First==>An Apology And Then Reports on Billi Pod’s Awesome Doubleheader.

Let me start this Thursday posting with a sincere and heartfelt apology to those of you loyal and faithful readers out there in cyberspace who read Billi Pod Blogs via the forwarded confirmation email generated by the blog website. For whatever reason yesterday’s initial posting was fraught with errors - grammatical, spelling and context.

As soon as I read my printout copy of the email I recognized most of the errors and made immediate corrections to the posting on the website. Unfortunately, these corrections do not generate confirmation emails.

Over the years since the blog was created (2008) I have tried to make it interesting and informative, but sometimes I do get a bit careless, like yesterday ... so ... if you will forgive me Billi Pod will make every effort to produce a better product for your edification and enlightenment out there in the hinterlands ... yes ... I know that many of you loyal and faithful readers rely on Billi Pod Blogs to brighten your otherwise drab and mundane lives ... so ... Billi Pod will man-up to his responsibilities in the future ...

Moving on ...

Yesterday was an AWESOME entertainment doubleheader for Billi Pod and both shows lived up to his expectations and then some ...

First was THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, the Andrew Lloyd Webber masterwork approaching its 10,000 performance==>A.

When I picked up my ticket from the ticket service rep. I was stunned to find that it was in the orchestra, Row P, seat 22, and not in the upper nosebleed section as I had anticipated.

I am happy to report that the show has not, in my humble opinion, aged and that the performance was full of energy, supporting the sublime Andrew Lloyd Webber score.

Hugh Panaro, in the role of The Phantom, was spectacular - what a terrific voice. He is one of the few actors to have been cast as both The Phantom and Raoul in the Broadway production.

Trista Moldovan, as Christine, held her own and projected both aggressiveness and vulnerability in this difficult role.

When the show was over the audience gave the performers a well-deserved standing ovation. I am so glad I was there.

Had time to come back to PHC for my usual fruit and cheese snack. The weather had begun to get really nasty and when it was time to head out for my 7:00 show it had begun to lightly snow.

VENUS IN FUR, the comedy/drama that goes behind the scenes at an audition, where a man and a woman blur the lines between fantasy and reality==>A.

Let me say right up front that at times I had difficulty in discerning between fantasy and reality on the stage. The show is fast moving, profane, thought-provoking, disturbing, and extremely well acted by Hugh Dancy and Nina Arianda.

The audience was really into the show and gave the two performers a roaring standing ovation.

The New York critics were generally favorable to the earlier production and I predict that they will like this one too.

When Billi Pod got back to PHC he had a nice feeling in his inner self about the AWESOME doubleheader he had just completed.

As I said ... it briefly snowed late yesterday evening but today is bright and clear==>32º @ 8:30am.

Billi Pod’s entertainment event for tonight is ...

7:30==>BAIT N’ SWISH - “What happens when two friends set out to find the perfect mate? Gay speed dating, a trip to Boise and a slew of outrageous drag queens. Two plays, one intermission, forty-nine characters, four folding chairs, a whistle and a buzzer.” (Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket).

Yeah ... I know ... but ... my friends say it is a lot of fun. We will see.

Billi Pod will be heading back down to Bartow, FL, in PFC aka Polk F**king County, in March to participate in his 60th Summerlin Institute Class Reunion.

I will arrive in Bartow on Thursday afternoon, March 1st and return to NYC on Sunday afternoon, March 4th. Of course, I will schedule face time with new Mom, Gina, and great-granddaughter Saylor. More specific details in a later posting.

Good News For The Gator Nation (for a change)

OK my loyal and faithful readers who are also part of The Gator Nation, let’s get started by sharing some good news regarding the future of the Gator football program and by this I mean the results from National Signing Day. Yep ... the results are now in and they have been analyzed ... and ...

The Gators are ranked number 3 ... yes ... NUMBER 3 ... in the nation, behind Alabama and Texas. CHOMP! CHOMP!

The top recruiting classes for 2012 are:

4. Ohio State

5. Stanford

10. Oklahoma

Alabama, Florida, Stanford, Florida State and USC each signed three five-star players.

Not bad for Coach Muskrat in his first year of recruiting, not bad at all.

Now, moving on to Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s ...

NAKED OLD MAN, the one-man show about an eighty-two-year-old man who invites three of his closest friends, all recently deceased, to spend the evening with him==>B-.

Billi Pod really wanted to like this show a lot more but ... the “I’m old but I’m not afraid to die - oh ... wait ... yes, I really am f**king afraid” story line got a bit tiresome even at only an hour. David Margulies was just adequate and that was a bit of a surprise, too. There was no nudity, thank God.

