Tuesday==>it is a gray, overcast and rainy day here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, but at least it is a bit warmer - 50ยบ @ 11:00am. It is supposed to rain off-and-on for the rest of the day and into the evening.
So ... let’s begin this posting with my thoughts/observations on last night’s staged reading, part of the Manhattan Theatre Club’s 7@7 Series ...
ODYSSEY ROOM, about three estranged friends who meet at their condemned middle school on the day before its demolition==>interesting.
As most of you loyal and faithful readers and followers know, Billi Pod usually doesn’t give letter grades to staged readings of new works-in-progress, because they are what the name implies ... works-in-progress in the developmental phase. The exception comes if the work is so bad that it is puke-inducing and beyond redemption.
There was a lot to like about this work. There was a stellar cast, which included Joyce Van Patten, portraying characters who each had hidden secrets and flaws.
The running time was 90 minutes, which was, IMHO, about 15 minutes too long.
I was at the reading as a guest of Dian Crystal aka My Lady. We had seats in the front row, per her choice.
When the show was over we walked over to our favorite Ethiopian restaurant, Meske, on West 47th Street, in my Hell’s Kitchen ‘hood.
We had our usual meal ... The Vegetarian Combo, which includes: split lentils with curry, split lentils with berbere sauce, chickpeas, cabbage, potatoes, collard greens, and other stuff. It was AWESOME!!
So ... My Lady ==>it was great being with you!!
Today’s entertainment event is ...
7:00==>HOWLING HILDA - “A musical about the Brooklyn Dodgers’ greatest fan, who was notorious for her clanging cowbells, frying pan and iron ladle.” (Off Broadway - free ticket)
This is part of the York Theatre’s Developmental Reading Series.
Moving on to some local news ...
As those of you loyal and faithful readers and followers who live in The Tri-State area know ... today was scheduled to begin the controversial ban on large sugary drinks, a rule imposed/sponsored by Mayor Nanny aka Mike Bloomberg.
The rule would have banned sales of sugary sodas larger than 16 ounces by restaurants, movie theaters, pushcarts, mom-and-pop grocery stores and sports arenas.
Well, yesterday a state trial judge declared the rule to be unconstitutional, resulting in some very funny headlines ...
“Judge nixes soda ban, tells Mike ... SUCK IT!” - front page of the Daily News
“POUR IT ON! Judge cans nanny’s ban on sweet big sodas.” - front page of the NY Post
“COURT HALTS BAN ON LARGE SODAS IN NEW YORK CITY. Limits Called ‘Arbitrary’ by State Judge Were to Begin Today.” - front page of the NY Times.
Of course, Mayor Nanny has vowed that he will appeal the decision.
So ... to quote Cindy Adams==>Only in New York, kids, only in New York.
On that happy note ...
Yesterday’s Pedometer mileage==>3.11 miles (or, 6,795 steps)
Total mileage since 7/1/12==>1,228.82 miles
GO GATORS AND GO YANKEES!!
