A Saturday Doubleheader For Billi Pod

Last night’s NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC concert was excellent, especially Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7, which clocks in at 64 minutes.

As I reported yesterday, my ticket for this concert was complimentary, meaning I had no clue where the seat would be. I felt it probably would be in the very upper nosebleed section of Avery Fisher Hall.

Well, it was in the 2nd tier, 3rd row, center. Not bad, not bad at all. These seats regularly sell for $40.00.

In the name of fair and unbiased reporting I have to state that there were lots of empty seats in the orchestra area, which I think continues to reflect the long-term effects of our fragile economy.

When I got back to PHC I settled in to watch the final half of the Oklahoma State/Iowa State game. OSU was ranked #2 in the BCS poll. Iowa State was unranked.

Well, you know the outcome, Iowa State overcame a 17-point deficit and won in double-overtime, sending the college football universe into yet another tailspin. What a crazy season this has been and it ain’t over yet.

Billi Pod has a doubleheader today ... first ...

2:00==>THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY OF STEVE JOBS - “This one-man show by Mike Daisey illuminates how the CEO of Apple and his obsessions shaped our lives. Daisey also shares stories of his travels to China to investigate the factories where millions toil to make iPhones and iPods.” (Off Broadway - discounted TDF ticket)

This show has received excellent reviews. I have really liked Daisey’s previous shows so I am looking forward to this one.

It is playing downtown at the Public Theatre. When the show is over I will leisurely walk up to Union Square, find someplace for coffee and something sweet, and then go to the movie theater located at Broadway and 13th Street for the second part of my doubleheader ... which is ... tada ...

6:20==>MONEYBALL - “Brad Pitt shines as Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane who is trying to change baseball’s economic rules of success.”

Yes, Billi Pod is finally fulfilling his promise to Self and that will make him (Billi Pod and Self) feel good about the state of his/their entertainment World.

I am sure that you loyal and faithful readers picked up on the omission of the GATOR/FURMAN game at 2:00pm. The reason==>it ain’t being carried up here on any of hundreds of channels. Oh well ...

In response to several emails and texts - yes, I have plans for Thanksgiving.

As I have done for the past three years, I will have dinner with several of my AA buddies, and their families, at a rather posh Upper Westside apartment. Thanks for asking.

GO GATORS!!

RIP Steve Jobs

Yes==>RIP Steve Jobs.

Thank you for bringing me into the computer world in 1992 with the Macintosh Performa and then subsequent works of technological genius. I am confident that without the ease of operation of the Macintosh interface I would never have made it into the computer world and ultimately cyberspace.

Thank God my dear friends Randy Bentley and Jim Vandewalker were early Apple devotees who steered me away from the spawn-of-the-devil Windows operating system and into the much easier to understand and operate Apple platform, which was and still is basically, a plug-in and play system.

Yes, I became hooked on the Apple system and have had many laptops and desktops. I remain a Mac-person to this day.

I also must thank Steve for the iPod, iShuffle, ‘Nano, iTunes, Apps, Apps Store and, of course, the iPhone.

I had a first generation iPod, which became almost an obsession ... thusly ... my current name==>Billi Pod.

Now, my loyal and faithful readers, I know I probably shouldn’t be posting the following excerpt from an ABC News item, but I am doing so to show more evidence of just how low the religious-right has sunk ...

*********************

"The Westboro Baptist Church took to an iPhone when they heard about Steve Jobs’ death Wednesday night, sending out a message saying the Apple founder would be going to hell and calling for a protest of his funeral.

“Westboro will picket his funeral. He had a huge platform; gave God no glory and taught sin,” wrote Margie Phelps, daughter of the church’s founder.

The controversial group often pickets outside of soldiers’ funerals to draw media attention to their cause, which includes anti-gay material. Phelps tweeted the messages from her account, with an automatic note appearing at the bottom of the Tweet saying “via Twitter for iPhone.”

“No peace for man who served self, not God,” she wrote with the hashtag, #hellgreetedhim. “Westboro must picket.”

Thursday morning, Phelps responded to widespread criticism of her using the iPhone to Tweet the messages, saying that the phone was created by God–not Jobs–for that purpose.

“Rebels mad cuz I used iPhone to tell you Steve Jobs is in hell. God created iPhone for that purpose!” she wrote."

*************************

All Billi Pod can say about this is==>Unfuckingbelievable!!

