Billi Pod Has A Serious Question

You know, I don’t want to start this posting off on a negative note, but in the name of fair and unbiased reporting, this yellow dog Democrat has to state that he is very very troubled over our role in the crisis in Libya.

I mean, we are bombing sites in Libya, resulting in destruction and death. Isn’t that War? If so, when did Congress authorize it, as required by the Constitution?

And, not to sound snide but==>who the f**k appointed Obama “Hall Monitor of the World?” If we can use military force to dethrone a despot in Libya what about that nut-case in North Korea? Jus’ askin’.

Anyway ... thankfully the weather is much better this morning in The Big Apple, but, unfortunately, it will only be for one day because tomorrow is forecast to be cold and nasty with the possibility of snow.

Last night’s 5th ANNUAL BROADWAY BEAUTY PAGEANT @ Symphony Space was a lot of fun and I am glad I went. Mr. Broadway was won by Michael Cusumano (Mr. Chicago) who received a standing ovation for his brilliant interpretation of the prima ballerina version of the film “Black Swan,” dancing on pointe.

Tonight’s entertainment event is --

8:00==>BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO - “A darkly surreal look at war and its consequences. A tiger haunts the streets of present day Baghdad seeking the meaning of life. Robin Williams makes his Broadway debut in this show which has generated very mixed buzz during previews.

Blah Errands Monday In The Big Apple.

It is a rainy, nasty, cold errands day in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. And, at 9:30am we actually had some snow flurries. Enough already with this cold weather.

I am delaying heading out to work on my errands list in order to bring you loyal and faithful readers out there in the backwoods and vast hinterlands up-to-date on yesterday’s awesome double header. Yes, and I have to add in the name of fair and unbiased reporting, that many of you take every opportunity you can to remind me of how warm and nice it is “out there.” Yes, I get it ... North==>cold. South==>warm.

Oh well ... this is Billi Pod’s report card on yesterday’s great doubleheader --

MASTERWORKS FESTIVAL CHORUS @ Carnegie Hall==>A<==another terrific concert with talented younger performers.

My seat was awesome, in one of the boxes in the first tier, with a face value of $89.00, for which I paid $9.00. The box seats 8 people. Seated in front of me was Dad, Granddad and Grandma, whose son/grandson, 15yo Alex, was playing french horn with The Long Island Youth Orchestra. We struck up a conversation. Dad is a lawyer.

Needless-to-say they were very excited, but in the excitement they had forgotten to bring their camera, but no problemo ... Billi Pod and his trusty and beloved iPhone came to their rescue. I took several pictures, including this one outside of Carnegie Hall after the concert. And, I even remembered to email them the pics when I got back to PHC from my evening show.

After the concert I had about 3 hours to kill before my 7:00pm show. I had already made up my mind not to come back to PHC. I walked over to The Museum of Modern Art (which closes at 5:30pm on Sunday, dammit) and spent an hour there and then found a coffee shop and had coffee and something sweet. Actually, the time went by pretty fast.

Then it was time for --

THE DREAM OF THE BURNING BOY==>B+<==a kinda grim story line. Excellent acting. A worth-see.

At the theater I met up with my theater buddy Dian Crystal, and her friend, and we had a nice visit before the show.

When I got back to PHC, around 9:00pm, I had such a good feeling about another great day in The Big Apple.

Saturday’s Doubleheader Was A Mixed Bag.

Good morning my loyal and faithful readers. It is a bright but cold day in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World==>38º @ 8:30am.

How ‘bout them Gators!! Last night we beat UCLA 73-65 and advanced to The Sweet Sixteen. The Gators (28-7) will play BYU (31-4) on Thursday in New Orleans. GO GATORS!!

In the name of fair and unbiased reporting I have to admit that I find basketball, pro or college, a difficult game to watch from beginning to end, regardless of the stakes involved. I really only like the last 5 minutes. There - I’ve said it and I feel better. Please don’t judge me.

