RIP==>LOYAL MYRA OLIVE HASS

RIP==>LOYAL MYRA OLIVE HASS, age 95, who passed away on Sunday at The Rohr Home in Bartow, FL.

Myra was a life-long resident of Bartow and a close friend to me and Ginger Flowers of Atlanta, Ga. Myra was the owner and operator of The Studio, an art and frame store that served the art community from 1968 until 1997. Most of my art works currently on display in PHC at 420 W. 42nd Street were framed by Myra.

Goodbye Myra - you will be missed. Love, Bill and Ginger.

It is hard to transition to something like entertainment ... but ... I have to ... so ...

Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s CALL ME WALDO, about what happens when an ordinary electrician begins channeling the spirit of Ralph Waldo Emerson==>B.

The funny story line begins to drag a bit by the end of the 95 minute show. Brian Dykstra’s character’s name is: Gus Sakellariadis - I dare you to try to pronounce it ... go ahead, give it a try ... see ... that is what I meant ...

Gus uses the f-word every third word, regardless of who he is talking to and this gets a bit old, too. Despite these quibbles, the show is worth seeing.

Today is yet another doubleheader ...

2:30==>LUNCH AT THE PICCADILLY -“A new musical about changing the world one rocking chair at a time. It follows the rowdy residents of the Rosehaven Convalescence Center as they fight to keep their home in the face of a corporate takeover.” (Off Broadway - free ticket).

This is part of the York Theatre’s Developmental Reading Series. These shows are usually well performed, for a reading.

Billi Pod is seeing this show as a part of Dian Crystal’s posse. Unfortunately he will be unable to join the posse for what he anticipates will be another eggplant pizza frenzy because he has something else planned for the evening ... which is ...

8:00==>meet up with John Scott Reed aka Fabson at his new pad in The East Village.

As you loyal and faithful readers will recall, about a month ago Fabson finally owned-up to his earlier poor decision-making and left the wilderness known as Brooklyn to return to where he belongs ... The Isle of Manhattan.

The Bloomberg mandated quarantine period is now over so it is safe for me to finally have some face-time with him.

His new residence is on 10th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues in a very “happening” area of The East Village. After he gives me a tour of his new pad we will catch a bite somewhere in his new ‘hood. Nice!!

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

Billi Pod Reports on Monday

It was 41ยบ @ 7:30am in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. Bright and cold.

Yes ... a beautiful but cold morning for The Big Blue parade through "The Canyon of Heroes" which began at @ 11:00am downtown, ending up at City Hall Plaza.

Yes ... Billi Pod has been watching the event unfold from the cozy and warm confines of PHC. The relatively nice weather has brought out record crowds of die-hard Giants fans and, at the moment ... Eli Manning is King Of The World ... at least here in Gotham City.

Can you believe this ... we haven’t even finished the award ceremony and already the “pundits” are talking about the odds for and against The Giants making it back to Super Bowl XLVII. Come on guys ... why don’t you just give us the opportunity to live in the moment ... OK?

Anyway ... for your enlightenment out there in the boondocks and hinterlands, the early morning odds to win the 2013 Super Bowl are:

Green Bay Packers - 5-1

New Orleans Saints - 6-1

New England Patriots - 7-1

New York Giants - 10-1

and ... way down the list

New York Jets - 20-1

and ... at the bottom of the list ... tada ...

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 150-1

Moving on ...

As you loyal and faithful readers know ... last night’s scheduled entertainment event was THE MOST HAPPY FELLA @ 8:00pm at the NYU Skirball Center in The Village. Was really looking forward to this show.

I guess it was around 7:00pm when I left PHC and headed over to The Port Authority Bus Terminal to catch a train down to The Village. It is only a 4 stop trip and I made great time. As usual, I played a bit of solitaire on my iPhone.

Leisurely walked from the subway station to the venue and I estimate it was around 7:30 when I got there. It was a bit chilly but tolerable.

Decided I would go on inside the venue even though it was a bit earlier than I usually do ... so ... I took out my iPhone to check my messages and emails and ... then ...

OMFG!! The iPhone was 100% dead. OMFG!! I had recharged it before leaving the apartment, as I always do. Punched buttons and even shook it ... nothing ... OMFG!! It was dead. I had my recharger-battery system with me, so I took it out of my backpack and plugged it in, hoping that perhaps it would jump-start the iPhone back into operation.