You know the political scene is getting stranger and stranger by the minute for the Republican Party. I don’t want to dwell on it but ... first Governor Chris Christie says “no thank you” and then ex-Governor Sarah Palin says “aw shucks - no thank you.” Governor Rick Perry’s popularity with potential Republican voters has tanked according to recent polls.

And, various states are moving their caucus/voting dates around in an apparent game of one-upmanship. Yep, it is gonna be an interesting year.

Moving on ...

Last night’s NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC concert was excellent, ending with a sublime performance of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3. It was just what Billi Pod needed/wanted.

When the concert was over he walked back to PHC. It was kinda brisk and windy.

Speaking of brisk and windy ... when I woke up this morning at 8:00am it was 48ยบ and when I left the apartment to go over to the Eastside for my periodic finger-prick appointment with my Cardiologist it was very windy out.

The brief session went fine and everything is “normal” (if that word can ever be used with anything related to Billi Pod). I also got my annual flu shot, something I urge all of my loyal and faithful readers over the age of 50 to do.

Well, as you know==>tonight is a big night at Yankee Stadium, The House That Greed and Ego Built, when The Yankees and The Tigers meet in Game 5 of the ALDS. It is loser go home.

We are relying on rookie sensation Ivan Nova and The Tigers are relying on Doug Fister, the pitcher we beat in the suspended Game 1. Nova got the win in that game.

The first pitch is scheduled for 8:07pm on TBS. Weather will not be a factor. Billi Pod will be there in his usual seat.

The winner of the game advances to Game 1 of the League Championship Series on Saturday against The Texas Rangers. The loser ... tada ... goes home.

Well, it is almost 4:00pm and I am really antsy about the game, so will post this and then spend some time just walking around the apartment sucking my thumb.

GO YANKEES AND GO GATORS!!

Billi Pod Is In Apple Heaven!!!

BREAKING NEWS from The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World==>my new 21.5" iMac and wireless HP printer arrived last night. I brought them upstairs to PHC when I got back from my show. OMG!!

I promised myself ... “self, it is 11:00pm, just leave them in their respective boxes and deal with them tomorrow” ... and did I keep my promise to “self”? Well, those of you loyal and faithful readers who have known me over the years already know the answer ... OF COURSE F**KING NOT!!

OMG!! Billi Pod stayed up until almost 4:00am playing with the awesome 21.5” iMac. After working with my trustworthy iBook, with its 11.5” screen, for 18 months this new iMac feels like I am watching everything at an iMax theater.

When I got up this morning I went directly to the new machine and have been here ever since and it is almost noon. Haven’t even had breakfast yet. I am just working with the basics, getting myself familiar with the new operating system etc.

My plans are to get the wireless HP printer operational this afternoon and to delay major data transfers until tomorrow.

Yep, I gotta say it==>Billi Pod is in Apple Heaven. Bless you Steve Jobs, Bless You!!

Now, my loyal and faithful readers, on to other stuff like ...

Report card on GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES==>W+<==as in majorly weird and creepy, but, it is still worth seeing because the two-person cast is excellent.

My entertainment event for tonight is --

8:00==>BEIRUT-"a young man has been quarantined to a dark, squalid room (referred to as "Beirut") on the LES of NYC, after testing positive for a nameless disease. His uninfected girlfriend makes the dangerous journey across the quarantine line to be with him.” ($9.00 TDF ticket).

Man, does this sound grim, but it is playing at a theater on my block, so I thought I would give it a shot.

OK, everyone, Billi Pod needs/wants to get back to becoming one with his new iMac, so he will close with ...

Sunday In The Big Apple==>WTF?

Good morning my loyal and faithful readers on Sunday, the second day of 2011.

Today is a rather strange beginning to 2011 for Billi Pod. Why? Well==>(1) the alarm in my iPhone is not working. I understand it is supposed to correct itself tomorrow, and

(2) missed deliveries for both The Times and The Post today. Now that is really annoying for a news junky like moi.

When I called to report the problem(s) was advised that The Times would be delivered later this morning. (addendum-->it just arrived)

At least The Gators won the last game in the Urban era, wrestling a victory from the jaws of mediocrity in a game much much closer than the final score of 37-24.

It just seemed to me that The Gators were sloppy in almost every aspect of the game and where the f**k was the offense? Oh well ... a win is a win, right?