Today's entertainment event is a rare Thursday matinee ...

2:00==>HONESTLY ABE - “This new musical shines a light on the early and little known life of President Abraham Lincoln. Set in Indiana in the early 1820s, and based on historical fact, the show uncovers young Abe as a lanky, prankster boy who loves to read and who can tell quite a story. Abe dreams of quitting the family farm and becoming a riverboat captain. Will his dreams come true?” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket).

This is playing at The Actor’s Temple Theater on West 47th Street and I think that it is a showcase production with a young cast. Looking forward to it.

Oh ... it has gotten colder again, in the low 40s so I guess Winter isn’t over.

Tonight my friend Justin Allen Pifer (a Penn State grad, no doubt in need of closure) will come over to PHC when he gets off work and we will have some catching up face time and then grab a bite at a restaurant in da ‘hood.

Time to head out to my matinee ... so ...

Doubleheader Report Cards; NY Times Screws Up; and, More Breaking News

It is bright, very cold and windy in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

It was only 22º @ 8:30am, but it has “warmed” up to 30º @ 1:30pm.

I am not complaining because this time last year Manhattan was still recovering from the “Christmas blizzard” and most of the outer-boroughs were still without power.

So ... let’s get going with Billi Pod’s report cards on yesterday’s entertainment doubleheader ... starting with ...

HAPPY HOUR by Ethan Coen==>C-<==one of the most unfunny so-called comedies that I have ever seen.

Why? Well ... “mix two ounces of misanthropy, one ounce of anomie and a jigger of acrid humor. Add two splashes of bitters and serve with a twist of tedium. That’s the nightly special — three for the price of one — at ‘Happy Hour,’ a wearying evening of short plays by Ethan Coen."

Actually, I cannot claim credit for the above because it is a verbatim copy of the opening paragraph by one of the New York Times’ theater critics.

Not a good beginning for the doubleheader ... but ... then for the evening there was ...

NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA @ Avery Fisher Hall==>A<==mezzo-soprano Anne Sofia von Otter was absolutely sublime. The works by Haydn and Ravel were beautiful.

The sold-out audience was really into this concert and it was just what Billi Pod needed.

As I write this posting I haven’t an entertainment event scheduled for the evening. This is one of the slowest times of the year for my ticket services and I have no reason to believe anything of interest is going to show up ... so ...

Maybe I will get around to finally seeing either THE TOWER HEIST with Ben Stiller or THE SITTER with Jonah Hill ... we will see ...

Yesterday The Gray Lady aka The New York Times really got caught in a pr blunder. What am I talking about you are no doubt breathlessly asking? Well ... here it goes ...

At 1:06pm yesterday I received an email from The Times advising me that my home delivery subscription had been canceled. It contained a reinstatement offer. WTF thought I, this can’t be right. I was on my way to my matinee show so I waited till I got back to PHC to try to figure out what was going on.

I called the number listed in the email but kept getting a busy signal, which wasn’t a surprise. I kept trying ... still busy.

As I was watching the 5:00pm news there was an item that the email was a “mistake.” WTF??

Well, to make a long story somewhat shorter ... the paper sent out 8.6 million emails begging people not to cancel their subscriptions and to renew. Then, when the problem was called to their attention, management initially blamed spammers, stating that the emails had not been sent by the NYT.

Only later did The Times admit that the email had indeed been sent by them and that it was only intended for approximately 300 former customers.

As you might expect the other local papers have had a ball ....

BREAKING NEWS==>have just made the final plans for my trip down to Polk County aka PFC (standing for Polk F**king County) for the birth of my great-granddaughter.

Briefly - on Thursday, Jan. 5th, will fly down to Tampa, arriving in the afternoon, rent a car and dive over to Bartow, where I will be staying at The Holiday Inn Express. Will return to NYC on Wednesday, Jan. 11th.

In closing==>when I ran across this photograph I was reminded that Half Ass U will be playing Notre Tame at The Chumps Sports Bowl in Orlando, FL, at the Lake Howell High School Stadium, @ 5:30pm today. I can hardly wait. Be still my beating heart!! Go ‘Holes.

Billi Pod’s Update and Some AWESOME Breaking News!!

Well, my loyal and faithful readers - at last Billi Pod has overcome his writer’s block, runny nose and raspy cough, overall feeling of BLAH, general angst etc etc etc enough to make himself sit down in front of his iMac and attempt to bring you hinterland dwellers up-to-date on the things and stuff in Billi Pod’s World.

