It Has Been A Difficult 24 Hours For Billi Pod.

In the name of fair and unbiased reporting, Billi Pod has to admit to you loyal and faithful readers out there in the vast hinterlands that he has had difficulties in processing the implications of his beloved University of Florida, Home of The Fighting Gators and The Swamp, being named The 10th Douchiest University in America. WTF!!

Yes, he was barely able to sleep last night after posting the results of the GQ article. He fitfully dreamed that he had been punked. Then, that this was all somehow a result of his decision to leave The State of Florida to become a resident of The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

OMFG!! Was Billi Pod to blame???==>WTF!!

This morning he shared his grief and concerns with some other Gator alums residing in The City and they uniformly assured Bill Pod that he wasn’t responsible ... that what is ... is ... that he had to move on with his life and remain true to his obligation to the vast unwashed masses out there in cyberspace to bring meaning and pleasure to their/your otherwise drab and boring lives by sharing his lifestyle experiences in Gotham City.

So ... taking a deep breath ... Billi Pod will attempt to move on ... with ...

Yesterday’s SAMUEL FRENCH SHORT PLAY FESTIVAL was again excellent and each of the 4 plays was different. The house was again full and the audience very much into the event. It was a very enjoyable hour.

Tonight Billi Pod has scheduled two sessions of the FESTIVAL. The first is at 6:30 and the shows are ...

Assisted Living - “A tense visitation occurs in an assisted living facility as an old man lies confined to a hospital bed.” Running Time: 25 minutes [Dammit -- stop your snickering and snide thoughts, or Billi Pod will come out there and whip some ass]

Blood Grass - “When a strange young man with a knife in his gut appears in Mary’s garden on a cool autumn night, she is forced to confront her past.” Running Time: 14 Minutes

Pluck & Tenacity - “One member of an aspiring rap duo decides to go rogue in order to write love songs.” Running Time: 14 minutes

Then at 8:00 the shows are:

Honey Mushroom - “The Honey Mushroom fungus and the General Sherman sequoia are unlikely penpals in a budding romance.” Running Time: 11 minutes.

The Painter - “After ten years, two cousins reunite to end a haunting promise.” Running Time: 30 minutes

Grapple - “A re-working of the story of Rapunzel, Grapple is a dark comedy about a young girl coming of age.” Running Time: 25 minutes.

Billi Pod has a $9.00 TDF to each session.

WTF==>The 10th Douchiest University???<==WTF!!

Anyway ... last night The Yankees got a stellar performance from Freddy Garcia and the bullpen and beat The Rays 4-0, assisted by some redemptive batting and defense from Curtis Granderson.

What do I mean by “redemptive batting and defense?” Well, Granderson was pretty much responsible for the loss on Tuesday, due to his multiple defensive miscues. Last night in the top of the first inning he hit a 2 run homer to give The Yanks a lead they never relinquished. He later made a tremendous defensive play on a towering drive hit by Evan Longoria. He caught it and then crashed into the centerfield wall. Way to go Grandy!!

The final game of the series is tonight with our ace CC Sabathia on the mound going for his 15th win.

WTF==>The 10th Douchiest University???<==WTF!!

Stop it Billi Pod ... just stop it ... it ain’t your fault ... get over it!!

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

Breaking News==>University of Florida Ranked 10th Douchiest College in America

You know my loyal and faithful readers, being a fair and unbiased reporter is sometimes an extremely difficult burden, especially when it requires bringing attention to matters which reflect adversely on things or institutions that Billi Pod really cares about.

What am I talking about you are no doubt breathlessly asking out there in the hinterlands?

Well ... here it is ... my internet research has just revealed that the well-regarded magazine GQ has just published a list of The 10 Douchiest Colleges in America, based on a groundbreaking new book called “The Rogers & Littleton Guide to America’s Douchiest Colleges,” and ... gasp ... and double gasp ... Billi Pod’s alma mater, The University of Florida ranks number 10.

Yes ... I know ... I know ... take a deep breath all of you Gators out there ... the rankings are ...

