Billi Pod’s 60th Class Reunion Schedule

Well, my loyal and faithful readers ... the countdown has begun for Billi Pod’s next adventure ... The 60th Reunion of The Summerlin Institute Class of 1952, in Bartow, FL.

My car service will pick me up at 6:45am and we will head out to the Delta Terminal at Laguardia for my 9:45am flight down to Tampa. Yes, it is a bit early but I want to get to the terminal in time to have a light breakfast.

My flight is scheduled to arrive in Tampa at 12:58pm. I will pick up my rental car, hopefully another VW Beetle, and head over to Bartow, where I will be staying at The Holiday Inn Express.

Assuming everything goes as anticipated, in the early evening I will head over to Gina Falletta’s dad’s house in Winter Haven to see my darling great-granddaughter Saylor. I am taking Gina out to dinner and, hopefully, we will be joined by my son Bill III aka The Bill, who lives in Orlando, and my youngest grandson Chris aka Topher. This should be awesome.

Friday, noonish, I will head over to Lakeland to the trendy Fresco's Bakery & Bistro on S. Kentucky Ave. to meet up with Jim Vandewalker and some of our friends.

Then that evening is the first of the reunion events - 6:00pm==>Dinner with classmates at The Peace River County Club. My date for the evening will be Jennie Swearingen Humphrey ... yeah, we dated back in HIgh School.

Saturday - 8:00am==>Classmates only breakfast at Bartow Golf Course.

Then in the evening will be the final event - 6:00pm==>Dinner with classmates at the posh residence of Sonny & Joyce Griffin.

As I have previously posted, the class of 1952 numbered only 72 at our graduation date. I have no clue how many will attend this reunion.

For your information, Summerlin Institute, named after Jacob Summerlin, was founded in 1887. In 1970, when Polk County schools were totally integrated, the name was changed to Bartow Senior High School.

I will head back to The Big Apple on Sunday. My flight leaves Tampa at 2:10pm, arriving at LGA, hopefully, at 4:58pm.

Will use the express bus service from LGA to The Port Authority and I know the ride will be nightmarish with all of the incoming traffic from the weekend. Oh well ... ain’t nothing I can do about it.

So, my loyal and faithful readers, this is what my next several days will be. I will have my trusty, but now aged, iBook with me in addition to my iPhone, of course, so I will be able to keep you up-to-date.

Friday Was A Great Day

Man ... Friday was a terrific day here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World as both parts of Billi Pod’s doubleheader were more than excellent ... but first ... just a bit of mundane stuff ...

Like a report on my two routine doctor’s appointments. The 10:45am one with my dermatologist was about a thingy on my back. He took care of it and it is fine. The second was supposed to be at noon with my cardiologist but I got a call informing me that Dr. Fred wouldn’t be in the office, for personal reasons, so the routine appointment was rescheduled. No big deal.

In fact the cancellation allowed me to catch an AA meeting held in the same area as the York Theatre where my 2:00pm entertainment event, as a part of Dian Crystal’s posse, was scheduled.

So ... that leads to ... THE GIG, a staged reading about 6 nonprofessional musicians who land a two week gig in the Catskills==>totally enjoyable, funny and well performed for a reading. Thank you Dian for including me in your posse.

The house was full with a lot of industry-connected people in attendance. Interestingly, the playwright/composer/lyricist was seated right behind us and we had an opportunity to tell him how much we enjoyed the show.

When the show was over I came back to PHC for my usual fruit and cheese snack and then it was time to head down to Union Square for my second entertainment event. It had begun to rain and it was really nasty, cold and windy.

TRACES, about a group of friends who leave their mark in a run-down warehouse through acrobatics, music, and dance, fusing the traditions of circus with the energy of street performance==>A.

WOW!! This is a terrific show and the performers are utterly fantastic, exhibiting amazing physicality from start to finish.

As I posted yesterday, this show has received very favorable reviews and Billi Pod totally agrees. There were a lot of youngish kids in the audience and they were having a ball.

Folks in the Tri-State area, if you haven’t seen this show ... Billi Pod says==>see it now!!

By the time the show was over the rain had stopped, thank God!!

Interesting thing when I got back to the apartment building ... I was in the elevator with a late 20s/early 30s really nice looking girl, Emily, who I had previously learned is in the cast of Voca People. What is Voca People you are no doubt wondering? Well ... this is what I posted about it back in June 2011 ...

VOCA PEOPLE - “A spaceship from Planet Voca crashes when its fuel, musical energy, runs dry. The Voca People must refuel by performing the music of Earthlings, in a musical theater event that bridges languages, cultures, and planets.”