Yesterday’s entertainment doubleheader was a mixed bag, so let’s get right to it with Billi Pod’s report cards on --

THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT==>F<==terrible!! What a major disappointment. Chris Rock sucked. The characters were individually unlikeable and after the first 10 minutes the shouting, cussing, screaming etc got extremely tiresome. I found myself hoping that Act II would end in a mass suicide involving each of the 4 main characters.

But, I didn’t stay around to see if my wish would come true because I fled the scene at intermission. Yep ... I was outta there along with a number of other disappointed theatergoers.

Also, as a 21 year member of AA I found the underlying theme of a sponsor betraying his sponsee to be extremely disturbing. I will admit that perhaps on this issue I might have been a bit too sensitive, but, none-the-less, it is how I felt at the time.

I came back to PHC and watched the rest of the Gators/UCLA game.

Happily, the evening’s entertainment event was much much better --

THREE MEN ON A HORSE==>B+<==funny and very well acted. Yes, it is dated but it remains very laugh-inducing and the audience was really into it. I left the theater with a happy smile on my face.

Today is another entertainment doubleheader --

2:00==>MASTERWORKS FESTIVAL CHORUS @ Carnegie Hall - “Performing the world premiere of Festival Te Deum, with the New York City Chamber Orchestra.” ($9.00 TDF ticket)

My $9.00 ticket will be in the second level of the upper tier, which is excellent.

After the concert I will not come back to PHC. Instead, I will spend a couple of hours at The Museum of Modern Art until it is time for my second show, which is ...

7:00==>THE DREAM OF THE BURNING BOY - “Since the sudden death of one of his favorite students, high school teacher Larry Morrow has been falling asleep at his desk and dreaming and as his dreams intensify, a shocking secret is exposed.” (Off-Broadway - complimentary ticket).

Yes, I know that it sounds pretty grim but this show has been highly recommended to me by several of my theater going friends, so ...

Friday Was An Awesome Day For Billi Pod.

OMG my loyal and faithful readers! What a super-awesome Friday it was for Billi Pod==>Terrific weather, his 21st AA birthday, a great AA meeting, two blog postings, and then a mind-blowing entertainment event.

Yes, THE BOOK OF MORMON earns an A++. It is funny and smart and vulgar and offensive and beautifully put together. All the things I like.

This is no joke==>I was seated among a group of about ten 50s males and females, who identified themselves as “ex-Mormons.” They found the show to be roaringly funny.

Folks, this is gonna be a mega-hit so if you are in the NYC area you better get your tickets now because once it officially opens it will be a hot-ticket show, without a doubt.

I have to say that this theater season is about 200% better than last year and I have been so lucky to have seen, so far, what I believe will be 3 of the season’s blockbusters==>HOW TO SUCCEED; PRISCILLA; and, MORMON. And, I still have CATCH ME IF YOU CAN on my schedule for March 29th.

Today is yet another Billi Pod doubleheader --

2:00==>THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT - “This razor-tongued verbal cage-match about unadulterated love and uncontrolled adultery stars Chris Rock, making his Broadway debut.” (Broadway - discounted TDF ticket).

This show has a limited 15-week run and so far the advance buzz has been mixed.

I have a gut feeling that it will be in the "love it or hate" it category.

Then tonight is --

8:00==>THREE MEN ON A HORSE - “When hen-pecked greeting-card writer Erwin’s extraordinary talent for predicting the winners of horse races is discovered by a pack of gamblers, he suddenly finds himself in deep horses**t.” (Off-Broadway - discounted TDF ticket).

This is playing at a theater on my block and is in early previews.

Again, my loyal and faithful readers, I want to say THANK YOU to everyone out there who took the time to email, post, text me regarding my AA birthday. You have no idea how much it meant to me.

I do want to briefly respond to an inquiry about why I don’t write about my AA activities. It is very simple folks and basic ... AA stands for Alcoholics ANONYMOUS ... and what happens at meetings and stuff stays within the 4 walls of the meeting room. I will report to you that I usually attend 2 12:30pm meetings a week at the Citicorp Building on the Eastside, alternating Monday and Wednesday with Tuesday and Thursday. ‘Nuff said.

Friday in The Big Apple.

