Condom on the Sleeve - NYC 12/22/95

Several people have again emailed and texted about the classic and true “Condom on the Sleeve” story back from the Winter of 1995, my first December in the Big Apple following my retirement on December 31, 1994, so ... here it is again in its original form, totally unedited, with no revisions:

Subj: December 22 - Only in the Big Apple

Fellow cyberpersons:

This is just too good to wait until the newsletter. It just happened to me.

Picture this - coming home from the theater at about 10:45pm and riding the E train to the Lexington Avenue station. It is very crowded with a lot of shoppers and a lot of women. At the station there is a long escalator ride up to the exit and transfer platform, I would guess it to be about 3 stories. People are crowded onto the escalator and no one is racing up the steps due to the crowded conditions.

To my left, dressed to the nines in a very expensive looking fur, is everyone's matronly Grandmother. Immediately in front of us is a very very blond young man of about 20, I would guess. Very Nordic looking and rather tall. He has a large backpack and a very large duffel bag which he puts down beside him. About 1/3 of the way up, he bends down very awkwardly and opens the duffel bag, reaches in and starts to pull out a scarf, which apparently is stuck on something. He gives it a tug and when he does, out fly two condom packages.

One of the condoms lands at my feet. The other one lands on and sticks to the right sleeve of Grandmother, who does not appear to be aware of what happened because she is staring straight ahead with that far away look only New Yorkers can get. The kid turns ten thousand shades of red, as only blonds can do. I reach down and pick up the package at my feet and hand it to him with a smile but without saying a word. He mumbles something. Grandmother, however, is still staring straight ahead, with the condom on her sleeve, so the kid just turns back around facing up the escalator.

Nothing is said and I decide that silence on my part is the better part of valor. When we get about 20 feet from the top, Grandmother reaches over with her left hand and takes the condom off of her right sleeve. She holds it in her left hand and taps the kid on the shoulder. He jumps a foot. Just before we get off, I hear her say, with the sweetest Grandmotherly smile: "You forgot this one young man, you may need it in this city." She gets off the escalator and walks to the exit without looking back, the kid heads to the transfer platform, still red in the face, and I can hardly walk because I am laughing so hard.

Only in New York, folks, only in New York.

Sometime Billi Pod Can Be Plain Dumb!!

OK, in the name of fair and unbiased reporting Billi Pod has to admit that sometimes he does “dumb” things. What am I talking about?

Well, yesterday it was majorly dumb for a soon-to-be 77 year old guy to sit through the 9 innings of freezing weather just to watch a baseball game, even though it was The Opening Game. Yes, the Yankees won 6-3 behind a stellar game offensively and defensively from center-fielder Curtis Granderson, a 3-run homer by Teixeira and 3 scoreless innings from the bullpen.

But the weather was miserable - 37ยบ. It misted rain for the entire time and the wind was howling and I was freezing even though I had all of the proper winter gear ... with the exception of my gloves. My hands were virtually numb from the second inning on.

Now I have to admit that my heart meds make me more susceptible to cold weather, but still ...

Why didn’t I just leave at, say, the 5th inning or at least find a warmer spot somewhere in the stadium? Easy answer ... if I had done that my seat mates and buds would have given me unspeakable grief for the remainder of the season. Not joking, they would have. So Billi Pod stayed in his seat, as did they.

So, yeah ... it was dumb ... but Billi Pod was there from beginning to end in support of his Yankees ... and he feels fine today, so ...

Anyway ... on to other things, like my report card on last night’s BORN YESTERDAY==>B+<==First preview performance. This is why there had been no advance buzz on the show.

It is funny and thought provoking. Dated, yes, but also rather topical in today’s political scene. Jim Belushi is excellent as is the rest of the outstanding cast.

Billi Pods says==>see it.

Tonight’s entertainment event is ...

8:00==>NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA @ Avery Fisher Hall - “Prokofiev’s Overture in B; Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2; and , violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter performing a new work by Gubaidulina (who??).” (subscription series complimentary ticket).

I am working on the entertainment stats for March and they are awesome. I honestly think it will be near the top for the number of entertainment events, maybe even in first place. Will probably post the info tomorrow.

BREAKING NEWS==>last night, around 12:30am, I attempted to log onto my favorite Broadway theater website, All That Chat

http://www.talkinbroadway.com/allthatchat/

I received a notification that the site had been purchased by The New York Times and that access to the site would be limited to those who where daily subscribers of The Times. Details would be emailed to us in the morning. OMFG!! Noooooooooo!!