Nothing!! Nada!! Zilch!! OMFG!!

Now I knew I had a serious problem. The issue was ... do I simply ignore it and go on inside for my event and then try to “fix” it when I get back to PHC after the 2+ hour show ... or ... do I run down to The Apple Store further downtown in SoHo, at Prince and Broome, and see if they can fix it for me?

Damn ... I really wanted to see this show ... but I also knew that if I went inside I would have extreme difficulty focusing on the show because of my concern over the status of my iPhone.

Now ... I have to say to you loyal and faithful readers ... to those of you who don’t have iPhones ... I know you can’t understand why I was so bent-out-of-shape ... but ... those of you in the iPhone Universe truly understand and identify with my conundrum.

Well ... Billi Pod headed south to SoHo at a brisk pace. Then ... OMFG!! When I got down to The Apple Store location I learned for the first time that it was closed for renovation. Man ... why was Billi Pod being punished like this? OMFG!!

Then ... I noticed the sign that said there was a temporary location about 2 blocks further south ... so off I went.

Found the temporary location and went up to a nice young man wearing all of the usual Apple gear and explained my problem to him ... or rather ... my iPhone’s problem. When he told me that all of the technicians were booked until 3:00am my heart virtually stopped pumping ... but ...

He said ... “I’m not a technician, of course ... but let me see your phone for a minute.” I gave it to him and he did a procedure which he called a “butt-kick” which involved holding down two buttons ... and ... presto ... the Apple logo lit up and the phone was alive again ...

We talked briefly about what it would entail to get a new phone immediately and I decided that I wouldn’t do it just then ... but ... trust me ... a new phone is just around the corner.

I thanked him profusely and left the store ... it was 8:15 and I had missed my show. Damn!!

I wasn’t in a mood to head back to the apartment, so I walked over to the Spring Street subway station and caught a train back to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and went to one of the mega-plex movie theaters and got a $9.50 senior ticket to see the recently released movie CHRONICLE.

CHRONICLE is about “three teenage boys who accidentally gain superpowers, with one of them becoming a destructive megalomaniac.”

Had about a 30 minute wait until the previews began so I spent the time playing solitaire on my now operational iPhone. (It is still functional as I write this posting)

The show has received generally good reviews and I enjoyed it a lot and have no problem recommending it to you loyal and faithful readers.

So ... that was yesterday’s entertainment event ... finally ...

Today’s entertainment event is ...

7:30==>THE CONFUSIONS OF YOUNG TORLESS - “In an elite late 19th century Austrian military school four adolescent boys become enmeshed in a dangerous rite of passage.” (Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket).

Yes ... I know ... sounds like a bit of a downer doesn’t it? But, it is playing at The Looking Glass Theater on West 57th Street and I usually like the stuff they do there ... so we will see ...

Ending on a sad note ... my longtime friend and fraternity brother Joe Heyck of Tampa, FL, died on February 2nd. He was 76.

Joe and I go way way back to the University of Florida where we were both, at the same time, members of: Kappa Alpha Order; Florida Blue Key; and the University of Florida Hall of Fame.

Joe had a long and distinguished career with the Tampa-based law firm of Allen, Dell, Frank, and Trinkle. He is survived by: his wife of 47 years, Marilyn; two children; and 4 grandchildren.

Seeya later Alligator!!

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

Monday==>A Day With Friends

Yesterday was a day of being with longtime friends.

I first went to Bartow Memorial Hospital to see Jack Davis and I am happy to report that he appeared to be in a lot better condition. It is, however, still extremely doubtful whether he will ever completely recover enough to be released from the hospital. Dammit!!

Then I drove over to Lakeland and had lunch with my former law partner Buddy Campbell. We had a lot of catching up to do and it was a nice time together.

For the evening was dinner with friends at a house located in the Lakeland Highlands. I had asked the hosts, whose names I cannot remember at the moment, to have name tags for all of the guests ... but they didn’t honor my request ... but Billi Pod was resourceful and made notes on a napkin as the guests where introduced to him. It is, however, extremely difficult to make notes when someone is kissing the back of your right hand ... but I tried ... so ...

I know you loyal and faithful readers are interested in who was on the very restricted guest list ... so here goes (from Billi Pod’s notes, of course) ...