BREAKING NEWS==>Gators will soon announce the hiring of Charlie Weis as our new offensive coordinator. Great news!! The new era begins.

Yesterday, between watching way too much football, Billi Pod look care of the number 1 item on his 2011 To Do List. What was it you are no doubt breathlessly asking?

Well, folks, midweek I will receive delivery of a new 21.5” iMac with of all the new bells and whistles, including a new HP printer, but ...

OMFG!!==> I hate the thought of getting it set up and transferring data from this old but trusty iBook and my old iMac, but it has to be done.

Billi Pod’s activity schedule for today==>Football in the afternoon and a movie in the early evening.

Saturday - What a Crazy Crazy Day

Yes, I had one of those strange and crazy days and, actually, it isn’t over quite yet. Today was supposed to be a mega-good day built around the Old Timers Game at Yankee Stadium beginning at 1:45 and then the Yankees vs. Angels game at 3:55. I was pretty hyped about both. My anticipated schedule was to head out to the stadium no later than 12:45 so I would be there in time for the introductions.

To start off - for reasons I don’t understand, I didn’t go to bed last night until 4:00am. I just wasn’t sleepy. I actually had to make myself go to bed but when my head hit the pillow I immediately went to sleep. I woke up at exactly 10:00 and it was nasty and gray looking out and the forecast was for thunderstorms later in the afternoon. Damn.

I had breakfast, scanned the 3 newspapers and then went online on my iBook to check my email and for whatever reason AOL was acting strange, not that that’s so unusual. I actually had to get into my AOL account via the internet rather than directly from the program. Weird. After I read the emails it was time to shower and get ready to head out. It was still nasty and had begun to lightly rain.

After I showered I put on the usual Yankee garb and began pondering whether I should even go out to stadium for the Old Timers game because, if it was rained out, I would then have a long long wait at the stadium to see if the regular game would be played. The rain stopped and I determined I would indeed head out.

Just before I left the apartment I went to the iBook to check email one last time and ... gasp ... it was completely dead ... frozen up. What the hell? It was plugged into the power source so it couldn’t be the battery, so what happened? Man, this sucked because I use the iBook for internet access now (the reasons are too complicated to explain now) and I always take it with me when I travel and on Thursday I head down to Columbia, SC.

Oh man. I quickly found the start-up disk and inserted it and nothing happened and, of course, I couldn’t get the disk out. And, it was time to head out.

So I did. Just a few yards from the subway entrance it started to pour, so I raced into the station. At least I didn’t get soaked. Do I go back or do I head out to the Bronx? I took a deep breath and opted to head out to The Bronx.

When I got on the local train, which I always take up to 125th Street, I took out my iPhone so I could play some solitaire and, dammit, I had forgotten to refresh the program while I was outside, so it wouldn’t work. Damn. Oh well, nothing I could do about it. I passed the time by writing a bitch note to myself on the iPhone.

We made great time to 125th Street and the connecting 4 train wasn’t jam-packed as it usually is. When we got to the 161st/Yankee Stadium and got off we were horrified to discover that the MTA assholes had forgotten to open the two major exits from the platform so we had to go inside the station and down really crowded narrow stairs. People were really pissed. It was 1:30. What more could go wrong, thought I?

It was very lightly raining and when I got to my seat the infield was covered with a tarp but, and a big but, it stopped raining and began to clear up. OK. I would just settle in and listen to the pregame broadcast on my trusty Walkman. Got the ear pods out of one pocket and reached into the other to get the Walkman, and ... it wasn’t there. I had left it in the apartment. Fuck and double Fuck!!!

Nothing I could do about it. To make this long story a bit shorter, the weather cleared, the tarp was taken off and the ceremony started just 15 minutes late. There were 72 former Yankees in attendance and the introductions took almost an hour. It was very moving. They had only time to play one inning before it was time for the regular game to begin. Its starting time couldn’t be delayed, of course.

And the game started on time and I resigned to seeing it without the benefit of the John Sterling broadcast. Oh well ...

Seated behind me was a rather large guy in his 50s and his teenage son. He is a partial season ticket holder but he usually sits with The Bleacher Creatures in the right field bleachers. He had gotten his seats for this game though a friend. He was listening to the game. At the end of the first inning we struck up a conversation and I mentioned that I always listen to the game but that I had left my Walkman at home and I held my ear pods in my hand. Now what happened next is amazing ...