Billi Pod went absolutely ballistic. What a “sellout” but at least I would have free access since I am a daily subscriber to The Times. But there was nothing from them in my email inbox this morning. WTF is going on thought I? I was really upset.

Well, my loyal and faithful readers, I am happy to report that it was all an April Fools Day joke. Needless-to-say, this morning the website is filled with posts from folks like me admitting that we had been 110% duped. Very very funny.

Monday - Billi Pod Is Alive and Well!!

Hello Again!! Yes, my loyal and faithful readers, I am alive and well in New York City, The Greatest City in the World and Billi Pod is totally without legitimate reasons for not posting to this blog since Sunday, November 28th. My bad!!

Oh, I have some excuses, like: “The Gator’s Suck Blues” or “The Cold Weather Blahs” or “A Runny Nose Dripping” but they are all so lame that I won’t bore you with them. To make matters worse, I have been posting daily on my FaceBook Wall. Oh well ... I do appreciate the emails, texts and messages of concern. I will try to do better in the future - I promise.

I have been doing the usual things and stuff up here. Yes, it has been cold and very windy. I have also just finished compiling the stats for the month of November and they are pretty awesome, in my opinion. I will post them either later tonight or tomorrow and you can decide.

A kinda strange thing happened a couple of nights ago as I was sitting in front of this ‘puter trying to mentally compose a blog update. What, you are no doubt breathlessly asking? Well, suddenly out of my head spewed a whole series of random comedic and bizarre thoughts and observations that had no sequences or relationship to one another, it was just ... out they came, one after another. I actually felt almost possessed.

Where they came from I have no idea but I feverishly made a list and have posted them, 100% unedited, on my FaceBook Wall in the order I wrote them down, starting with last Saturday’s posting.

I call them: “Musings from THE MIND OF BILLI POD (a memoir in progress)” and here are the first 3 so you will be up-to-date:

“An Atlas Shrugged is akin to an Okra Winfrey.”

“Joshua fought and won the Battle of Jericho despite being uncircumcised.”

“No matter where you were born, daylight savings time is worth two in the bush.”

Yes, I am afraid you will have to live with this list in subsequent postings for quite some time.

Tonight’s entertainment event is --

7:00==>THE EXTRAORDINARY ORDINARY-“follows a group of friends as they face the challenges of life in Manhattan and reveals how one life-altering event forces each of them to discover the extraordinary beauty in the most ordinary of days.” At a theatre on my block.

BREAKING NEWS==>Gators vs. Penn State in the Outback Bowl. With the woeful seasons both of these teams had it could actually be called the Toilet Bowl. Would I go if I was in Florida? Oh hell yes!!!!

GO GATORS!!

"Unusualality" In The Big Apple

One of the many reasons I love living in The Big Apple is the diversity of the almost limitless entertainment opportunities that are available 24/7, especially as it relates to the theater scene - Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway.

As I was looking at my daily log (log, not diary - real guys don’t keep diaries) I was struck with the, let’s say, "unusualality" (I think I just coined a new word) of 3 upcoming shows I have scheduled, one Broadway and two Off-Broadway.

Now, my loyal and faithful readers, I’m not making up what follows because even Billi Pod’s rather warped sense of humor could never have conceived the story-lines/plots of the 3 shows that I will describe for you below, so please keep reading ---

Tomorrow night (Friday) is:

“Made in Heaven” - Off Broadway. These entire advance blurb for this show is: “Conjoined twins Max and Benjie share everything -- a life, a career, even a penis. But when they plan to propose to their mutual girlfriend, Benjie reveals a secret so big it threatens to tear the brothers apart. Family ties are put to the ultimate test in this irreverent comedy about love in all its various forms -- and the messy complications that invariably get in the way.” (complimentary ticket).

I have learned that the “secret” is - Benjie is gay. The show had a sold-out run at the recent Midtown International Theatre Festival.