Good afternoon all of you loyal and faithful readers. It is a beautiful afternoon in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World.

Thanks so much for the emails, texts and postings in response to my earlier AA birthday posting. They all meant so very much to me. Thank you!!

I just got back from my AA meeting over on the Eastside. On my AA birthday I always try to attend what is known as a Beginner’s Meeting, which is geared toward people who are just starting down their own road to recovery. I think it is important for me to be reminded of how difficult those early days of sobriety can be, to insure that I do not become complacent in my own program of recovery. This meeting did just that.

Now on to other things and stuff, like my report card on last night’s MARIE AND BRUCE==>C<==Had no clue about what was happening on stage. I just didn’t get it, nor did the people seated around me. A major disappointment for Billi Pod. It was 1:45 without intermission.

But, in the name of fair and unbiased reporting I have to reveal that Billi Pod was a whore again. What do I mean you are no doubt breathlessly asking? Well, the playwright, Wallace Shawn, was seated 3 rows in front of me. When the show was over he was right next to me as we were leaving the theater. We made eye-contact and I said ... “nice work, I really enjoyed it” ... and he nodded and broadly smiled. Yes, Billi Pod was a whore and he admits it.

Tonight is a major entertainment event -

8:00==>THE BOOK OF MORMON - “Two mismatched young Mormon missionaries are sent off to spread the word in a dangerous part of Uganda." (Broadway - discounted ticket).

This is from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park. It is in previews and the advanced buzz has been very very favorable. Really looking forward to it.

Only 13 more days until the Yankees Opening Day game against The Tigers and Billi Pod can hardly wait.

March 18, 2011 - 21 YEARS OF SOBRIETY!!

Hi. My name is Bill and I am an alcoholic.

Today is a very important day for me because it is the anniversary of my 21st year of sobriety. Yes, it is a mind-boggling 21 years without a drop of alcohol entering my body. As I reflect on the events of the past 21 years it is apparent to me that much has changed in me, hopefully, almost all of it for the better.

I believe the most important change has been my ability to live my life by one of the fundamental teachings of Alcoholics Anonymous, that is, "One Day At A Time."

This concept was totally foreign to me prior to March 18, 1990. Now, on reflection, it was the major thing that saved me during that first tumultuous and frightening year when it seemed that my world was crashing down around me. People who I thought were my friends were calling for my resignation, my young grandsons were being approached by aggressive reporters and my home in Bartow was being picketed by the Ku Klux Klan.

I think I survived, especially during that first terrible year, because I came to believe that my Higher Power, whom I choose to call God, would not deal me more than I could handle on any one day.

I also began to make my way through the AA program by attending meetings and by working the suggested 12 Steps Of Recovery, which are:

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all of our affairs.

As I have written before, at my retirement party in Bartow, FL, in January 1995, I made reference to the role of Alcoholics Anonymous in my recovery by reading the following from the book called "Twenty-Four Hours A Day" --

YESTERDAY, TOMORROW, AND TODAY

“There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept from fear and apprehension. One of these days is yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed. We cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone beyond recall.

The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow, with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise, and perhaps its poor performance. Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is as yet unborn.

This leaves only one day - today. Any one can fight the battles of just one day. It is only when you and I add the burden of those two awful eternity's, yesterday and tomorrow, that we break down. It is not the experience of today that drives us mad. It is the remorse or bitterness for something which happened yesterday or the dread of what tomorrow may bring. Yes, this is how I have attempted to live my life for the past 7,635 days.

I deeply regret that 5 dear friends: David Patterson; Ray Coker; Marvin Mounts; Tom Macdonald; and, Randy Bentley, who were each with me at the beginning of my first steps toward recovery, are no longer able to share with me the wonderment of these 7,635 days lived One Day At A Time. I miss you guys, I really do.

I also must add that none of this time in recovery would have been possible without the dedicated staff at Hanley/Hazelden Center in West Palm Beach and the continued support of my family, Ginger Flowers of Atlanta, GA, and so many of you loyal and faithful readers. Thank you so very much.