Rick & Jam Fudzina

Naggie & Tim Manditalker

Ron & Merry Crossed

Rue Gently

Marilyn Bulmer

Kim Prickland

Rob Jung

Me - Billi Pod

When the dinner was over Billi Pod gave the guests permission to leave and then he came back to The Holiday Inn Express in Bartow, FL, in Polk F**king County aka PFC, to watch the last half of the BAMA/LSU BCS Championship game.

As you loyal and faithful readers know==>Bama kicked butt as their defense totally shut down the Tiger’s offense. Good because Billi Pod hates Tigers.

This morning I drove over to Winter Haven to have a final goodbye with Gina, Alex and Saylor. I still can hardly believe that I am a Great-granddaddy and that this darling little girl is ours. AWESOME!!

It was also nice to finally have some one-on-one face time with Army Guy. He will be heading back to Kuwait on the 19th. He gave me an awesome present which I will photograph and post about when I get back to The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

I am, obviously, at the gate at Tampa International waiting for my 6:15pm flight. I will post this and then do some crosswords or something ... later ...

GO GINA! G0 ALEX!! GO SAYLOR!!

Monday’s Doubleheader Was Excellent

Had a great time yesterday @ Angus McIndoe, my favorite Theatre District restaurant, with Dian Crystal (on the left) and Vera Olichney (on the right).

Dian finally got around to redeeming my 2011 birthday gift.

Not only did we have a great meal but we also had a lot of fun talking about our respective theater obsession(s) and how much we loved living in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. Dian was born and raised in The Lower Eastside and Vera has lived here for at least 25+ years.

When dinner was over we split ... they had tickets for ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER and I was scheduled to attend a staged reading of THROUGH THE DOOR.

THROUGH THE DOOR was produced by my FaceBook friend Kenny Howard and directed by my FaceBook friend (and now NYC resident) David Lee. It was a very entertaining event and the cast was excellent, headed by Kerry Butler.

Nice job guys. Hope the show is able to move on to the next level.

Today is yet another entertainment doubleheader for Billi Pod ...

3:30==>A TOMATO CAN’T GROW IN THE BRONX - “A dysfunctional blue-collar Jewish family is languishing under the thumb of a patriarch, who employs emotional tyranny over his fragile middle-aged daughter to keep everyone in line.” (Off Broadway - free ticket)

This is another staged reading and in the stellar cast is ... tada ... Brooke Shields, currently starring in the soon-to-close THE ADDAMS FAMILY.

Then for this evening is ...

7:00==>SISTER ACT - “Disco diva Deloris Van Cartier has dreams of hitting the big time. But when she walks in on a ‘hit’ of a different kind, the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look - a convent.” (Broadway - discounted TDF ticket).

While this Broadway musical received only so-so reviews from the critics, every one of my theater buddies who have seen the show have uniformly loved it, so I am going in with a very open mind. I hear that it is basically==>just fun<==and Billi Pod is just fine with that.

Tomorrow is going to be another event filled day starting with a 2 hour dentist ordeal and then a brief finger-prick session with my cardiologist and then a matinee performance of the well-reviewed Broadway show STICK FLY and then, for the evening, a new comedy in previews called CLOSE UP SPACE, starring David Hyde Pierce of Fraiser fame.

Somewhere in that schedule I am hoping to work in Paul Hughes of Lakeland, who is in town on a pre-Christmas theater-binge.

I have to admit that my mental countdown to heading down to Columbia has begun and I am beginning to get into the ... “why can’t I just teleport myself there?” mode.

Getting there from NYC ain’t the easiest of tasks because the number of nonstop flights is now down to only one each way and this holiday season Delta almost doubled the fare. Bastards!!

No way was Billi Pod going to play their “game” so through his trusted Travel Agent Blanche Bryant he booked other options, saving at least $300+, all on US Air. Yes, he has layovers but so what ...

Briefly ... I will leave LGA on Thursday @ 1:30pm and arrive in Columbia, via Philadelphia, @ 5:48pm.

On the return trip I will leave Columbia on Christmas afternoon ... OK ... OK ... now calm down ... calm down ... Dr. John has to work on Christmas day and overnight ... so we are doing everything on Christmas Eve ... anyway ... leaving Columbia at 2:23pm and arriving at LGA, via Charlotte, at 8:07pm.

On the return flight there is, maybe, the possibility of scheduling an earlier flight, once I arrive in Charlotte. We will see ...