Now the Broadway show on Tuesday the 27th (and this is the entire title) is:

“In the Next Room or the vibrator play” - Broadway. The press blurb, somewhat edited for length, is: “This new Broadway play is set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity, when some doctors utilized vibrator therapies on their female patients in the name of medical treatment. And what did the women think was happening to them when doctors allayed their so-called 'hysteria' with a very personal newfangled machine? That is what playwright Sarah Ruhl wondered when she set out to write this play. Hysteria was a real diagnosis, and a quite common one given to women in the Victorian age. Just as common was medical treatment with electrical stimulating machines, the vibrators of the day, to ease their condition. It is the provocative, funny and touching story of a young doctor and his wife. Dr. Givings (Michael Cerveris) is obsessed with the marvels of technology and what they can do for his patients. His wife, Catherine, (Laura Benanti) is only a bystander in her husband's world - listening at the door from the next room as he treats his female patients. Dr. Givings is not sure exactly how the vibrators help the women he treats - but they do keep coming back. The only woman whose problem is not helped by the doctor is his own wife who longs to connect with him - but not electrically.” (discounted TDF ticket)

There’s not much I can add to the above except to remind you that it is being produced on B R O A D W A Y!!!!

And then my trifecta is completed on Sunday, November 1, with:

“Circumcise Me” - Off Broadway. “Yisrael Campbell is just your average Irish-Italian Catholic kid from Philly, comic actor, sober alcoholic, recovering drug addict, husband, father, Reform, Conservative, Unorthodox, Orthodox Jew. His name is Yisrael Campbell, (the artist formerly known as Christopher), and this is his story - a spiritual journey stretching across four decades, two continents, and three circumcisions.” (discounted TDF ticket).

Again, there’s nothing I can add to the above except to say that it sounds like it should be a lot of fun.

So, my loyal and faithful readers, I hope you agree with me about the “unusualality” of these three shows. Only in New York!!

Now, briefly on to other things. All of this is being written on Thursday afternoon as I anxiously await the 5th and hopefully final Yankees vs. LA Angels ALCS series game. I want the Yankees to win tonight so they can have plenty of rest before facing the Phillies in Game One of the World Series on Wednesday the 28th, at Yankee Stadium (and, of course, I will be there).

I had a great time last night with Michele Purcell and her friends Mary Ann Pipping and Mayme Clark of Polk County, FL. They saw the wonderful musical “Billy Elliot” and when the show was over we met up at Angus McIndoe for a great after-theater dinner. When our meal was over we then walked over to 420 W. 42nd Street so they could check out Penthouse C. Thankfully, I hadn’t left anything embarrassing laying around. I can report that they liked my new pad, especially the awesome views. So, Gals, it was great being with you and enjoy the rest of your time In The Greatest City in The World.

Before I end this posting I want to recommend a very funny, albeit risquรฉ, movie called “Zombieland” starring Jessie Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson. This is the synopsis:

“The entire world is hit with an apocalyptic infection that turns people into zombies once they have been bitten by an infected zombie. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is a young geek who has a lot of phobias about almost everything from clowns, to bathrooms, to checking the back seat of cars. Being alone and scared of the outside world has kept him alive. His new fear is being eaten by zombies. To survive, Columbus has begun making a long list of rules to survive. Each time he gives you one of his rules, you see an example of his rule in action. Columbus explains to the audience in a background voice such as wearing your seat-belt, or the double-tap rule after you shoot a zombie make sure he is dead by shooting him in the head again. This is not a wasted shot. The number 1 rule is to be sure that you can outrun the zombies, because the overweight and slow people were caught first. He decides to go home to Columbus to see if his parents are still alive. Along the highway, he meets Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) a redneck zombie killer who loves Twinkies and misses his puppy Buck. They team up and head for Tallahassee. On the way they meet and join forces with two girls, Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abagail Breslin). They may be the last surviving people on earth, and they must rely on each other to survive.”

If you need a laugh or are in the mood for something bizarre and funny, then I highly recommend this show. If not, stay the Hell away because you will hate it.

Go Yankees and Go Gators!!

Thursday - Hot Off the Internet

This just in, my loyal and faithful readers, an update on “You Know You Are A Redneck When ...”

“You take your dog for a walk and you both use the same tree.

You can entertain yourself for more than 15 minutes with a fly swatter.

Your boat has not left the driveway in 15 years.

You burn your yard rather than mow it.

The Salvation Army declines your furniture.

You offer to give someone the shirt off your back and they don't want it.

You have the local taxidermist on speed dial.

You come back from the dump with more than you took.”

Yes, it feels soooooooo good to be back in the “I report - you decide” mode. You are so very welcome.