It had a very successful run at a venue on 43rd Street. Billi Pod gave it a grade of A. It has now transferred to The New World Stages and is building a following in that venue.

I had met Emily earlier in the week and had told her that I was a fan of her show. Last night she told she had mentioned me to her cast members. I should have given her one of my new Billi Pod Blogs business cards but I forgot to. I think I will leave one for her at the desk.

7:30==>MANHATTAN CONCERT PRODUCTIONS: Debut Ensembles @ Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. Will include works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

This is the first of 4 consecutive classical music concerts on my schedule.

Terrific Time With John Scott Reed

Man, I can’t believe it ... it is a beautiful morning in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World==>56º @ 10:30am. Will definitely do some walking around this afternoon.

I am happy to report that yesterday afternoon’s staged reading of LUNCH AT THE PICCADILLY, about the rowdy residents of Rosehaven Convalescent Center, was totally enjoyable.

The reading was part of the York Theatre’s Developmental Reading Series. I hope the show finds a life/producer.

Attended the reading as a member of Dian Crystal’s posse, which included Marty Kosarik, Vera Olichney and moi.

Then for the evening I went over to The East Village to check out John Scott Reed’s (aka Fabson) new pad, located on 10th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues.

He is still in the process of getting settled into his new space, which he shares with a roommate of the opposite sex, but it already has that “Fabson” feeling.

Frankly, with so much going on in his life work-wise (Fashion Week, Sundance Film Festival, Red Carpet etc etc etc) and otherwise, I am amazed he has survived the past 3 weeks.

The apartment has access to an outdoor courtyard and that will be nice come summer. Bottom line==>Billi Pod likes his new pad.

And speaking of likes ... Billi Pod also likes his new ‘hood, which has a young and energetic feeling that was definitely lacking in his former ‘hood in Brooklyn.

When we finished the tour of his new pad we went to a terrific restaurant called Frank, located on 2nd Avenue @ 6th Street. Dinner was super excellent and we were able to do a lot of catching up. He even let me talk a bit about me ... and that was nice.

This is playing at a theater in my ‘hood and is in previews with little advanced buzz.

The upcoming weekend is going to be basically a classical music frenzy, with concerts on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. In fact, I am considering adding another for Friday night ... we will see about that.

So, my loyal and faithful readers ... I really feel the need to get out of PHC and wander ... so ... I will close this posting with yet another thing for you to consider/ponder ...

RIP==>LOYAL MYRA OLIVE HASS

RIP==>LOYAL MYRA OLIVE HASS, age 95, who passed away on Sunday at The Rohr Home in Bartow, FL.

Myra was a life-long resident of Bartow and a close friend to me and Ginger Flowers of Atlanta, Ga. Myra was the owner and operator of The Studio, an art and frame store that served the art community from 1968 until 1997. Most of my art works currently on display in PHC at 420 W. 42nd Street were framed by Myra.

Goodbye Myra - you will be missed. Love, Bill and Ginger.

It is hard to transition to something like entertainment ... but ... I have to ... so ...

Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s CALL ME WALDO, about what happens when an ordinary electrician begins channeling the spirit of Ralph Waldo Emerson==>B.

The funny story line begins to drag a bit by the end of the 95 minute show. Brian Dykstra’s character’s name is: Gus Sakellariadis - I dare you to try to pronounce it ... go ahead, give it a try ... see ... that is what I meant ...

Gus uses the f-word every third word, regardless of who he is talking to and this gets a bit old, too. Despite these quibbles, the show is worth seeing.

Today is yet another doubleheader ...

2:30==>LUNCH AT THE PICCADILLY -“A new musical about changing the world one rocking chair at a time. It follows the rowdy residents of the Rosehaven Convalescence Center as they fight to keep their home in the face of a corporate takeover.” (Off Broadway - free ticket).

Billi Pod is seeing this show as a part of Dian Crystal’s posse. Unfortunately he will be unable to join the posse for what he anticipates will be another eggplant pizza frenzy because he has something else planned for the evening ... which is ...

8:00==>meet up with John Scott Reed aka Fabson at his new pad in The East Village.

As you loyal and faithful readers will recall, about a month ago Fabson finally owned-up to his earlier poor decision-making and left the wilderness known as Brooklyn to return to where he belongs ... The Isle of Manhattan.

The Bloomberg mandated quarantine period is now over so it is safe for me to finally have some face-time with him.

