Friday==>Yeah ... it is finally TGIF for all of my Worker Bee friends out there in the morass known as cyberspace.
Your favorite blogger here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, hopes that each and everyone of you guys/gals has a great weekend, when it comes time for you to leave your cubicles, wait-stations, broom closets, whatevers. Just remember ... you can’t leave early because your bosses are watching your every move on the recently installed state-of-the-art surveillance equipment.
So ... let’s just move on to Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s Off Broadway show ...
THE ASPHALT CHRISTMAS, set in 1950 NYC, it is the story of St. Celestine's convent school's annual Christmas pageant, a “possessed” teenager, her long-lost mother, a singing priest with a past, and a couple of nuns who must deal with the devil within their convent school walls==>A
Yes, this is just the type of profane in-your-face humor that your favorite blogger loves and the show does one thing extremely well ... it gives the audience a rip-roarin’ fun evening.
The story line is very convoluted as it provides dozens of references to chestnuts from a bygone era: singers and songs; movies; iconic names; Broadway tunes; and, Hollywood trademarks.
The cast is outstanding, highlighted by: Chris Kateff as Father O’Day; Meg Mark as the devil-possessed Veda; and, David Zwiers as Sister Bernadette, the dominating Mother Superior.
The light and sound design are reminiscent of late night horror movies, aided by the cast’s on-the-spot comedic timing.
Now ... in the name of fair and unbiased reporting ... I have to acknowledge that this isn’t the show for everyone ... but ... if you are in the mood to have a good time ... then ...
Billi Pod says==>see this show.
It is playing at The Theatre Row Complex on my West 42nd Street block, has a running time of 1:15, without intermission, and runs through December 21st.
Moving on to tonight’s entertainment event ...
The Off Broadway show ...
8:00==>PUNK ROCK - “In a private school outside of Manchester, England a group of highly-articulate seventeen year-olds flirt and posture their way through the day while preparing for their A-Level mock exams. With hormones raging and minimal adult supervision, nothing can mask the underlying tension that becomes increasingly pronounced as the clock ticks towards the ultimate dismissal.” (Off Broadway - discounted TDF ticket)
The playwright is Simon Stephens who also wrote “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night” that is currently having a highly successful run on Broadway.
I saw this well reviewed show back on November 8th and gave it an A. I really wanted to see it again so when it finally showed up on TDF I immediately booked it.
This show is playing at The Lucille Lortel Theatre on Christopher Street in The West Village, has a running time of 1:50, without intermission, and has been extended through December 14th.
Moving on some more ...
To my loyal and faithful readers and followers==>This is advance warning about tomorrow ... it is couch potato time again.
Yes, Billi Pod will spend the entire day/evening in the warm and cozy confines of PHC, in front of his 42” flat screen TV watching college football, specifically, The Conference Championship games.
Oh, the hiring of Jim McElwain as the new Gator football coach has received basically favorable press coverage.
One observation, however==>his new contract and the amount we had to pay to Colorado State to get him out of his contract with them typifies just how much of a “cash-cow” the Gator football program is and that college football truly has become a business rather than a sport. Oh well ... at least we had the money to do what we wanted/needed to do.
Anyway ...
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE!!
Total mileage for 2014==>1,361.45 miles (average 4.03 miles per day)
GO GATORS!!