1. Cornell

2. Penn State

3. Yale

4. Stanford

5. Pepperdine

6. Brigham Young

7. Bennington College

8. University of Delaware

9. MIT

10. University of Florida

The website:

http://www.gq.com/entertainment/humor/201108/douchiest-colleges-america-2011

contains their analysis of the respective schools and I feel it is my duty as a fair and unbiased reporter to post here what they said about The University of Florida ... this is it in its entirety, unedited:

**********************

"10. University of Florida

Douchiest College, Sunburned Tits Conference

Home of: The "Tim Tebow" douche.

Douchey Affectations: Baggy cutoff camo shorts; pristine all-white Nike Air Force 1's with ankle socks poking out just so; Tim Tebow jersey only partly concealing the rip tattoo for your homey on the upper biceps; sun-kissed hair, waxed chest; pierced tongue, or at least eyebrow.

Claim to Fame: It has a journalism school that's not awful.

Overheard in Line at the Gator Corner: "Think I'm gonna skip class and post up by the pool and bronze out, dude. You in?"

Typical Gator Growl Itinerary: Smoke a bunch of schwaggy weed and crank the hip-hop and Godsmack on your way to the Swamp. Get so drunk on grain punch that you pass out on the grass, somewhere between Dane Cook's act and the Steve Miller Band. Have to be carried back to some stranger's dorm room, where you wake up to cheers from the goateed strangers who brought you home and cracked eggs in your hair and drew cocks and balls on your forehead with dry-erase markers. Watch the fourth quarter.

In Ten Years Will Be: Professional football player; professional basketball player; some rich farmer's chosen politician, propping up land values on dying orange groves with center-right state legislation. Or managing a string of Chipotles.

Douchey Alums: Joe Scarborough, Steve Spurrier, Camilo Villegas, Erin Andrews, Gatorade."

***********************

Of course Billi Pod is stunned at this revelation and evaluation and he hopes you will take the time to visit the website and read what is said about the other 9 universities.

Now, please please please do not flame me. I didn’t make this up. Billi Pod is merely reporting. His investigation is continuing, however, since he has been "advised" that the managing editor of GQ is alleged to be a graduate of Florida State University.

Billi Pod is now going to bed to suck his thumb and reflect on whether he can continue with his responsibilities as a fair and unbiased reporter, but until then ...

I report - you decide.

Yankees Choked Last Night! More French Festival Info.

Dammit-to-Hell==>The Yankees blew the Tampa Bay game last night in the bottom of the 7th.

They were leading 2-1 when Granderson lost a routine fly ball, then Boone Logan made an error on a potential inning-ending double-play grounder, and then Granderson made an errant throw on a sacrifice fly, allowing what turned out to be the winning run to score. The final was 3-2.

Bartolo Colon pitched a decent game but got the loss. Bottom line, the Yanks had dead bats, sloppy defense and lost a game they should have won. Barf!!

Game 3 is tonight. Luckily the FuckSox also lost, so their lead over the Yankees remains at 1.5 games.

Oh well ... on to other things ...

Last night’s SAMUEL FRENCH SHORT PLAY FESTIVAL was excellent. Very good acting and 3 interesting plays. The house was full with a very supportive and enthusiastic audience.

Tonight @ 6:30 is more of the same, this time with 4 short plays --

The Body Washer - “A young woman is killed at a military checkpoint. Her death is seen through three sets of eyes: the body washer who prepares her remains for burial; the National Guard soldier who fired the fatal shot; and, a journalist.” Running Time: 12 minutes

The Burglar - “Andrew and Alex live a happy, normal life in the big city…until the darker side of the big city comes bursting through their door.” Running Time: 25 minutes.

Mr. Crossover - “When Little Mikey (aka Mr. Crossover), a young, arrogant streetball player tries to hustle his way into an elite gym, he runs into Joe, an older, wiser friend and learns it takes more than skills on the court to really crossover.” Running Time: 10 minutes.

Girls Play - “Two teenaged girls confront hidden feelings during a role-play having to do with their much older teacher.” Running Time: 10 minutes.

(Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket).

These sound very interesting, don’t they?

Wow, it is really humid. It is only 83º at 11:00am and I have the windows open and the fan on. I usually don’t turn on the AC until it reaches 90º or until I break into a sweat, whichever occurs first. Being on the 41st floor helps a lot because of the breezes coming off the Hudson River, the same breezes that make Winter so nasty.

One thing for certain, this ain’t “walk and wander” weather. It is predicted that the temperature will reach 100º on Friday.

Happy Birthday to Donna Jadamec & Stuff

Good morning to everyone!!

A big HAPPY BIRTHDAY shout-out to my niece Donna Jadamec who lives in Denver, CO.

She is celebrating the big FOUR-FOUR. Man, does time fly.

Lots of hugs and kisses to you, your adorable Josie and your Mom. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Love ya lots - Uncle Bill

Man, it is another hot, humid and muggy day in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s TALES FROM THE FAUCET: An Evening With Glen Berger==>WTF<== meaning, Weird Though Funny. Not a leak by any means.

There was a very talented ensemble cast and the stories were ... well ... different ... but still interesting and mostly funny. Not like that piece of dreck I saw on Saturday called THE LEAK. The house was full and very into the show.

After the show Billi Pod came back to PHC to watch the rest of the Yankees/Tampa Bay game. AJ Burnett aka Loser Boi sucked yet again, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He also issued 6 walks.

The Yankees came back to win it 5-4 in the 9th inning when The Rays pitcher walked in a run with the bases loaded. Mo closed it out for the Yanks, needing only 8 pitches.

Tonight Bartolo Colon tries to redeem himself from his last two lackluster performances.

Billi Pod’s entertainment event for tonight is ...

8:00==>SAMUEL FRENCH SHORT-PLAY FESTIVAL. The plays are:

Chum Li - "Two boys who should be at a comic-con convention are instead in an STD clinic. A shocking admission leads to an epic battle.” Running time: 10 minutes.

Queen Elizabeth of Factory Fifteen - “Is about a woman in a factory during World War II. The men are now returning from the war. What will happen?” Running time: 30 minutes.

Bubble & Squeak - “It really will not be good if there are cabbages in Delores’ pants.” Running time: 25 minutes.

(Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket)

Yeah ... yeah ... I know ... but they sound like the kinda stuff that Billi Pod likes ... so ... we will see.

Billi Pod Says==>Back To Work You Worker Bees & Check Out My Schedule

Well, it is a Monday and it is time for all of my Worker Bee friends, loyal and faithful readers and unwashed masses out there in the vast hinterlands of the good ole U S of A to head back-to-work so that those of us in the retirement community may maintain our immensely interesting lifestyles, funded by your hours and hours of mindless nothingness and drudgery in the workforce.

You do, however, have permission to take off the time required to read and absorb the details of this and all of Billi Pod's postings.

Thank You! And keep up the good work. Forego your vacation-time, pay your taxes on time and work until you are carried out of the office in a pine box. Thank You Worker Bees!! Thank You!!

Now on to important things ... like ...

Billi Pod’s report card of yesterday’s SPATTER PATTERN: or How I Got Away with It==>A<==excellent acting.

Terrific staging and engrossing story line that took unexpected twists and turns. See it if you can.

The show is playing down in Chelsea. When it was over I walked the street fair on 8th Avenue up to 23rd Street and then back to PHC while listening to the last of the Yankees/Blue Jays game.

The Yankees won 7-2 behind 6 decent innings from Phil Hughes. We begin a 4-game series tonight @ Tampa Bay.

Billi Pod stayed in last night and watched the FuckSox/Rays game which began at 8:00pm on ESPN.

What a game!! It went into extra innings with the score tied at 0-0. It went on and on and on. The FuckSox finally won 1-0 in 16 innings and the game was over at 1:54am. Wow!!

Today will be Billi Pod’s usual errands and things and stuff day and then tonight’s entertainment event is ...