His new residence is on 10th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues in a very “happening” area of The East Village. After he gives me a tour of his new pad we will catch a bite somewhere in his new ‘hood. Nice!!

Report Cards On Saturday’s Doubleheader

Good morning everyone.

I hope everyone’s weekend is going well out there in the hinterlands and boondocks.

It is bright and cold in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World==>35º @ 8:30am.

Yesterday’s entertainment doubleheader was just as different and diverse as Billi Pod had anticipated. Both shows were in his immediate ‘hood

Before the first show I met up with my theater-buddy Dian Crystal and her posse, which this time only consisted of Vera Olichney. As it turned out, our seats for the show were together and that was nice.

CQ/CX, about an up and coming reporter at The New York Times whose dreams of becoming a famous journalist come crashing down when he becomes the center of a plagiarism scandal==>A.

This show is based on the Jayson Blair “scandal” that rocked The Gray Lady in 2003. I found the story line to be intriguing as well as thought-provoking, with its rapid-fire dialogue and insider feeling. The acting is excellent and the set design terrific.

Our seats were in the front row, which I usually hate, but this time the location made us feel as if we were part of the on-stage action.

In doing a bit of background research for this posting I was somewhat surprised at the number of negative reviews, mainly focusing on how undeveloped the main character is. Well, all I can say is that Billi Pod, a fair and unbiased reporter, does not share those views ... so ...

When the show was over Dian and her posse, which now included Billi Pod, went to a pizza place known as Claudio Pizzeria, at the corner of 43rd Street and 10th Avenue.

Billi Pod was cajoled (when was the last time you saw that word?), or perhaps even forced, into trying a slice of eggplant pizza. As many of you know, when you are a part of Dian’s posse it is virtually impossible not to obey her commands/wishes/demands/desires.

Billi Pod tried to convince her that real men don't eat eggplant in any form but she was having none of that argument. Bottom line ... Billi Pod ordered a slice and ate all of it. In the name of fair and unbiased reporting he has to acknowledge to you loyal and faithful readers that it wasn’t as barf-inducing as he had anticipated/expected.

When we finished Dian and her posse went on a walk around the ‘hood and I came back to PHC. When they finished their walk they came up to the 41st floor and joined me in PHC, where we chilled until it was time for our second show, which was ...

8:00==>THE LADY FROM DUBUQUE by Edward Albee, a drama about the arrival of an unexpected guest and her mysterious companion giving the question ‘Who are you?’ new and desperate meaning==>B.

Lots of yelling and shouting and unbelievable interaction between characters who are supposed to be friends. For me the show was saved by the appearance of Jane Alexander in the last moments of Act 1.

Act II is much more compelling as the audience tries to answer the question “who are they?” about the unexpected guests. For Billi Pod it was a typical Edward Albee play in that it both involved him and also pissed him off at the same time.

Dian’s posse gave it a C and a C-, while our theater buddy Daniel Nickle gave it an A.

I was a bit surprised to discover in my posting preparation research that the show originally opened on Broadway in 1980 and ran for only 12 performances. I believe the critics this time are going to be more favorable in their reviews. We will see.

When I got back to PHC I felt really good about the day’s events and the interactions I had with friends etc etc etc. Yes ... it was a good doubleheader, all things (meaning eggplant) considered.

Today is ... tada ... yet another entertainment doubleheader for Billi Pod ...

3:00==>BAD KID - “Is the story of a Goth boy who dreamed of being anywhere but the middle of Texas in 1991. Preferably somewhere in London wearing fishnet gloves and a cape while standing alone in the rain. In this funny and moving examination of rebellion, sexuality and friendship, David Crabb reflects on what it means to grow up different and alone, just like everyone else. (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

The show is playing down in the Village. When the show is over I will come back to my ‘hood to be present at an AA meeting to be chaired by one of my buddies who is celebrating his AA birthday. YES!!

Then for the evening is ...

8:00==>ONE MAN LORD OF THE RINGS - “One Man (Charles Ross) recreates the enchanting world of Middle-earth with nothing more than elbow pads and his imagination, playing numerous characters and re-enacting key scenes from the film trilogy.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket).

This one hour show had a very well received run in New Jersey and I am looking forward to it.

Good morning everyone.

I am happy to report that my return visit last night to THE INEXPLICABLE REDEMPTION OF AGENT G was even more fun than the first time, on Wednesday.

Folks ... hurry up ... you gotta see this show ... trust Billi Pod on this ... you gotta see this show before its run ends on March 4th. Yes, I know that I am sounding a bit like a shill, but you loyal and faithful readers know that isn’t the case ... so ... see this show ...