He said ... “wait a minute” ... then he reached into a paper bag and brought out another small AM radio. “You can use this,” he said. It turned out that his son had left his ear pods at home. I offered him/them mine and the guy said, “no ... you go ahead and listen to the game, my son and I will share my ear pod.” How about that? Later during the game I offered to buy him a beer or a soda but he very pleasantly declined.

The game itself was great. The Angels got off to an early 2 run lead due to some lousy Yankee fielding but Moose recovered and then pitched shutout ball through the 7th inning and the Yankees won 8-2.

Also seated behind me was a family of 4 from Nevada who had come to NYC for the sole purpose of seeing their first and last game in The House That Ruth Built. Their 10 year old son is a huge ARod fan and he had brought a sign with him about wanting ARod to hit a home run. The kid didn’t show it on A-Rod’s first at bat and he struck out. On his second at bat the kid raised the sign and we all had a good laugh and then .... bam ... ARod hit a bomb to right center field and we all went crazy and I took the picture. This will be a moment this kid will never ever forget. Awesome.

I got off the subway at the 59th Street station to walk over to the Apple Store at 59th and 5th to see about making an appointment with their “Genius Bar” to try to get the iBook up and running before I leave for SC. The Apple Store and the “Genius Bar” operates 24x7. The store was jam-packed. I talked with a very nice young female rep and was told that the first appointment time was on Monday, so I made an appointment for the first available time, 4:15am, yes, that is correct, 4:15am. As I was about to leave she whispered to me that it might work if I would come back between 1:30 and 2:00am tonight and I might, just might, be able to sneak in between appointments. I thanked her and walked back to the apartment.

Yes, I would definitely give it a shot.

When I got back to the apartment it was around 8:00 and I was delighted to see/hear that the 30s gal in the apartment directly underneath me is having an outdoor BBQ party and it was in full swing. She did have the grill properly placed in the middle of the yard so that wouldn’t be a problem but ... yeah ... they are loud and are having fun and there ain’t nothing I can or will do about it, so ... hopefully they will be done by 1:00am.

I went over to the iBook and just for the hell of it, plugged it in and hit the power button and ... it booted up and everything is running fine. I have no clue what the problem is or whether it will recur but for now everything is OK. Isn’t life strange?

So, I fixed a huge fruit and cheese plate, downloaded some pictures and began working on this much too long post, which I will now end with a simple ...

Go Yankees!!!

Saturday - What the F**k Was Steve Jobs Thinking??

First off I want everyone to know that I am a 110% Steve Jobs/Apple/Mac person. I have always had a Mac, both lap top and desk top, and I have multiple iPods (Billi Pod, get it?) and a first generation iPhone, courtesy of my super-son Bill. I have always thought that Steve Jobs was a genius, but ... Friday’s debacle surrounding the highly anticipated release of the newest iPhone was something right out of the pages of the Windows “I’ve Got My Head Up My Ass” play book. Yes, Bill Gates has gotta be laughing his billionaire head off, and rightfully so.

As described in the New York Times: “For many people on Friday, the iPhone was the iCan’t. Apple suffered extensive network gridlock Friday morning, as many of the six million users of the original iPhone tried to upgrade to new software while the first buyers of the new iPhone 3G were trying to activate their purchases.”

For new purchasers, Apple instituted a policy that the phone had to be activated in-store in order to prevent a recurrence of the mass overseas exodus of modified phones for unauthorized cellular networks.

Well, all that decision produced was mass chaos, disgruntled customers and a huge PR faux pas.

To add to the PR problems, early performance reviews are highly critical of the lack of battery strength. Yes, the new wireless internet system is 3 to 4 times faster than the woeful AT&T Edge, but it comes with a price - it eats up the battery life, now estimated to be about 4 1/2 hours. And the battery is sealed inside the iPhone, meaning it cannot be exchanged, only recharged.

And what about us, the original iPhone users? Well, technically we can upgrade (when the system will permit) but the upgrade will not include access to the new and faster wireless 3G. Nice Steve, real nice. Thanks so very much.

OK, I have ranted enough. It will be interesting to see how Apple reacts.

Have two shows today. At 2:00 is the Off-Broadway dark comedy “Stain” and then tonight is Bacchae with Alan Cummings.

Gotta go - Oh, Yankee bats - wake the fuck up, OK?

Go Yankees!!