Yes, a whole week has transpired since my last posting, the longest period between postings during 2011. My bad.

I am appreciative of the various inquiries via email and texts, even though some of them had an underlying snarkiness, attempting to pass as genuine interest.

In my defense I did post daily on my FaceBook Wall, so some of you know what has been going on.

It is Tuesday morning in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, and Billi Pod must confess to still being mired in the morass known as BLAH, but he will not let this keep him from posting ... because ...

Last night I made a promise to self ... “self, I promise that I will write something on my blog tomorrow, I promise.”

Well ... self, being totally uncompromising, has held me to my promise ... so ... tada ... we now have this posting, such as it is.

Wednesday - December 21

The dentist appointment went OK - emotionally draining but OK.

CLOSE UP SPACE - David Hyde Pierce’s character has a breakdown after a shattering confrontation with his fiery daughter==>C<==actually this is giving it/him the benefit of the doubt.

Dysfunctional family to the nth degree. I am getting more than tired with this persistent theme.

Thursday - December 22

Flight out of LGA to Philly left on time and went OK, then things got weird. My flight out of Philly was delayed until 5:15 for "maintenance" issues. Free WiFi was quirky. Alarms kept going off in the gate area.

We were two hours late getting into Columbia. Certainly glad I was using my new carryon bag.

Dr. John and Kathi picked me up. We stayed in and had salad and pizza.

Friday - December 23

We basically just chilled, waiting for son Bill III aka The Bill to arrive from Orlando. He drove up.

He got in around 7:00pm and then the 4 of us had a great dinner at a trendy restaurant in da ‘hood called “California Dreaming”==>way-too-much superrich food.

Saturday - December 24

Dr. John spent hours and hours preparing our Christmas Eve dinner==>prime beef tenderloin. It was absolutely AWESOME. We exchanged gifts before dinner.

Dr. John gave me a new Swissgear carryon bag to replace, in his words ... “that piece of shit you just bought.” Nice. Thank you Dr. John.

Happily Alex aka Army Guy was able to communicate directly with family and friends.

Sunday - December 25th

Dr. John went to work in the early morning and The Bill and I headed out around noon, him back to Orlando and me back to The Big Apple.

My 2:30pm flight out of Columbia was only 1/3 full but the airport at Charlotte was a madhouse, which was a bit of a surprise. Was unable to get an earlier flight but was able to get an exit row seat on my flight, without any additional fee. Nice.

Flight left basically on time and arrived in LGA on time. LGA was also teeming. Took the express bus to The Port Authority.

It was cold and windy. On the way to the apartment I picked up a couple of slices and was back in Penthouse C aka PHC at 9:30pm.

Man, was I tired. My nose began running and I started sneezing and coughing. Damn.

Scanned the mail, read the 3 daily papers, ate some pizza, had some grapes and then crashed at 1:00am, a bit earlier than usual.

It was great being with family during Christmas. As I have become older it has become more and more important for me to be able to spend quality time with my family.

Monday - December 26

This was Billi Pod’s usual errands and stuff day and he was able to accomplish everything even though his nose was still running and he was coughing and sneezing a lot. He felt very BLAH.

Nothing of any import showed up on his ticket services so he considered a movie, but in the end he just opted to stay in. Yeah, I know ... but this is what went down.

Did watch the Saints/Falcons game to see if Drew Brees would break Dan Marino’s record for most passing yardage in a season (5,084). Yes, he did it on his final pass of the game, a TD, giving him 5,087 yards.

OK, my loyal and faithful readers, you are now basically up-to-date. You are welcum.

Woke up this morning at the usual time, 8:00am, and I have to admit that I feel basically kinda BLAH. The nose isn’t running yet and I am not coughing or sneezing at the moment, but I just feel BLAH and kinda out-of-sorts.

Have nothing planned yet for the evening, so I might catch a movie, either TOWER HEIST with Ben Stiller or THE SITTER with Jonah Hill - we will see.

Damn, though, Billi Pod still feels BLAH at 1:00pm

BREAKING NEWS #1==>the due date for the arrival of my great-granddaughter has been moved back. Unless something changes, Gina will go into the hospital in Lakeland on Friday night, January 6, and labor will be induced (or a C-section) the next day. Awesome!!

BREAKING NEWS #2==>unless something unforeseen happens - Alex aka Army Guy will be physically present for the birth of his daughter. YES!! He will be on leave. AWESOME!!