Today is going to be yet another potentially awesome doubleheader for Billi Pod in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. Both shows are in my ‘hood. The first event is ...

This is based on a true story. The show has gotten generally favorable reviews and I am looking forward to it.

8:00==>THE LADY FROM DUBUQUE by Edward Albee - “At a late night party, the hosts are entertaining their friends with a round of Twenty Questions and another round of drinks. When an unexpected guest and her mysterious companion arrive, the question ‘Who are you?’ gains a whole new and desperate meaning.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

This show is playing at the new Signature Theater space. I haven’t found much advance buzz so I really don’t know what to expect, except that it is an Edward Albee play, whose works usually entertain me and piss me off at the same time. We will see ...

So, I hope you loyal and faithful readers will agree that today sounds very interesting. Will, of course, report in detail tomorrow.

I am extremely happy to report that the deal between The Bronx Bombers and The Pirates has been finalized and AJ Burnett aka Loser Boi is history (bad history at that). The deal is subject to approval by MLB and Loser Boi passing a routine physical. Neither is expected to be a problem.

Tuesday’s Report On RENT And Josh Grisetti

It was 34º and kinda hazy at 8:00am in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. It is now 2:00pm and it has warmed up a bit to 45º and I just got back from doing the last of my errands, the weekly restocking trip to my grocery store, Food Emporium, located just a 1/2 block away from my building.

Why didn’t I do it yesterday, you are no doubt breathlessly asking, since Monday is Billi Pod’s usual errands and stuff day? Well ... its pretty simple ... on Tuesday Food Emporium gives a 5% discount to senior citizens over the age of 65. This is in addition to any other savings and/or discounts. Over a year’s time that 5% saving adds up to a lot of Off Broadway shows and other tickets on my ticket services ... so now you know ...

And speaking of food ... yes ... we were speaking of food ... I am happy to report that a new Gourmet Deli has just opened on 42nd Street, about a 1/2 block from my building. It is called Well Green Market and it is just the kind of place that Billi Pod cherishes because it offers a cooked-food bar and a salad bar, both at $6.99 per pound. It also offers breakfast, stir-fry, panini’s, gourmet sandwiches, hot wraps, prepared salads, custom made salads, fresh fruit and a well-stocked grocery section.

It is manned by a very nice and courteous staff of Koreans who seem very anxious to please. The lack of such an establishment has been the major quibble Billi Pod has had with his current apartment location. Now that has been taken care of ... nice ...

Last night was able to use my exchange ticket for RENT, the revival of Jonathan Larson’s award winning 1996 musical playing at the Off Broadway theater complex New World Stages. My FaceBook friend Josh Grisetti is now in the mostly new cast, in the lead role of Mark.

As you loyal and faithful readers will recall, about two weeks ago I had purchased a TDF ticket to see Josh but when I got to the theater I learned he was out of the performance due to flu. Much to my surprise the box office staff gave me the necessary information to get an exchange ticket through Telecharge and that is what came down yesterday.

When I saw the show back in December, before Josh joined the cast, I gave it a B+. Well, this time it earns an==>A.

It was a terrific performance from Josh and the basically new cast. Totally enjoyed it. The ensemble cast is excellent, especially MJ Rodriquez as Angel.

The house was about 80% full with a mostly 20s-30s highly enthusiastic audience. The sound problem I mentioned in my first posting has been corrected.

As I said earlier, this show is definitely worth seeing. I think Josh will be in the cast until at least May.

Tonight’s entertainment event is ...

7:15==>POETIC LICENSE - “A biting drama set against the cutthroat, ‘publish or perish’ world of academia, exploring how one person's past can shape his art, his family and, in this case, his future.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket).

This show is in early previews, so no advanced buzz. It is playing at the 59th Street Theatre Complex, which is, as you know, one of my favorite venues.

Billi Pod Reports on Monday

It was 41º @ 7:30am in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. Bright and cold.

Yes ... a beautiful but cold morning for The Big Blue parade through "The Canyon of Heroes" which began at @ 11:00am downtown, ending up at City Hall Plaza.

Yes ... Billi Pod has been watching the event unfold from the cozy and warm confines of PHC. The relatively nice weather has brought out record crowds of die-hard Giants fans and, at the moment ... Eli Manning is King Of The World ... at least here in Gotham City.