Well, my loyal and faithful readers, I hope each and everyone is becoming filled with the Holiday Spirit ... so ...

Oh ... what a positive feedback on yesterday’s “Condom on the Sleeve” posting - thanks everyone.

It Was Great Being With John Scott Reed Last Night

Good morning everyone out there in the hinterlands.

It is bright and cold in The Big Apple, The Greatest City in The World==>36ยบ @ 8:30am.

Had a great dinner last night with John Scott Reed @ Southern Hospitality, a restaurant in da ‘hood. The food was excellent and there was plenty of it, too.

I had a pulled-chicken platter (yummy) and Scott had fried chicken.

We did a lot of catching up. Scott has tons of stuff going on in his life right now and that is putting it mildly. And ...

On Friday he leaves The Big Apple to begin an awesome two week family-based holiday adventure that will take him to ...

Birmingham, AL;

Muscle Shoals, AL;

New Smyrna Beach, FL; and then ... gasp ...

Deer Creek, TX.

For your information==>Deer Creek, TX, is in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

Wow!!

All Billi Pod can say is==>May The Force Be With You, Fabson!!

Did most of my errands yesterday, including some Christmas stuff, too. How ‘bout dat!!

Have a dentist appointment at 5:00pm (yes, that is the correct time) this afternoon for basically some repair and cosmetic stuff. God, I can already feel my anxiety level beginning to rise ...

Anyway ... assuming everything goes OK with my dentist, then for this evening is ...

7:30==>NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA @ Avery Fisher Hall - “Handel’s ‘Messiah’ performed with the Westminster Symphonic Chorus.” (subscription series).

This is, of course, a holiday tradition for Billi Pod.

Speaking of “holiday traditions” - just got the Happy Holiday card from the building staff, a kinda gentle “reminder” of the upcoming holidays ... hint ... hint ... hint. In this 41 story high-rise apartment building we have ...

Superintendent - 1

Concierge/Doormen - 7

Porters - 4

Handyman - 1

Part-Time - 2

That’s a total of 15 staff-members. In NYC the “expected” range for annual gratuities is $50-$100, so do the math.

Yeah, I know, but it is one of the expectations for living in a full-service building like 420 W. 42nd Street.

Thanksgiving Dinner Was Great!!

Happy Black Friday to everyone out there in the hinterlands and vast wasteland known as cyberspace.

Yes, I know that there are a lot of bargains offered today at stores everywhere ... but ... folks ... isn’t it sick to spend the night in front of a BestBuy or WalMart or KMart to make it inside when they open at 6:00am, or whenever?

Yes it is, especially when many of the same bargains will be offered online on Cyber Monday.

Billi Pod has many vices, but ... Thank God==>shopping ain’t one of them.

Anyway ...

Had a great time yesterday with my AA buds and their families at an awesome Thanksgiving Dinner hosted in a very posh Upper Westside apartment.

Holidays are often very difficult times for people in recovery, even those of us who are blessed with long-term sobriety. We had a great time sharing our experience, strength and hope in a non-stressfull fellowship environment, bolstered by an ton of excellent food.

As I wrote yesterday, everyone had previously agreed to be cell-phone-less for the whole time ... and ... we were ...

Yep, Billi Pod was disconnected for almost 4 hours and he survived.

It was a bit after 5:00pm when I got back to PHC. Had thought about seeing a movie, but instead I just settled in to watch football and that was OK. The Texas/Texas A&M game was very interesting and exciting to watch.

Billi Pod’s entertainment event for tonight is ...

8:00==>THE BLUE FLOWER - “This musical, spanning two continents and half a century, explores the romantic and tumultuous relationships between four young friends – three artists and a scientist – as they create a world of art, revolution and passion amidst the turbulence and destruction of the World Wars.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

This show was received very mixed reviews, more often than not falling into the “love-it" or "hate-it” category.

I have avoided seeing it but when one of my theater buddies, whose judgment I trust, said it was worth seeing I decided to give it a shot. I think that it closes on Sunday.

The countdown to the GATORS/HALF ASS U game on Saturday has begun and, as I have posted several times, Billi Pod has a very bad feeling in his gut about this game.

On Saturday I am having an early dinner with my dear friends David Huddleston and his wife Sarah Koeppe at Sardi’s, so I will probably miss the first quarter of the game. I will, however, come back to PHC and witness the rest of what could be an ass-whipping.