Men vs. Women - a biased report

In the name of fair and impartial reporting I have to share with you, my loyal and faithful readers, something that is making the internet rounds, obviously written and circulated by the Feminazi crowd who are still having problems dealing with the inherent differences between males and females. This is it:

He said . . . I don't know why you wear a bra; you've got nothing to put in it.
She said .. . You wear pants don't you?

He said .. . .Shall we try swapping positions tonight?
She said . . That's a good idea - you stand by the ironing board while I sit on the sofa.

He said . . .. What have you been doing with all the grocery money I gave you?
She said . Turn sideways and look in the mirror!

On a wall in a ladies room . .. "My husband follows me everywhere."
Written just below it, "I do not."

Q. How many honest, intelligent, caring men in the world does it take to do the dishes?
A. Both of them.

Q. How does a man show that he is planning for the future?
A. He buys two cases of beer.

Q. What is the difference between men and government bonds?
A. The bonds mature.

Q. Why are blonde jokes so short?
A. So men can remember them.

Q How many men does it take to change a roll of toilet paper?
A. We don't know; it has never happened.

Q. What do you call a woman who knows where her husband is every night?
A. A widow.

Q. Why are married women heavier than single women?
A. Single women come home, see what's in the fridge and go to bed. Married women come home, see what's in bed and go to the fridge.

Q. What is the one thing that all men at singles bars have in common?
A. They're married.

Man says to God: "God, why did you make woman so beautiful?"
God says: "So you would love her."
But God," the man says, "why did you make her so dumb?"
God says: "So she would love you."

Even though my responsibility is to report and then leave it to you well-educated and unbiased readers to form your own opinion(s), I do feel it is appropriate for me, just this once, to make the following "personal" observation:

With that, I still only report - you decide.

Monday - Some Help for the Female Gender

In recognition of my unsullied reputation for Fair and Unbiased reporting, and in response to a number of rather testy emails, I feel that it is incumbent on me to reveal that I have also done extensive Internet research into why females have such a difficult time understanding the male universe.

I doubt that many of you loyal and faithful readers knew this, but several years ago I presented a paper at the Annual Meeting of W.O.M.A.N. (Woman Over Men Always, Numnutz) in Boise, Idaho, wherein I attempted to explain the female perception of what a man says versus what the man actually means. I thought it was so obvious that it didn’t need to be reduced to written text, but the reaction of my audience seemed to indicate that perhaps we males overestimate the extent of female logic and cognitive skills.

So, having said all of this, and in order to be of assistance to my many female friends and loyal readers, I will now share some (actually just a little bit) of the material I presented to W.O.M.A.N.--
----------------------------------------------
WHAT HE REALLY MEANS:

"Will you marry me?" REALLY MEANS, "Both my roommates have moved out, I can't work the washer/dryer, and there is no more peanut butter."

"It's a guy thing," REALLY MEANS, "There is no rational thought pattern connected with it.

"Can I help with dinner?" REALLY MEANS, "Why isn't it already on the table?"

"It would take too long to explain," REALLY MEANS, "I have no clue how it works."

"We're going to be late," REALLY MEANS, "Now I have a legitimate excuse to drive like a maniac - get the f**k out of my way people."

"Take a break, honey, you're working too hard," REALLY MEANS, "I can't hear my game over the vacuum cleaner."

"Honey, we don't need material things to prove our love," REALLY MEANS, "Dammit, I forgot our anniversary again."

"It was a really good movie," REALLY MEANS, "It's got guns, knives, fast cars, and naked women."

"You know how bad my memory is," REALLY MEANS, "I remember the words to the theme song of "F Troop,” the address of the first girl I ever kissed, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of every car I've ever owned, but I forgot your birthday."

Oh, don't fuss. I just cut myself. It's no big deal," REALLY MEANS, "I have actually severed a limb, but will bleed to death before I admit I'm hurting."

"I missed you soooooo very much," REALLY MEANS, "I can't find the remote, the kids are hungry and we are out of toilet paper."

"I'm not lost, dammit, I know exactly where we are," REALLY MEANS, "No one will ever see us alive again."
--------------------------------------------

You are so really welcome.

More Reasons Why Males Are Happier Than Females

As many of you faithful readers no doubt remember, back on July 28th I posted the results of some extensive Internet research regarding the logical reasons why we males are happier in this World of ours than our female counterparts. I directed you to the acclaimed website: www.werulelivewithitbitches.com. to post other reasons/factors and over 650 of you did, in fact, post additional reasons. After further review I have conclude that it is important to share this additional information with you, my faithful readers.