Once the actual dates are known I will make my plans to head down there to be with them.

Bartow Girl Makes It Big-time In The Big Apple

Lauren Purcell, who grew up in Bartow, FL, about a 1/2 mile from my former home, has just been named Editor-In-Chief of the "Everyday with Rachael Ray" magazine, effective January 9, 2012.

Wow!!! Lauren is the daughter of Michele Purcell and the late John Purcell, who we lost way-too-soon. John and I were law school buddies.

Lauren and her sister Anne Purcell Grissinger, a management consultant, moved to The Big Apple together about 15 years ago. The two sisters created a side-business of writing about and providing entertainment advice. Anne is now devoting her time to raising a family.

On this happy note let me move on to ...

Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s KISSING SID JAMES, the comedy/drama about two “lost souls” and their weekend in an English seaside town==>C<==after awhile all of the screaming, shouting and cursing becomes tiresome. Acting is acceptable but it has a totally unbelievable story line.

I disliked both of the so-called “lost soul” characters. One positive note, without giving away too much ... it does not have a rom-com ending.

The show was over at 10:30pm and it was absolutely freezing with a howling wind. Very unpleasant.

At 8:30am this morning it was 23º - the coldest morning of this Fall/Winter.

As I mentioned yesterday ... today is yet another entertainment doubleheader for Billi Pod ...

2:00==>THE VIENNA BOYS CHOIR @ Carnegie Hall. “The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the oldest boys' choirs in the world. For nearly five hundred years it has been one of the enduring symbols of Austria and Vienna.” (full price ticket)

This annual holiday concert is part of Billi Pod’s holiday tradition for the 7th straight year. He has an excellent seat in the center orchestra, 4th row.

Then for this evening is ...

7:00==>THE ROAD TO MECCA - “Set in South Africa, the reclusive Miss Helen (Rosemary Harris) has become depressed and appears increasingly unable to care for herself. Pastor Marius Byleveld, who embodies the village's conservative values, is determined to get Miss Helen into an old-age home. A young teacher is just as determined that Miss Helen remain free.” (Broadway - complimentary ticket)

This show is in very early previews. Now, in the name of fair and unbiased reporting, I am rather confident that Billi Pod will find the underlying story line to be quite disturbing. Not that he has anything to worry about ... but ... still ... old-age home??? ... someone wants to put someone there ... against their will??? ... yeah ... I know ... not that Billi Pod has anything to worry about ... I mean ... whatever ... anyway ... where was I?

A Friday Night Report From The Big Apple With BREAKING NEWS!!

Thank God last night Billi Pod felt well enough to go to his show ... so his report card on ...

THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, about a recovering critic who turns a helpful family’s life upside down==>A<==incredible performance by Jim Brochu and a stellar cast. Dated? Yes, of course, it is set in 1939, but it is still gut-busting funny.

See it!! It closes on Sunday.

I felt a bit better this morning and did things and stuff and then had an entertainment event for the afternoon, kinda different for a Friday ...

2:00==>NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH - “A well-intentioned neighbourhood watch scheme soon develops into something altogether more sinister ... and hilarious.” Yes ... that is how the Brits spell neighborhood ... with a “u.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

This is playing at the 59th Street Theater Complex and is part of their Brits Off Broadway Series. The playwright is Alan Ayckbourn and it is his 75th play. It has gotten generally good reviews.

Billi Pod’s report card==>B<==at least 15 minutes needs to be cut and I had a bit of a problem at first with the accents, mostly because I was seated pretty far back. At intermission I moved to a front row seat and that helped a lot.

It is worth seeing.

When the show was over I took a subway down to 34th Street to the shopping madness known as Macy’s and The Manhattan Mall. My purpose, you are no doubt breathlessly asking since I had previously reported that my Christmas shopping was done? What?

Well, I needed to purchase a carryon suitcase. What? Yep, that’s right ... a carryon. In the name of fair and biased reporting Billi Pod has to admit that in his entire traveling experience he has never ... ever ... ever ... carried on. He has always checked his luggage.

Why the change at this late date? Easy ... he is pissed off at the $20-25 fee for checking bags and he is tired of the baggage carousel drama, especially on short or connecting flights.

I am happy to report that I did some online research (thank you John Scott Reed for your "good intentions" ... but ... I couldn’t wait any longer for your report) and found a suitcase that had a list price of $80, on sale for $29 ... and with a special $10 discount coupon in today’s paper it was only ... $19.00. Awesome!!

But ... OMFG! It was an absolute madhouse down there. A nightmare.