8:00==>TALES FROM THE FAUCET: An Evening With Glen Berger - “Performed with an ensemble cast, including members of Broadway’s SPIDER-MAN TURN OFF THE DARK.” (Off Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket).

The press blurb for the show says that Berger co-wrote the book for SPIDER-MAN but it doesn’t say which version. Anyway, it sounds like an interesting event. We will see ...

This is Billi Pod’s totally terrific entertainment schedule for the remainder of the month of July ...

Mon - 8:00==>Tales From The Faucet

Billi Pod Says==>Beware of THE LEAK!

This going to be a rather brief posting on this hot and humid Sunday afternoon. I have no excuse for the lateness of this missive ... just a small case of sloth, I guess ... my bad ...

So ... let’s start with Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s THE LEAK by Tony Drazan==>90+ minutes of my life totally, and I mean, totally, wasted.

The writer/performer, Tony Drazan, has had a successful career, thus far, as a Hollywood writer/director. But, folks that doesn’t automatically mean you can also act. I just gotta say it - his performance was incredibly bad, not even up to the expectations of a High School acting class.

Yes, I know ... harsh ... but I have to maintain my fair and unbiased reporting responsibilities to you loyal and faithful readers out there in cyberspace.

The stories he was attempting to "tell" were inane, disconnected and about people I could care less about. Yes, I knew it was reported to be a workshop, but, folks ... bad is bad ...

When it was mercifully finally over I felt as if he had taken a leak on me. So ... be warned.

The positive aspect of yesterday was the outstanding game pitched by our ace CC Sabathia against The Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees won 4-1 and are looking for a good outing this afternoon from Phil Hughes in his second start since coming off the DL.

Billi Pod’s entertainment event for Sunday is ...

1:00==>SPATTER PATTERN: or How I Got Away with It - “A screenwriter becomes entangled in the life of a university professor under investigation for a grisly murder. What begins as self-interest soon gives way to empathy, and a bond between men from seemingly opposite worlds inexorably deepens.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket).

This is playing downtown in Chelsea at The Atlantic Theater Company Stage 2 and I have a feeling that it will probably fall into Billi Pod’s “love it or hate it” category. We will see ...

The upcoming week is already booked solid with multiple entertainment events, in fact, from Monday until the end of the month there are only 3 days/nights that are currently open. And, as you loyal and faithful readers know, they will shortly be filled.

This is why Billi Pod loves living in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY @ Yankee Stadium.

Yesterday was an awesome day, one of the very best Billi Pod has had during his years in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World==>Sir Paul McCartney @ Yankee Stadium!!

John Scott Reed aka Fabson came over to PHC after he had gotten off work, a rather interesting workday for him since he some face-to-face interaction with Bradley Cooper ("The Hangover Part 2"). We did some catching up and then headed over to Shake Shack at 44th and 8th Avenue where Scott treated me to an awesome dinner featuring more food and calories than I would normally ingest in a week.

We got to the stadium a bit early because I didn’t want to run the risk of being late and missing any part of the concert. Our seats were excellent. There would be no opening act.

Sir Paul McCartney came on stage at 8:30pm and the sellout crowd went wild. He looked great. It is hard to believe that he turned 69 last month. The concert started with “Hello Goodbye.”

My loyal and faithful readers, Billi Pod has to admit that it was a surreal experience to witness this rock & roll legend and hear the songs that virtually everyone in the stadium knew the complete lyrics to.

To add to the almost mystical atmosphere, at about 9:00pm the full moon became visible, rising majestically over the stage. OMFG!!

Sir Paul had a nice ongoing banter directed at his adoring audience. Early on he took a good-natured poke at Derek Jeter when he said:

“And by the way - who is this Derek Jeter guy? Somebody said he’s got more hits than me.”

The crowd roared.

Near the end of the concert, during “Live and Let Die,” fireworks spewed from the stage, burying Sir Paul in a billowing cloud of smoke.

During the entire concert the sound was awesome and Sir Paul was in excellent voice, easily reaching the falsetto notes that brought back memories of the screaming masses of the 60s.