I also must unhappily report that the July 28th posting unleashed a torrent of virulent emails from the Feminazi clique, but, they will not and cannot stop me from my responsibility of continued Fair and Unbiased Reporting, so ...

Some additional reasons males are happier than females -

We know stuff about tanks.

Dry cleaners and hair cutters don't rob us blind.

We can go to the bathroom without a support group in tow.

We can leave the motel bed unmade.

We can kill our own food.

If we are 34 and single, nobody notices or cares.

We can quietly enjoy a car ride from the passenger's seat.

We don't have to cleanup if the meter-reader is coming.

We can quietly watch a game with a buddy for hours without ever thinking: “Why is he mad at me."

Gray hair and wrinkles only add character.

We can drop by to see a friend without bringing a little gift.

If another guy shows up at the party in the same outfit, we just might become lifelong friends.

Our pals will never trap us with: "So, notice anything different?"

Remember - I just report - you decide.

My Internet Research - The Blue Pill

I am posting this information as evidence to you, my loyal and faithful readers, that I am still doing the Internet research that you have come to love, respect and need, so, without further delay --

Generic Names For Viagra - “The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were: Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.”

More research results cumming soon.

Monday - Why Males Are Happier Than Females

Golly, I don’t want to get caught up in this whole male vs. female controversy, but, I think that you, my unbiased readers, deserve to have the benefit of my internet research into some of the reasons why males are happier in this World of ours than our female counterparts. One of the benefits of being retired is having the time to do extensive research into issues such as this. Thus far I have identified over 7,218 factors/reasons that contribute to male happiness. The following listing is by no means comprehensive, although I vouch for the authenticity of each factor/reason. Please remember - I am just reporting; it is up to you to decide.

So, some of the reasons males are happier than females --

Our last name stays put.

The garage is all ours.

Wedding plans take care of themselves.

Chocolate is just another snack.

We can be President.

We can never be pregnant.

We can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. We can wear NO shirt to a water park.

Car mechanics tell us the truth.

The world is our urinal.

We never have to drive to another gas station restroom because “this one is just too icky.”

We don't have to stop and think which way to turn a nut on a bolt.

Same work, more pay.

Wrinkles add character.

Wedding dress $5000. Tux rental - $100.

People never stare at our chest when we’re talking to them.

The occasional well-rendered belch/fart is practically expected.

New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle our feet.

One mood 98.5% of the time.

Phone conversations are over in 60 seconds flat.

We know stuff.

A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase.

We can open all our own jars.

We get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness.

If someone forgets to invite us, he or she can still be our friend.

Our underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack.

Three pairs of shoes are way more than enough.

We are unable to see wrinkles in our clothes.

The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades.

We only have to shave our face and neck.

We can play with toys for all our life.

One wallet and one pair of shoes -- one color for all seasons.

We can wear shorts no matter how our legs look.

We can "do" our nails with a pocket knife.

And, we can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes.
------------------------------------------
I have no doubt that many of you will want to add additional reasons/factors and you may do so by going to the website: www.werulelivewithitbitches.com.

Had a very nice breakfast/brunch this morning with student/bartender/manager Scott Reed at The Clinton Street Baking Company a very trendy eatery in the Lower Eastside.

Gotta post this and then get ready to head out to The House That Ruth Built for the Yankees/Orioles game.

Go Yankees!!

Friday -Unisex Bathrooms

Unisex Bathrooms

I don’t know about other parts of the good ole U S of A, but here in The Big Apple unisex bathrooms are becoming more and more common, especially in venues that have recently been refurbished.
Frankly, as a guy I find them to be annoying as hell as we guys are interspersed with you gals in the long lines waiting for our time to pee or whatever.

I thought that this sign might be of some benefit.

Friday - The Entertainment Pallet Remains Full

I have now pretty much completed my entertainment agenda for the next two weeks, yes, that is correct, for the next two weeks. This is pretty amazing for someone who has the Myers-Briggs Personality Profile of INTP.

What is the Myers-Briggs Profile, you ask? Well, in a nutshell:

“The purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people’s lives. The essence of the theory is that much seemingly random variation in the behavior is actually quite orderly and consistent, being due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment.”

Over the years I have taken numerous MB personality tests and the results have always been the same, INTP. When I was Chief Judge I had my fellow Judges voluntarily take the test and most of them did. It was very interesting. Why am I writing about this now? I really don’t know, but I think I will post a detailed report of the INTP personality profile later on just to have it on record. Why? I still don’t know, so ... just live with it.

