Friday==>A big TGIF shout-out to all of my Worker Bee friends out there in the hinterlands, wastelands and boondocks.
Just hang in there everyone (actually, you don’t have a choice but to hang in there) in just a few more hours you will be able to temporarily leave your cubicles, wait stations, broom closets etc, but, remember, your bosses are watching you so don’t even consider attempting to sneak out and leave early. It ain’t gonna work.
But, when you finally do leave==>HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!
Yes, your favorite blogger actually started a posting without giving the weather conditions here in The Big Apple, The Greatest City In The World. Wait ... before you head over to The Weather Channel ... here it is ... hazy and still cold ... 29º, wind chill 22º @ 9:00am. You are welcome!!
Moving on to Billi Pod’s report card on last night’s Off Broadway show ...
FAST COMPANY, the comedy about a family of Asian American con artists on the trail of a million-dollar comic book, and everything is going dangerously wrong==>B
There is superb acting from the 4-person cast, but the story line is very difficult to follow at times because of the use of slang and con-related jargon
If you decide to see the show make sure you read the program notes because they contain definitions for words/phrases such as: “fixer,” “roper,” and “pig in a poke.”
This New York premiere is playing at the Ensemble Studio Theatre on West 52nd Street, has a running time of 1:30, without intermission, and runs through April 6th.
I have to report that the walk from PHC to and from the show up on far West 52nd Street was very unpleasant due to the gusting wind. Man, am I tired of the cold weather and I know everyone else up here is too.
Anyway ... moving on ...
Tonight’s entertainment event is going to be something that is very different and will, without a doubt, fall into the “loved-it or hated-it” category ...
7:30==>BUM PHILLIPS ALL-AMERICAN OPERA - “This world premiere opera celebrates the improbable life of Bum Phillips, a National Football League legend and American icon. Inspired by Phillips’ motivational skills and homespun principles, this epic portrait of Bum Phillips pushes the boundaries of where and for whom opera is staged.” (Off Broadway - complimentary ticket)
Yep, that’s right ... an opera about a football player.
Phillips was a legendary football coach for the Houston Oilers and was known for his knack for offbeat phrases.
Hey ... don’t be too judgmental. You know your favorite blogger likes to see different things and stuff here in The Big Apple.
It is being performed at La MaMa on East 4th Street in The East Village and runs through March 30th.
In closing ... I want to remember that 2 years ago today I lost one of my dearest friends, Jack Davis of Bartow, FL. This is what I posted back on March 16, 2012 ---
************************
"On Wednesday night I lost my longtime friend Jack Davis of Bartow, FL.
After a long long battle Jack finally found peace when his life-partner, Jeff Clark, made the tough decision that Jack had suffered enough. It was the right thing to do.
**************************
“Jack Davis, 72, of Bartow passed away Wednesday, March 14, at Memorial Hospital of Tampa from complications of diabetes. Born July 14, 1939, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Jack was the son of the late John E. Davis, Sr. and Marian E. Davis of Bartow. He moved to Bartow with his parents from Clearwater, Florida in 1953, and graduated from Summerlin Institute in 1958. Jack retired from the Polk County Clerk of Courts office in 2003 after 40 years of service. After his retirement, Jack volunteered at the Bartow Chamber of Commerce as a Chamber Diplomat, and was named “Diplomat of the Year” in 2007. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bartow. Jack is survived by his partner, Jeff Clark of Bartow; caregiver, Ruth Harrison of Bartow; cousin, Betty McDonald of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and cousin, Jimmy Davis of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Jack will be remembered fondly by his many friends and acquaintances for his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and his acts of kindness, generosity and compassion. He loved helping people, and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Family will receive friends Sunday, March 18, 2012, from 4-6 PM at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 310 S. Broadway Ave, Bartow. Interment will follow at Bartow Wildwood Cemetery.”

Our friendship spanned decades. Jack was a career employee with the Polk County Clerk’s office and was well-known and respected by all of us in the local judicial system.
On a personal basis, Jack was instrumental in helping me make the ultimate transition from Bartow to New York City. He would look out after my Bartow house, until I finally sold it in 1998, and, for years and years, forwarded my mail to me on a weekly basis.
I am so glad that I was able to visit with him several times back in January when I was down there for the birth of my great-granddaughter Saylor Falletta. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to see Jack when I was at my 60th class reunion because he had been transferred to the hospital in Tampa.
As Jack’s health declined his life-partner, Jeff Clark, was always by his side, placing Jack’s needs and well-being above all other things. The love between these two was what made these extremely difficult times bearable. Bless you Jeff!!
Rest In Peace my dear friend. I know you are in a better place.
Bill"