The regular program concluded with “Hey Jude.” There had been no intermission. Sir Paul returned to the stage for two encores. It was 11:00pm when he made his final goodbye wave and, frankly, Scott and I were emotionally drained, to put it mildly.

Leaving the stadium and getting to the subway station was quite a feat unto itself. It was after midnight when I got back to PHC. I spent the next 2 hours processing and absorbing what can only be classified as a Once In A Lifetime Experience.

I am so lucky to be where I am!!!

Tonight’s entertainment event is ...

8:00==>THE LEAK by Tony Drazan - “It is told in free associative bop style by the performer, leaking his own hilarious and haunting memories, taboo fantasies and secrets both real and imagined. (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket).

This is playing at Ars Nova, one of my favorite venues.

Oh, I guess I should comment on The Yankees==>they sucked again losing 7-1 to the Blue Jays, for two straight losses. Hopefully this afternoon our ace CC Sabathia will plug the wound and stem the flow of blood.

You know, John Scott Reed aka Fabson had quite a day==>Bradley Cooper, Billi Pod, and then Sir Paul McCartney. Not bad, not bad at all.

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

“Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.”

William S. “Moon” Mullon (1927-1998)

Thirteen years ago today one of my dearest friends, Bill Mullon, of Anna Maria, Florida, died.

I have gotten permission from his wife, Sandy, to re-post this email that I sent to friends and family thirteen years ago after I had returned to NYC following Bill’s memorial service. This is it in its entirety, unedited --

************

"Hello everyone:

I was first introduced to William S. "Moon" Mullon in 1973 by Capt. Frank Cavandish, the owner of the Rod & Reel Pier, which is located diagonally across the street from the house I once owned in Anna Maria. Bill and I became friends and this friendship spanned 2 1/2 decades. Bill had just moved from Cocoa Beach where he had been employed with Boeing and then Tropicana. He had been a member of the City Commission there and a political activist in the Democratic Party.

In the ensuing years as a resident of Anna Maria Island Bill's career path took him from Tropicana to Manatee County government, where he was the County Purchasing Agent, back to Tropicana where he retired about 6 years ago as a Certified Purchasing Manager. He remained politically active in the local Democratic Party. I think the phrase "Yellow Dog Democrat" was coined with him in mind.

In 1976 I was asked to preside over the wedding ceremony uniting Bill and Sandy Gilmore. Sandy is a career upper-level manager/executive with HRS. Their vows were jointly written by Bill, Sandy, and Bill's eldest son, Bill, Jr., aka "Buns."

The ceremony took place at daybreak in the surf adjacent to the City Pier in Anna Maria. Honestly, I doubt anyone in attendance expected that union to last more than a couple of years, if that.

We were wrong - man, were we wrong. Sandy and Bill had a unique relationship, in that not only were they husband and wife, but also, they were truly best friends. They were a house divided on one issue, however. Bill was a Gator and Sandy a 'Nole.

Bill and Sandy lived in a series of places on the Island, each of which they named "The Digs," and finally settled in and purchased "Digs IV" in Holmes Beach. They were famous on the Island for their open hospitality with many many parties commemorated by special T-shirts designed by Sandy. Sandy is an accomplished artist.

I sold my Anna Maria house in 1991, however, shortly thereafter Bill and Sandy made the back bedroom in Digs IV available to me and I would guess that in the ensuing years, whenever I was in Florida, I would spend 3 out of 4 weekends with them. It was my home away from home away from home, it was my refuge. They became my best friends, my extended family, Bill the older brother I never had.

When the phone call came at 12:30am on Sunday morning, July 19th, that Bill had died, I called the airlines and was on a flight down to Anna Maria at 8:55am the same morning. I got there in the early afternoon. Nancy Rhodes, one of Sandy’s oldest and dearest friends was already there.