Now, back on topic ... what the next two weeks means entertainment-wise:

Friday - 8:00 - “The Time of Mendel’s Trouble: A madcap musical of Biblical Proportions” - “When Mendel Moskowitz gets a surprise visit from The Burning Bush in his apartment in Brooklyn, his life turns topsy-turvy. Together with his new friend, Murray Schwartz from Miami Beach, they become the two prophets of the Apocalypse, and embark on a madcap spiritual journey that leads them all the way to Jerusalem for some miraculous end-time adventures. An epic musical excursion through the Book of Revelation, the show incorporates a Romeo & Juliet-type love story, political satire, comedy, tragedy, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil when Messiah finally comes to earth. The end of the world was never so zany!” (complimentary ticket).

Saturday - 8:00 - “What To Do When You Hate All Your Friends” - “Four Chairs Theatre Company presents the world premiere of What To Do When You Hate All Your Friends, an anti-social comedy written by award-winning playwright Larry Kunofsky and directed by Jacob Krueger. Matt is a guy who hates all his friends. Celia is a woman at the center of The Friends, a secret group that has perfected friendship through special rules and a rigid ranking system. Can a guy who hates all his friends and a woman who needs friendship to go by-the-book figure out a way to spend time together without going mental? Tuesday - 7:05 - Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins

Thursday - 8:00 - “Buffalo Gal” - “A.R. Gurney's comedy centers around Amanda, a once successful television personality whose star is now fading. Life imitates art as she returns to her hometown of Buffalo to star in Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard. Monday - 7:05 - Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

Tuesday - 7:05 - Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

Wednesday - 7:05 - Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

Thursday - July 31 - 7:05 - Yankees vs. Los Angles Dodgers

Yeah, I know, back-to-back-to-back ball games again. What can I say except that I made these decisions way back in December 2007 when I renewed by partial season ticket package.

Now, what about the events of the early part of this week? In brief form:

The Bon Jovi concert on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden was super-excellent and my seat was terrific. Terrific except for the trailer-trash big-hipped long-haired bimbo in front of me who stood up during the entire concert flinging her hair this way and that way. Oft times she was the only person in my section who was standing. Bitch!! Now, I feel better. Jon really knows how to work a crowd.

“Eh Joe” on Wednesday night lasted only 30 minutes and I have no clue what the author, Samuel Beckett, was trying to say. In fact, when I got home I did a bit of research online and found out that even the author’s post-production comments were unclear. The house was sold out.

“Around the World in 80 Days” was one of the funniest and best acted shows I have seen in a while. Most of the actors played multiple roles and the humor was very in your face. Loved it. May try to see it again if I can score another complimentary ticket.

I want to end this posting by wishing my long-time friend, Jack Davis of Bartow, FL, a speedy and complete recovery from his current physical problems. Jack fell and broke his hip and that brought on other problems. He has been in the Winter Haven Hospital for about 3 weeks and will be there until at least the end of the month. Jack, my buddy, I am so glad we could talk yesterday and I want you and Jeff to know that the two of you remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Go Yankees!!

Tuesday -To Set Things Straight - Another Topher Picture

I have to admit that I was somewhat taken aback by the negative reaction by my youngest grandson, Topher Falletta of Fleasburg, FL, to last week’s posting of the picture of him taken shortly after his graduation from college. He didn’t mind the picture per se - what upset him was my characterization of it as depicting his major asset. This is an excerpt from his email --

“Beloved Grandfather - I guess the picture was OK, but, you really should remember that since I was a little boy I took greatest pride in my skills as an outdoorsman and an avid hunter of Bambi and her ilk. To set things straight, I have enclosed a recent picture of me taken by friends during a hunting excursion in The Ocala National Forest. This, in my humble opinion, shows your Topher at his best. Please post it to that wonderful blog of yours. With deepest love and affection - your grandson”

SO, GRANDSON-OF-MINE HERE IT IS:

Tuesday - OK, OK - I’m Sorry Topher

Yesterday when I posted the picture of my oldest grandson, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Lex Falletta, I had no idea that it would stir up an avalanche of emails from family and friends who uniformly chastised me for omitting any references to my youngest grandson, Topher Falletta who now lives in Fleasburg, FL.