Can you believe this ... we haven’t even finished the award ceremony and already the “pundits” are talking about the odds for and against The Giants making it back to Super Bowl XLVII. Come on guys ... why don’t you just give us the opportunity to live in the moment ... OK?

Anyway ... for your enlightenment out there in the boondocks and hinterlands, the early morning odds to win the 2013 Super Bowl are:

As you loyal and faithful readers know ... last night’s scheduled entertainment event was THE MOST HAPPY FELLA @ 8:00pm at the NYU Skirball Center in The Village. Was really looking forward to this show.

I guess it was around 7:00pm when I left PHC and headed over to The Port Authority Bus Terminal to catch a train down to The Village. It is only a 4 stop trip and I made great time. As usual, I played a bit of solitaire on my iPhone.

Leisurely walked from the subway station to the venue and I estimate it was around 7:30 when I got there. It was a bit chilly but tolerable.

Decided I would go on inside the venue even though it was a bit earlier than I usually do ... so ... I took out my iPhone to check my messages and emails and ... then ...

OMFG!! The iPhone was 100% dead. OMFG!! I had recharged it before leaving the apartment, as I always do. Punched buttons and even shook it ... nothing ... OMFG!! It was dead. I had my recharger-battery system with me, so I took it out of my backpack and plugged it in, hoping that perhaps it would jump-start the iPhone back into operation.

Nothing!! Nada!! Zilch!! OMFG!!

Now I knew I had a serious problem. The issue was ... do I simply ignore it and go on inside for my event and then try to “fix” it when I get back to PHC after the 2+ hour show ... or ... do I run down to The Apple Store further downtown in SoHo, at Prince and Broome, and see if they can fix it for me?

Damn ... I really wanted to see this show ... but I also knew that if I went inside I would have extreme difficulty focusing on the show because of my concern over the status of my iPhone.

Now ... I have to say to you loyal and faithful readers ... to those of you who don’t have iPhones ... I know you can’t understand why I was so bent-out-of-shape ... but ... those of you in the iPhone Universe truly understand and identify with my conundrum.

Well ... Billi Pod headed south to SoHo at a brisk pace. Then ... OMFG!! When I got down to The Apple Store location I learned for the first time that it was closed for renovation. Man ... why was Billi Pod being punished like this? OMFG!!

Then ... I noticed the sign that said there was a temporary location about 2 blocks further south ... so off I went.

Found the temporary location and went up to a nice young man wearing all of the usual Apple gear and explained my problem to him ... or rather ... my iPhone’s problem. When he told me that all of the technicians were booked until 3:00am my heart virtually stopped pumping ... but ...

He said ... “I’m not a technician, of course ... but let me see your phone for a minute.” I gave it to him and he did a procedure which he called a “butt-kick” which involved holding down two buttons ... and ... presto ... the Apple logo lit up and the phone was alive again ...

We talked briefly about what it would entail to get a new phone immediately and I decided that I wouldn’t do it just then ... but ... trust me ... a new phone is just around the corner.

I thanked him profusely and left the store ... it was 8:15 and I had missed my show. Damn!!

I wasn’t in a mood to head back to the apartment, so I walked over to the Spring Street subway station and caught a train back to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and went to one of the mega-plex movie theaters and got a $9.50 senior ticket to see the recently released movie CHRONICLE.

CHRONICLE is about “three teenage boys who accidentally gain superpowers, with one of them becoming a destructive megalomaniac.”

Had about a 30 minute wait until the previews began so I spent the time playing solitaire on my now operational iPhone. (It is still functional as I write this posting)

The show has received generally good reviews and I enjoyed it a lot and have no problem recommending it to you loyal and faithful readers.

So ... that was yesterday’s entertainment event ... finally ...

Today’s entertainment event is ...

7:30==>THE CONFUSIONS OF YOUNG TORLESS - “In an elite late 19th century Austrian military school four adolescent boys become enmeshed in a dangerous rite of passage.” (Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket).

Yes ... I know ... sounds like a bit of a downer doesn’t it? But, it is playing at The Looking Glass Theater on West 57th Street and I usually like the stuff they do there ... so we will see ...

Ending on a sad note ... my longtime friend and fraternity brother Joe Heyck of Tampa, FL, died on February 2nd. He was 76.

Joe and I go way way back to the University of Florida where we were both, at the same time, members of: Kappa Alpha Order; Florida Blue Key; and the University of Florida Hall of Fame.

Joe had a long and distinguished career with the Tampa-based law firm of Allen, Dell, Frank, and Trinkle. He is survived by: his wife of 47 years, Marilyn; two children; and 4 grandchildren.