Oh, and on the topic of football ... please explain to me how Urban Meyer, who was too fragile to remain the head coach of The Gators, is now, less than a year away from his “medical” retirement, on the brink of signing-on to coach at Ohio State, a program that has a bucket-load of problems, to put it mildly?

WTF Urban==>we have a coach who resigns because of his health, returns because he has discovered balance in his life, then resigns because of his health. Now, he has rediscovered his health/balance and wants to sign with Ohio State?

WTF Urban==>this fails the smell test big time.

Anyway ...

GO GATORS!!

Billi Pod Says==>HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EACH AND EVERYONE!!

It is a beautiful fall day in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World==>bright and sunny and 38ยบ at 8:30am.

As I write this posting The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is underway and ... no ... I didn’t even consider going outside to watch it - been there, done that. In fact, Billi Pod isn’t even watching it on the tube, he is listening to one of his favorite oldies radio stations doing a countdown of No. 1 songs from A to Z.

After I post this I will get all cleaned up and head out to the Upper Westside, 72nd Street to be precise, for Thanksgiving Dinner with some of my AA buddies. This is the 3rd consecutive year we have been together for this festive event.

We have a kinda unique tradition. What, you are no doubt breathlessly asking? Well ... here it is ... by agreement, when you arrive you must turn off your cell phone - not turn it to vibrate, but TURN IT OFF - and place it in a drawer, that is then locked and remains locked until we all get ready to leave. There is no running out to check for messages etc. Nothing. Total disconnect.

As might be expected this is harder on some than on others, but since it is a condition of being in the “group” it is somewhat easier to deal with.

This means that Billi Pod will be unreachable from approximately 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

At this moment I am not sure what, if anything, I will do for the evening. May try to catch a movie, or just come on back to PHC and watch football. Time will tell, as “they” say ...

Billi Pod’s report cards on yesterday’s doubleheader ...

HUGH JACKMAN: BACK ON BROADWAY==>A++

Folks I don’t want to sound too gushy but this is one of the best shows E V E R!! Jackman is an amazing performer and his interaction with the audience in unbelievable.

He ended Act 1 with Billy Bigelow’s Soliloquy from Carousel and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, and I am not being overly dramatic, it was that powerful.

Sooooooo glad I saw him. The house was sold out, with standing room.

Now, in the name of fair and unbiased reporting Billi Pod must report to you loyal and faithful readers about the females in the audience ... well ... please don’t hate me for reporting this ... but ...

Hugh Jackman is to post-menopausal women what Justin Bieber is to tweens.

Jus sayin’ ...

Moving on ... then for the evening ...

STANDING ON CEREMONY: The Gay Marriage Plays==>B+

Funny, well-performed and thought-provoking. The house appeared to be sold out. See it.

Let me close out this posting with a THANK YOU to grandson Alex Falletta aka Army Guy and all of his brothers and sisters in arms stationed with him “over there” who are putting themselves in harms way on a daily basis in order to protect and maintain our way of life and to keep American strong.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!

Gil - The Bill - Four Days - So Much Happened

Hello to all of my loyal and faithful readers out there in the vast hinterlands and buried in the morass known as cyberspace.

I know that you have been asking yourselves ... “selves, where the f**k is Billi Pod ... why the f**k hasn’t he timely posted on his blog site?” WTF is going on?

Well, there has been a lot going on in my life since the last posting back on Friday and once you read through this way-too-long posting I think you will understand. Also, Billi Pod does have to say that if you were a FaceBook friend you would know what has been happening ... but, since most of you aren’t on FaceBook ... well ... so ... anyway ..

Let’s start this with a summary-style update, beginning on Friday, October 29th ...

Friday - as previously posted I met up with John Scott Reed at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Dumbo, Brooklyn, for the The Tiger Lillies and Justin Vivian Bond performance.

Scott just barely made it into his seat before the show began. Man, in the name of fair and unbiased reporting, Billi Pod must report that Justin Vivian Bond’s opening act was worse than awful. It was mind-blowingly bad and way too long. Scott and I exchanged looks, rolling our eyes ... what have we done?

When Bond finally finished and the stage was being set for The Tiger Lillies (also with Bond) to begin Scott and I agreed that we just couldn’t stomach any more so we fled the scene as fast as we could.

Scott found us a nice restaurant in the ‘hood and we had a great meal and catching-up time.