OK, I admit it, I should have posted something regarding Topher, so I searched my photo archives and found a picture taken last year, just after his graduation from the University of Florida, that more than any other picture I have portrays Topher’s strongest asset. I needn't say anything else because the picture speaks for itself and I am confident that family members and friends will agree - this is the Topher we know and love - at his best. It is at the end of this post. I hope all is forgiven.

Now, on to other things. I had a great time last night at [title of show], in very early previews. Since most Broadway shows are dark on Monday night the audience for this show was filled with lots and lots of younger theater-type folks who were very very loud in their response to the performance. I loved it and laughed a lot. The house seemed to be almost sold out. My TDF discounted seat was excellent, second row of the mezzanine. When the show was over the 4 person cast received a roaring standing ovation.

Interestingly, on some of the theater-related chat boards the audience response(s) are generating some negative reactions from some of the, in my words, “theatre elitists” who carp that the audience must be filled with shills. Not true you snobby butt-holes, the audience is full of people who enjoy the show for what it is, a light musical comedy, so get the fuck over yourselves already and go back to listening to your vinyl cast recordings of “Naughty Marietta,” or whatever.

Gosh, I feel better - now on to what I have scheduled for the next several days:

Tuesday - 7:05 - Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Wednesday - 1:05 - Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays (maybe a walk back to the apartment after the game, maybe).

7:30 - 7 Sins - "Comedian James Judd's hilarious true stories about trying to win his 5th Grade book report competition with My Search for Patty Hearst, and his careers as a forgotten employee of AT&T, a dot.com journalist (leading to an insane night in a Chinese bordello), and as an under-prepared criminal defense attorney.” (complimentary ticket). Sounds very interesting.

Thursday - 10:00 - semi-annual appointment with my Urologist so he can stick his finger up my butt. Oh, yes, lots of fun.

2:00 - East 14th: True Tales of a Reluctant Player - “What do you do when your mother divorces your father, then remarries a devout follower of "that religion," who takes you door-knocking at 7 o'clock in the morning? You escape and move in with dear old dad, of course. Problem solved. Until you discover your real pop is a real pimp...for real. East 14th: True Tales of a Reluctant Player is the hysterical one-man show chronicling Don Reed's true coming-of-age story in 1970s Oakland. From being forced to deliver the gospel door to door, to living on "Ho Row," Don Reed takes you down a road you'll never forget. At times moving and poignant, but always funny to the core.” (complimentary ticket). A very unusual time for a show, 2:00 on a Thursday, so I thought I would give it a shot.

Then, 7:30 - The Strangerer - “The Strangerer collides several of author Albert Camus' works with the first Bush/Kerry presidential debate in 2004. The formalities of the debate are overturned as Bush and Kerry struggle with the question not of if or why an innocent man should be killed (the man in question being moderator Jim Lehrer), but rather what is the proper manner in which to go about killing him. A fascinating and hilarious hybrid, The Strangerer is part political satire, part classical drama, and a murder mystery with the murderers in plan view.” (complimentary ticket). WOW!! What a way to end a very very interesting but different day, and, yes, that is the correct spelling of the title.

Now I've got things to do, so ...

Go Yankees!!

Friday - more thoughts while watching the game

And, to quote Dr. Seuss: “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind."

Friday - something funny on a gloomy day in The Big Apple

It is a gloomy day and rain is predicted any minute so the 2:00 Yankees/Mets game at Yankee Stadium is very iffy. It is supposed to clear up for tonight’s 8:00 game at Shea Stadium and I will be there.

So, what is funny you ask? Well, an unnamed fraternity brother and former roommate who lives in Gainesville and Paris, but who is nameless because of possible prosecution for copyright infringement, sent me a very very funny column written by former Miami Herald humorist Dave Berry about his experience with his first colonoscopy. This is it in its entirety --
++++++++++++++++

“I called my friend Andy Sable, a gastroenterologist, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy. A few days later, in his office, Andy showed me a color diagram of the colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one point passing briefly through Minneapolis. Then Andy explained the colonoscopy
procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring and patient manner.
I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really hear anything he said, because my brain was shrieking, quote, “HE'S GOING TO STICK A TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BUTT!''

I left Andy's office with some written instructions, and a prescription for a product called ''MoviPrep,'' which comes in a box large enough to hold a microwave oven. I will discuss MoviPrep in detail later; for now suffice it to say that we must never allow it to fall into the hands of America's enemies.