To my NYC AA buddies, and you know who you are, thank you for allowing me to stand beside you during these difficult and trying times. Together we will continue to survive, in sobriety. Seeya at the 12:30pm Beginners Meeting.

In closing - not to preach - but aren’t The 12 Steps and One Day At A Time, in and of themselves, pretty good guidelines for living a meaningful and manageable life?

No, Billi Pod will not journey out to watch the parade, which starts at 11:00am on 5th Avenue at 44th Street and moves North up 5th Avenue past St. Patrick’s Cathedral to 86th Street, ending around 4:30pm. Yep ... been there, done that.

Billi Pod’s report cards on yesterday’s entertainment doubleheader --

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT last night gets an A+. Yes, it is campy and trashy but it is soooooooooo much fun and very well performed. It has high spirited energy, a sense of fun, dazzling costumes, wigs, and lighting, plus a story that, at its core, has likable characters, warmth, and a big heart. See it! It is bound to be a mega-hit.

At the very opposite end of the spectrum was THEODORE & CO, a major disappointment. A huge bore. Billi Pod left at intermission.

Tonight’s entertainment event is --

8:00==>MARIE AND BRUCE - “This comedy recounts the day that Marie finally resolves to tell her charming and impossibly positive husband Bruce that she's had enough.” (Off Broadway - discounted TDF ticket).

The role of Marie is played by Marisa Tomei, one of my favorite actors.

It is playing at a theater on my block so I will miss, hopefully, the St. Patrick’s Day faux-Irish bar crowds stumbling around, often puking on the sidewalks.

Another Awesome Doubleheader For Billi Pod

On what is to be an awesome doubleheader Wednesday in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, it is rainy, nasty, cold and only 39º @ 8:30am. Barf!!

Unfortunately, an otherwise stellar NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC concert last night was tainted by a 22 minute long (it seemed like an eternity) atonal piece of dreck by someone named Legeti. When it was over there was tepid, at best, applause. I think everyone seated in my area, all subscribers, hated it. Oh well ... sometimes you lose, right? The other two numbers were excellent.

Today is going to be an awesome doubleheader for Billi Pod, despite the looming nasty weather --

2:00==>THEODORE & CO - “The American premiere of the 1916 British musical about Lord Theodore, who is broke, but for a fee he offers “personal services” to his social set. We see the high and low of London society.” (Off-Broadway - complimentary ticket).

And then ...

8:00==>PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT - “Tick, Bernadette & Adam take their show to the Australian outback aboard a bus nicknamed Priscilla. In their search for love and friendship they end up finding more than they ever could have dreamed.” (Broadway - discounted ticket)

The advanced buzz on this show has been terrific and everyone I have talked with who has seen it absolutely L O V E D it. Needless-to-say Billi Pod is looking forward to the adventure.

BREAKING NEWS==>yesterday Billi Pod was able to score an awesome orchestra seat (discounted) for a preview performance of the highly anticipated Broadway musical CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, based on the movie by the same name. I will see it on Tuesday, March 29th and will be joined by Scott Reed, whose friend John McDaniel is the show’s Musical Director. Can’t wait.

Tuesday In The Big Apple

I am happy to report that last night’s concert==>DISTINGUISHED CONCERTS - SOUTHERN WINDS @ Avery Fisher Hall, was excellent. It featured very talented younger musicians from Texas and Virginia.

My seat was the best I have ever had for any performance at Avery Fisher Hall - row H, center orchestra. Wow!! Makes my series subscription seat, LL1, seem like Siberia.

Seated to my right was a Mom whose daughter was playing with the first group and to my left was a couple whose granddaughter, who is an oboist, was playing with the second group. The oboist had a brief solo and as she was playing I looked over and grandmother had tears streaming down her face. It was a very poignant moment.

As I have mentioned before, being around people who have connections with the performers adds a lot to my enjoyment of an event.

Even though these were young, nonprofessional musicians, their performance level was outstanding, making it a very enjoyable evening, especially with a comp. ticket.