When I got back to PHC I finished packing, set the alarm for 5:30am for my 7:15am car service pickup, and crashed.

Saturday - the car service pickup was right as scheduled and we made excellent time out to LGA. I checked in at AirTran, cleared security and was at the gate in plenty of time to have some coffee and something sweet.

Wow - was able to get an exit row seat and that was great. The plane was a Boeing 717 and it was full. We left on time. This wasn’t a direct flight. We had a stop at Newport News, Virginia (where????), but didn’t have to change planes. (I had scheduled this rather than a direct flight in order to save over $200 roundtrip)

It was extremely turbulent on the flight and the Captain kept the seat belt light on for the entire time.

When we landed at Newport News, on time, I remember thinking ... “Why is there a stop here with a full-sized jet? Who would be going here?” Well, the answer is ... about 85% of the passengers left the plane. WOW, thought I ... that is really surprising ... now we will have plenty of leg room for the rest of the flight.

Wrong ... new passengers soon started streaming in and every seat was taken - it was actually oversold. Thankfully the weather had cleared up and the rest of the flight was uneventful. We arrived in Orlando only 15 minutes late.

Then, it ... gasp ... appeared that The Norris Travel Curse had been lurking, waiting to kick in upon my arrival ... what happened? Well, for whatever reason it took almost 30 minutes for the first bag to appear at the baggage carousel. Yes, I had checked my duffle, as I usually do because ... Billi Pod does not own a small carryon ... so everything I would need was in the duffle ... clothes, suit, meds ... everything.

The bags started appearing, again very slowly, about 4 items at a time. WTF!! It was taking forever. Then the carousel stopped ... WTF!! There was about 10 of us remaining ... and ... nothing happened ... OMFG!! And, of course, no employees were to be seen. After 20 minutes, I timed it, the carousel started up again and out came some more bags. Thankfully ... my duffle was the next to last bag. The whole process took an hour.

Not a good omen, thought I. Well, there was nothing I could do about it, so I found my car rental station, got my small compact car and headed out of the airport to find Bill III's aka The Bill new house.

Of course, as usual, I made a wrong turn leaving the airport, but no problem, it was easily corrected. And, I am happy to report that I had no problems finding his new house, which is actually in the same general area as his previous house.

I was at his pad in time to watch the final 3 quarters of the GATORS/BULLDOGS game. Man, what a major disappointment. Since so much time has passed I think it will serve little purpose to dwell on the puke-inducing season the Gators are having.

Man, it is soooooooo hard to find anything positive to say about what is happening. We are going to be lucky to finish the season at 6-6.

What about bringing back Ron Zook?

Anyway ... after the game it was time to head out for dinner. We had made plans to have dinner with two of Bill’s golfing buddies, Renzy (a retired fire chief and former next-door neighbor) and Kenny (a computer engineer). We picked them up and made our 7:30pm reservation at Outback. I love Outback, especially their Blooming Onions.

Dinner was great and it helped me get back into a better mood ... so thank you Renzy & Kenny.

Was very very tired when we got back to the house. I wanted to leave in the morning in plenty of time to allow me to swing by Gil and Linda’s place before the services, scheduled to begin at 2:00pm.

Sunday - I think it was around 7:00am when I got up. Thank God the weather was OK. Had some coffee, repacked, and was ready to head out around 9:00am.

Had no trouble finding my way from Bill’s pad to The Turnpike, which later turns into I-75. The traffic was OK and I didn’t swerve in front of any busses carrying day-tripping children or force any other vehicles off the road etc etc (at least that I know of).

Got to Gil & Linda’s around 11:00am. I am so happy to report that Linda was and is doing fine. Yes, as you loyal and faithful readers who know her know ... she is one tough lady and very emotionally stable. A few family members and friends were also there and we had a nice opportunity to visit and to remember our Gil.

About 1:00pm the family headed over to the location of the service, which was at the Baughman Center on Museum Road on the U of Florida campus.

It is a beautiful location and the weather was great. The small chapel seats about 90 people and it was full of friends and family members. I was the first of three who shared thoughts and remembrances about Gilbert. I ended mine by looking upward and saying ... “Thank You Gilbert for being my friend” ... and then while looking at Linda ... “Thank You Gilbert and Linda for letting me be your friend.”