I spent the next several days productively sitting around being nervous. Then, on the day before my colonoscopy,I began my preparation. In accordance with my instructions, I didn't eat any solid food that day; all I had was chicken broth, which is basically water, only with less flavor.

Then, in the evening, I took the MoviPrep. You mix two packets of powder together in a one-liter plastic jug, then you fill it with lukewarm water. (For those unfamiliar with the metric system, a liter is about 32 gallons.) Then you have to drink the whole jug. This takes about an hour, because MoviPrep tastes --and here I am being kind -- like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon. The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody with a great sense of humor, state that after you drink it,' 'a loose watery bowel movement may result.'' This is kind of like saying that after you jump off your roof, you may experience contact with the ground.

MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here, but: Have you ever seen a space shuttle launch? This is pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle. There
are times when you wish the commode had a seat belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet. After an action-packed evening, I finally got to sleep.

The next morning my wife drove me to the clinic. I was very nervous. Not only was I worried about the procedure, but I had been experiencing occasional return bouts of MoviPrep spurtage. I was thinking, ''What if I spurt on Andy?'' How do you apologize to a friend for something like that? Flowers would not be enough.
At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging that I understood and totally agreed with whatever the hell the forms said.

Then they led me to a room full of other colonoscopy people, where I went inside a little curtained space and took off my clothes and put on one of those hospital garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that, when you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than when you are actually naked.

Then a nurse named Eddie put a little needle in a vein in my left hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted, but Eddie was very good, and I was already lying down. Eddie also told me that some people put vodka in their MoviPrep. At first I was ticked off that I hadn't thought of this, but then I pondered what would happen if
you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the bathroom, so you were staggering around in full Fire Hose Mode. You would have no choice but to burn your house.

When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled me into the procedure room, where Andy was waiting with a nurse and an
anesthesiologist. I did not see the 17,000-foot tube, but I knew Andy had it hidden around there somewhere. I was seriously
nervous at this point. Andy had me roll over on my left side, and the anesthesiologist began hooking something up to the needle in my hand.

There was music playing in the room, and I realized that the song was Dancing Queen by Abba. I remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that could be playing during this particular procedure, Dancing Queen has to be the least appropriate. You want me to turn it up?'' said Andy, from somewhere behind me. ''Ha ha,'' I said.

And then it was time, the moment I had been dreading for more than a decade. If you are squeamish, prepare yourself,
because I am going to tell you, in explicit detail, exactly what it was like.

I have no idea. Really. I slept through it. One moment, Abba was shrieking``Dancing Queen! Feel the beat from the tambourine . .. . and the next moment, I was back in the waking up area in a very mellow mood. Andy was looking down at me and asking me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even more excellent when Andy told me that it was all over, and that my colon had passed with flying colors.

I have never been prouder of an internal organ!”
++++++++++++++++++++++

Very funny and it reminded me of what happened to me when I had my first colonoscopy about 25 years ago. I was very nervous about the procedure and discussed my feelings with a colleague, David Patterson of St. Petersburg, who had just undergone his first colonoscopy.

David told me I had nothing to worry about and it would be much easier if I remembered to ask the people to relocate the monitors so I could watch the whole process as it was happening. He said I had to ask them otherwise the monitors would not be viewable from where I would be. Kinda odd thought I but what the hell, David just did it so I’ll give it a try. I mean, how often does one get a chance to watch a 17,000 foot cord jammed up one’s butt? Right?

So, on the appointed day as I was laying on the table on my side after all of the prep work I asked the nurse if she would move the monitor around so I could watch the procedure. She just stared at me and then asked me to repeat what I had just said. I did. There was another pause and then she said I would have to ask the Doctor.

When the Doctor came in and we were about to begin I asked him if he could move the monitor so I could watch the whole thing. There was a pause. He looked at the nurse, then at me and then told the nurse to move the monitor around so I could see the screen. I remember he had a slight smile on his face. She did and he asked if I could see OK and I said yes and then he said ... OK, let’s do this ... and ...

The next thing I remember is waking up in the recovery room. Damn David Patterson, damn him to Hell!!!! He had really gotten me. When the Doctor and nurse came in with the favorable results we all had a big laugh although I was very red in the face. The Doctor said it was a first for him and that he could hardly wait to tell his colleagues.

When I got home I called David, cussed him out and then we had a big laugh. It turns out that a friend had done the same thing to him. He never let me forget it. Never.

Go Yankees!!!
