Academia Nuts & Honor Bound==>EXCELLENT!!

Friday==>It is a very pleasant Friday here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

At 1:30pm it is 84º with blue skies, puffy clouds and a nice breeze coming off The Hudson River.

I am happy to report to all of you loyal and faithful readers and followers that yesterday was an excellent entertainment doubleheader for your favorite blogger ... so ... let’s get started with Billi Pod’s report cards ... starting with ...

The New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF) production of ...

ACADEMIA NUTS, in the National High School Quizbowl Championship the McCutter family takes on the Walla Walla Walruses==>Thumbs Up. (remember, I usually don’t give specific letter grades to festival performances)

There is a lot to like in this self-described “nerd-rock musical,” with a stellar cast of young performers and seasoned veterans. Alyse Alan Louis is outstanding in the role of Maggie, the dreamy-eyed brainiac hoping to escape from her quirky family and dominant mother. Her “family” is also laden with secrets.

The house was full and the audience was really into the show, which is a lot of fun if you like in-your-face humor. The final number, “I Speak Geek,” pretty much sums it up.

Yeah, it’s worth seeing.

It is playing at The Signature Theatre Complex on West 42nd Street, has a running time of 1:50, with intermission, and the remaining performance dates are: Friday, July 11 at 9:00pm; Saturday, July 12 at 5:00pm; and, Sunday, July 13 at 8:00pm.

When the show was over I came back to PHC for the usual snack, a fruit and cheese plate, and then it was time for the Off Broadway show ...

HONOR BOUND, an ambitious young reporter/intern tries to uncover secrets about a respected, retired doctor but instead discovers long-buried conflicts between two old friends==>A-

There is also a lot of like in this drama about trust, friendship and honor and the impact that inept prying and rumor mongering can have on the lives of others.

I don’t want to go into more specific details because this would spoil the dramatic appeal of the show that has several totally unexpected plot twists. I guess you could say: “Sometimes, nothing is as it seems to be.”

The 5-person cast is excellent and young actress, Nicole Carroll, as the intern/reporter, holds her own in her Off Broadway debut.

The multiple sets and scene changes are handled effortlessly and projections are very important.

Billi Pod says==>see this show.

This well-reviewed drama is playing at St. Luke’s Theatre on West 46th Street, has a running time of 2:00, with intermission, and the remaining performance dates are Friday’s only through September 26th.

When the show was over I walked back to the apartment while listening to the YANKEES/CLEVELAND game.

It was then that I learned that our ace, Masahiro Tanaka, had been diagnosed with a partial UCL tear in his pitching elbow and will be out for a least 6 weeks for rehab. If the rehab doesn’t work he will then have Tommy John surgery to repair the torn ligament.

This terrible news was only enhanced when during the game our bullpen totally imploded, giving up a 3-run lead into the 7th inning and The Yankees ultimately lost 9-3 in a game we should have won. We split the series 2-2.

Tonight @ 7:05pm, in Baltimore, is the first game of a 3-game series against the Division-leading Orioles.

On the mound for The Yankees (46-45) will be Hiroki Kuroda (6-6) vs. Miguel Gonzalez (4-5) for The Orioles (50-41)

Folks==>things are very very grim in The Yankee Universe.

Moving on ...

Tonight’s entertainment event for your favorite blogger is an Off Broadway show in his Hell’s Kitchen ‘hood ...

8:00==>LONE STAR/LAUNDRY and BOURBON - “Two hilarious one act plays about life in the Lone Star State. Enjoy performances about redneck misbehavior as these husbands and wives shoot the breeze and thank God that they didn’t grow up in Oklahoma.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)

This show opened on Thursday night, is playing at The Theatre Row Complex on my West 42nd Street block, has a running time of 2:15, with intermission, and runs through August 26th.

Hummmmm ... not sure I am in the mood for redneck humor ... butt ... we will just have to keep our fingers crossed.

I definitely feel in the mood for a major walk and wander session in the Upper Westside ... so ...

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE!!

Yesterday’s Pedometer mileage==>3.61 miles (or, 7,897 steps)