Tonight will be my 3rd consecutive classical music concert --

7:30==>NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA @ Avery Fisher Hall - Hungarian Echoes, featuring: Haydn - Symphony No. 6; Ligeti (who?) - Piano Concerto; and, Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra. (subscription series)

You know, I can’t remember if I have ever had 3 consecutive classical music concerts on 3 consecutive days/nights. Actually, it is a nice change from what seemed like endless “dark-comedies” about dysfunctional families yelling, screaming and cussing at each other.

Actually, beginning tomorrow I will be pretty much back on my theater-going schedule and, you know an amazing thing? What, you are no doubt breathlessly asking? Well, my loyal and faithful readers, for the upcoming 14 days/nights, counting tonight - I already have something booked for 13 of them. WOW!! Only in New York, kiddies, only in New York!!

And, the countdown to the new baseball season is on. The Opening Game against Detroit will be on Thursday, March 31st and Billi Pod will be there, of course.

It’s Monday In The Big Apple

Good afternoon everyone out there in the backwoods and hinterlands.

On this errands day in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World, it is cloudy and still cold. It was a mere 38º when I woke up at 8:30am this morning.

I am so happy to report to you loyal and faithful readers that yesterday’s entertainment doubleheader was excellent, so here are Billi Pod’s report cards on the individual events --

HOW TO FOLD A MAP?==>A<==very funny. Great cast. I didn’t know until I got to the venue that this was the last performance. The house was sold-out and the audience was very much into the show. I am glad that I was able to see it and I left with a smile on my face.

MASTERWORKS FESTIVAL CHORUS @ Carnegie Hall==>A<==featured choral groups from all over, including Florida.

My comp. seat was excellent, in the orchestra, 7 rows from the stage, house left, four seats from the aisle, with a face value of ... gasp ... $79.00.

Seated to my right was a very nice lady, from Sebastian, FL, which is on the east coast of the state. Her daughter, who is a high school senior, was in the chorus. Needless-to-say, Mom was very excited and that added to my enjoyment of the evening, which was a great way to end what was an excellent weekend.

Yes, Billi Pod Is Back From “Out There”

Good morning my loyal and faithful readers out there in the vast hinterlands.

I am happy to report that Billi Pod made his trip to “out there” i.e. the outer-outer borough of Brooklyn, to visit Ben Sears and Justin Pifer in their new pad, without any problems.

Actually, in all seriousness, the trip out was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I arrived at their building in Bushwick exactly one hour from the time I walked out of my apartment on West 42nd Street, and, remember, this was on a Saturday when the subways are running on a much slower schedule.

Their bright and nicely furnished apartment is in a modernistic, newly refurbished building, which has all of the usual amenities - roof deck, security, laundry room, swimming pool, gym, etc.

We had a lot of “catching up” to do since it had been awhile since we had face time. I am pleased to report that both of these guys are very happy with what is going on in their lives, work-wise and personal, at the present time. Hooray!!

We went on a tour of the Bushwick area in Ben’s car and then into the more trendy Williamsburg area where we had an awesome late lunch/early dinner at Juliette, a very trendy restaurant.

I was back in PHC around 6:00pm, in plenty of time to get ready for my evening show.

So ... Ben and Justin ... it was great being with you guys. Love your new apartment!! Thanks for letting me continue to be a part of your lives.

Now, Billi Pod’s report card on ...

PLAY NICE==>F<==an incomprehensible piece of theatrical dreck. Hated it. The 95 minute running time was akin to being in purgatory. You are hereby officially warned. Stay away, far far away!!

Today is another entertainment doubleheader for Billi Pod --

2:00==>HOW TO FOLD A MAP? “An eclectic smorgasbord of depraved fun from the earth to the moon, with 55 characters and 20 stories.” (Off-Broadway - $9.00 TDF ticket).

I am rather confident this will fall into the “loved it or hated it” category, with no middle ground.

Then tonight is --

8:30==>MASTERWORKS FESTIVAL CHORUS @ Carnegie Hall - With the New York City Chamber Orchestra - performing Leavitt’s (who?) Requiem, plus additional works, including Haydn’s Mass. (complimentary ticket).

I think this will be a nice way to end the weekend.