Yes, it was a very emotional time. Per Gil’s request, via Linda, the service was a bit less than 30 minutes. When it was over everyone in attendance was invited back to the house for a bite and more opportunity to talk about Gil’s life and its impact on each one of us. In many ways I felt more emotionally touched by this than for the formal service itself.

I have to say that Gil's son, Bruce, was a steading force during the entire time, helping Linda with things and stuff and being a positive model for everyone.

I had previously planned to overnight in Gainesville with my friends Chuck and Ramona Chance, so we left Linda’s place around 4:00 and headed to The Chance Chalet north of Gainesville.

We had a great time catching up and talking about lots of things and stuff. Chuck cooked a turkey and made some awesome dressing. We had dinner outside in one of their gardens. It was really nice and it let me unwind, physically and emotionally.

My plans for the return trip to NYC was to get up in time to leave their place around 9:00am for the drive down to The Orlando Airport. I would turn in my rental car and have time to chill before my 2:00pm AirTran flight back to New York City, The Greatest City In The World.

I crashed earlier than usual. I was tired and drained.

Then ... the second phase began ...

Monday - around 2:00am my cellphone beeped. It woke me up. But I didn’t check it. I woke again around 5:30am to the sound of rain pouring down. I checked the cell ... and ... the 2:00am beep was a text message from Bill ... and ... Holy F**k ... it said that he had checked into the emergency room at Winter Park Hospital at 9:00pm with what he thought were symptoms that he was having a heart attack and that they would probably keep him there for another day or two. OMFG!!

I got up and immediately began packing. I knew I had to head down to Orlando. At this time it was pouring rain.

Chuck and Ramona got up and saw me off. It was 7:00am. I knew that there was no way I could leave on my afternoon flight, no way.

I have to say that the drive was extremely difficult because of the heavy rain and the number of huge semi’s that were on the Interstate. I really had to work at staying focused on just getting there rather than what had happened to Bill.

It was around 9:00am when I was in the Orlando area. Found a place to park and called my trusted Travel Agent, Blanche Bryant, and told her of the situation and asked her to book me on the same flight for Wednesday afternoon and to extend my rental car. Of course, I knew I would stay as long as Bill needed me ... I immediately found myself in the initial phases for “The Hovering Nun” modality.

It was still raining. Finally found the hospital and was in Bill’s room around 10:00am. Now, my loyal and faithful readers, I could probably write at least 50 pages about this experience but I won’t, other than to say it was one of the longest and slowest and most boring times of my life ... not joking. The clock virtually stopped moving.

After his admission they had done numerous heart related tests on Bill and, thank you God, the results indicate that his problems were not heart-related, he was not having a heart attack. Whew. This info came from a Cardio/whatever who had treated him before. He was also seen by two other doctors, one a Gastro/whatever and the other a Neuro/whatever and they confirmed that his chest problems were not heart-related.

The difficult part ... all of this took way way too long and we got entangled in a bit of a dispute over whether he could be released Monday night or had to spend the night. It was mostly a paperwork problem in getting the final discharge papers processed.

Finally he was officially released around 9:00pm. We picked up a pizza and were back at his house around 10:00pm. Both of us were emotionally and physically drained, and that is putting it mildly. We scarfed down the pizza and both crashed a bit later.

The bottom line is that the problems are believed to be related to nerve damage in his back as a result of his numerous back surgeries. What happens is that the tightness triggers a brain response that he is going into cardiac arrest, with all of the negative results ... this causes panic etc, as well it should.

Man, when I went to bed I was as tired and as emotionally drained as I have ever been. I am so glad I was here. Had I been in NYC and gotten the message I would have caught the first flight down, of that we were both absolutely certain.

Now ...

Tuesday - Bill, of course, took the day off from work. He feels OK. We both slept in.

Today has been a day of just chilling and talking about what happened. He has new meds and followup appointments. We have no problems with The Hovering Nun heading back North.

Tonight we are having dinner with grandson Chris Falletta aka Topher and his girlfriend Ashley. We will probably go back to Outback and that is more than fine with Billi Pod.

Tomorrow, Wednesday - Bill will go back to work and I will chill until my 2:00pm flight back to The City.

I had shows scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday but was able to give my tickets to some of my theater buddies, including Dian Crystal.

So, my loyal and faithful readers, with much more detail than you wanted, you are now basically up-to-date ... so ...

GO GATORS!!
