing ovation at curtain call.
It is playing at St. Luke’s Theatre on West 46th Street, has a running time of 2:10, with intermission, and runs through March 31st.
Billi says to his Tri-State theater friends==>you gotta see this show!!
When I left the theater, with a smile on my face, the temperature was 9º, wind chill down to -8º. The relatively short walk back to PHC was pretty unpleasant, however, the show made it all worthwhile.
Now ... moving on to today ...
Tonight’s entertainment event will be a return visit to ...
7:00==>WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? BACHARACH REIMAGINED. - “Twenty-five-year-old musician and actor Kyle Riabko performs his unique, soulful arrangements of the Bacharach songbook backed by an eclectic group of young singers and dancers. Bacharach’s timeless music is reintroduced through the eyes and ears of a new generation.” (Off Broadway - discounted ticket)
This well-reviewed show is playing at the New York Theater Workshop in the East Village, has a running time of 1:30, without intermission, and has been extended again through February 2nd.
I saw back on December 13, 2013 and gave it an A. I totally enjoyed it. When it showed up for a discounted ticket I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see it again.
Moving on ...