Family and friends quickly gathered in support of Sandy and Bill's children by a previous marriage, Bill, Jr., Patrick, and Lynn, and their children. Moon was the consummate planner, so I was not surprised to learn that he had planned to the last detail how he wanted things handled when he passed away, I mean, he had scripted his wedding, why not his final memorial services as well? And that he did, down to naming the song to begin the services - "We Have Just Begun" by the Carpenters - and "Margaritaville," by Jimmy Buffett to end the services, which MUST conclude in one hour, max!!!!

The service was held in the Chapel of an Island funeral home on Tuesday evening, July 21st. The chapel was filled with photos and objects covering all aspects of Bill's life, including almost a dozen photo albums recording the social activities of 22 years of Digs Parties.

The standing room crowd included local Islanders, executives from Tropicana, county officials, a local Judge, and just plain folks, all joined to remember, to cry, and especially to laugh. I was honored to have been asked to preside. In addition to me, others who shared their life experiences with Moon, were: his sister Ann; his children Bill, Jr. and Lynn; Bradenton attorney Donald Hadsock; and, Island resident Fred Adkins. As I said, Moon had directed (or perhaps ordered is the operative word) that the service last no longer than one hour, so, at the end of the hour, as the sounds of "Margaritaville" filled the Chapel, we all stood and sang along with Jimmy Buffett ......

When the song ended, I concluded the evening by saying ....

SO LONG MOON - WE WILL SEEYA LATER!!

Bill"

************

Yes, it has been thirteen years but in many respects it feels like it all happened yesterday and I still miss him as if it were yesterday.

He will never be forgotten by his family and friends. There is a void in our hearts and on Anna Maria Island that will never be filled.

Billi Pod Warns==>Don’t Piss Off The Theater Gods On High!!

OK, folks ... be warned ... this is going to get graphic.

Yesterday evening, as I was heading down to the Village to pick up my ticket for my 7:30pm show, NO CHILD... at the Barrow Street Theater, the thought hit me ... you know, I would really rather be watching the YANKEES/BLUE JAYS game ... so, Billi Pod pulled a theater-phile no-no ...

What, you are no doubt breathlessly asking? Well ... my loyal and faithful readers ... here goes ... I picked up my ticket, which was only so-so, and then headed back to PHC to watch the game.

I was back at PHC in time for the first pitch and the Yankees went down 1,2,3. The Blue Jays came to bat and ... well ... obviously Billi Pod had pissed-off The Theater Gods On High because what ensued was a disaster beyond description. The Jays scored 8 ... yes ... gasp ... 8 runs in the bottom of the first inning, aided and abetted by loathsome pitching from Bartolo Colon and minor-league defensive play from Eduardo Nunez, filling in for the injured A-Rod.

OFMG! It was one of the worst beginnings to a Yankee game that I have ever witnessed, not joking ... the worst. The Jays scored another run in the bottom of the 2nd, meaning they were leading 9-0 after only two innings. 9-0! Unbelievable!

OMFG!! Could it get any worse? Actually, yes it did. I won’t bore you with the puke-inducing details other than to say that the Wankies, after clawing back to close the gap to 9-7, ended up losing 16-7, the score of a defensive football game.

So ... to the Theater Gods On High ... Billi Pod begs for forgiveness ... he won’t ever do this again ... he swears on the ticket-stub he has from Jeter’s 3,000th hit game ... never ever again. He swears ... never ever again!!!

The evening was saved for Billi Pod when he met up with Gordon and Carole Warner of Tavares, FL, for an after-theater dinner at Joe Allen on Restaurant Row. They had seen THE BOOK OF MORMON and loved it.

As I posted yesterday, they are returning from a wonderful river cruise in Eastern Europe. We had a very nice time.

Well, my loyal and faithful readers, Billi Pod is actually just killing time until tonight’s awesome event ... the PAUL MCCARTNEY sold-out concert at Yankee Stadium, The House That Greed and Ego Built. I will meet up with John Scott Reed after he gets off work. We will catch a bite at Shake Shack on 8th Avenue and then head out to the stadium.

I am certain that security will be mega-tight so will take that into account in our plans. It will be perfect weather for a stadium concert.

So ... the contrite Billi Pod says ...

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!