Got back to PHC around 6:30. Had nothing scheduled and all of the offerings on my services were closed so Billi Pod decided he would stay in for tonight.

Hold on now out there in the hinterlands and vast wilderness known as cyberspace ... remember ... before you rush to judgment ... Billi Pod had already attended one entertainment event for today and ... most importantly ...

When you are retired, like Billi Pod ... every night is a Friday night ... there is nothing special about any night ... so calm down and go back to watching your 42” plasma TVs and eating your Domino’s pizza.

Also ... Billi Pod has to admit that on the way back from the 34th Street madness his nose began to run and he began to cough and sneeze. He just didn’t feel like going out again ... so he thought he would take the opportunity to bring you loyal and faithful readers up-to-date.

Anyway ...

BREAKING NEWS==>I am pleased and extremely relieved to report that grandson CWO Alex Falletta aka Army Guy and his Company are no longer in Iraq. Whew and double Whew and Thank You Higher Power!! Unfortunately, however, they are still overseas and will be until probably May.

The countdown to the date when Billi Pod becomes a great-grandfather is getting closer and closer. The expected delivery date is January 19th and Gina has been a real trooper. I may have some additional good news to share as soon as she gives me permission to post it.

November 2011 Was Another Awesome Entertainment Month for Billi Pod

Billi Pod will start this posting on a foggy and kinda gloomy day in The Big Apple with his entertainment stats for the month of November 2011.

If you loyal and faithful readers will take the time to stay with me during this rather long posting I think you will agree that November was another AWESOME entertainment month for Billi Pod ...

But ... it is up to you ... because ... I report - you decide.

In checking my daily log (log, not diary - real guys don’t keep diaries) I find that during the month of November 2011 Billi Pod attended/saw/did the following:

6 Broadway shows (Godspell; Lysistrata Jones; Seminar; Bonnie & Clyde; Hugh Jackman, Back On Broadway; and, An Evening With Patti Lupone and Mandy Pitinkin); 22 Off Broadway shows; 5 Classical music concerts (3 by the New York Philharmonic); and, 1 movie (Moneyball).

There were 8 entertainment doubleheaders during the month.

Billi Pod had a great dinner with his dear friends David Huddleston and Sarah Koeppe, and their friend Judy Haskell, at Sardi’s, the legendary theater district restaurant.

During the month Billi Pod was extremely fortunate to have several events where he was part of Dian Crystal’s posse, which also includes Vera and Marty. Thank you My Lady.

He was also able to spend some quality time with several of his AA buddies (you know who you are), including a terrific Thanksgiving dinner party.

Unfortunately, during the month there was no face time with --

Worker Bee #1 - whose name rhymes with Peed; or

Worker Bee #2 - whose name rhymes with Beers; or

Worker Bee #3 - whose name rhymes with Cipher.

Billi Pod was out of town for 2 days/nights, down in Florida.

There were 1,613 blog page views and Billi Pod posted 30 times to this blog. This is, of course, in addition to daily postings on FaceBook.

During the month there was only 1, repeat, 1 day/night that Billi Pod stayed in without attending some entertainment event, and this stat alone typifies why Billi Pod loves living in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

So, there you have it ... pretty AWESOME in my humble opinion ... but ... as I said ... it is up to you loyal and faithful readers ... because ...

Today, being a Monday, will be my usual errands and stuff day. It was really nasty looking at 8:00am - foggy and overcast. At 11:30 it has cleared up a bit but it is still hazy.

Now ... Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s THE DOOR, about two men waiting in a room with only each other and a banging door for company==>A-<==extremely well acted with a very provocative story line.

This is part of the Brit’s Off Broadway series at the 59th Street Theatre complex.

It clocks in at 50 minutes and has several plot twists that keep you focused. I had no problem with the accents. See it.

Well, to all of those NFL neigh-sayers==>Timmy Tebow and The Broncos did it again, didn’t they? Yes they did.

Oh, the last time I checked, the final score does not include your “sacred” style-points, does it? No, it doesn’t. What counts is winning ... and ... Timmy is a WINNER. BELIEVE BUTT-HOLES BELIEVE!!

Tonight’s entertainment event is ...

8:00==>RENT - “Rent tells the story of struggling young artists living on the edge and reaching for glory in New York's East Village.” (Off Broadway - discounted TDF ticket)

In 1996 the original Broadway production of Jonathan Larson’s rock musical won the Tony for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Yes, I saw it way back then and loved it so I am really looking forward to seeing this Off-Broadway production which has received generally favorable reviews.
