Monday==>Well, my loyal and faithful readers and followers, it is as cold and nasty today here in The Big Apple as Peyton Manning and the Broncos offense was last night at The Super Bowl in that foreign country known as New Jersey.
Yes, @ 1:00pm it is 33º, wind chill 24º, and heavily snowing. There is already major accumulation and 5 to 8 inches are forecast. Burrrrr!!
What can I say about last night’s fiasco (if you are a Broncos fan) over in New Jersey? Not much except that once again the old sports adage - "a good defense wins over a good offense" - proves to be true.
I really feel bad for Bronco fans, including my niece Donna Parker, who lives in Denver, because there is just no way to put any positive spin on the major ass-whipping they took.
I have to add, however, that my son Bill III aka The Bill is ecstatic because he has been a longtime Seahawks fan.
Oh, after the game was over there was a huge bang outside my building. It sounded as if a bomb had gone off. WTF?? Almost immediately police and fire engines appeared. WTF??
Turns out it was a manhole explosion and no one was hurt. It was still scary as Hell.
Just another part of an already weird evening.
Anyway ... let’s move on to Billi Pod’s report card on yesterday afternoon’s entertainment event, the Broadway show ...
THE GLASS MENAGERIE - “This revival of Tennessee Williams’ poetic masterpiece is anchored by the aging southern belle Amanda Wingfield, who hopes for her son Tom to fulfill her dreams of finding the perfect “gentleman caller” for her shy and damaged daughter Laura. However, the arrival of the gentleman caller sends shock waves through the family and causes cracks to form in the delicate fantasies that have kept them going.”
Billi Pod’s report card==>A
What an incredible 4-person cast: Cherry Jones as Amanda; Zachary Quinto as Tom; Celia Keenan-Bolder as Laura; and, Brian Smith as The Gentleman Caller.
The acting is amazing especially Cherry and Zachary. Celia and Brian also hold their own and their scene together in Act II is breathtaking.
Now, in the name of fair and unbiased reporting I have to admit that the story line is majorly depressing (after all, it is written by Tennessee Williams), but the acting, sets and staging overcomes all of the negativity.
As I wrote yesterday, it has received basically highly favorable reviews, almost all of which focus on the acting.
I am sooooooo glad I finally got to see it.
It is playing at the Booth Theatre on West 45th Street, has a running time of 2:30, with intermission, and runs through February 23rd.
Billi Pod says==>if you are a true theatre-lover and live in the Tri-State area, then, you gotta see this show before it closes.
When the show was over I came back to the warm and cozy confines of PHC to watch The Super Bowl. Along they way I picked up some pizza and wings. I just wasn’t in the mood to go through all of the necessary stuff to grill a steak etc. at half-time.
And, it was a good decision on my part.
Moving on to today’s entertainment event, a classical music concert at Carnegie Hall ...
8:00==>THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA @ Carnegie Hall - The program is:
Smetana - “The Moldau;”
Bartok - Piano Concerto No. 3 (performed by Radu Lupu): and
Dvorak - Symphony No. 6
(complimentary ticket)
Really in the mood for some classical music.
Thankfully, I can get to Carnegie Hall with only minimal exposure to the elements.
Moving on ...
On Wednesday afternoon my longtime friend Polly Mounts and her son Matthew, of West Palm Beach, FL, will arrive in the Big Apple for a whirlwind visit.
The main purpose of their trip is to see our mutual friend Dick Brukenfield’s play BLIND ANGELS, which is having its World Premiere downtown at the Theatre for the New City in The East Village. We will see it on its opening night on Thursday.
Polly, Matthew and I have already planned a lot of things and stuff and I will share the details with you loyal and faithful readers and followers as they develop.
Today the entertainment world is in mourning over the death Sunday morning of Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, from an apparent drug overdose.
The accomplished actor and director won the Academy Award for best actor for his role as famed author Truman Capote in the 2005 film "Capote."
He was also well-known in New York's theater scene, starring in plays like 2012's "Death of a Salesman" and directing others, like 1999's "In Arabia, We'd All Be Kings." He was nominated for a Tony Award three times.
According to the news reports he is survived by two daughters and a son.
In closing==>A HAPPY BIRTHDAY shout out to my daughter Kathi Bendeck, who lives in Columbia, SC, with her husband of many years, Dr. John Bendeck. Have a great day. Love and hugs. Dad!
